Chapter 473: Noble Blood
A stranger in the crowd handed one over. Kazi grabbed it, shaking it swiftly and tilted his mask up. Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. He got the boy’s hands and had it grip Kazi’s inhaler. Kazi used the inhaler with the kid’s fingers pressing and feeling the inhaler. Its patterns, its rhythm.
While still using the inhaler, Kazi had the kid grab his own inhaler. "Get off," Kazi told the father. Making deep eye contact with the kid, he breathed. He breathed. He used the inhaler. The kid got a proper grip of his own inhaler.
The mother put a hand to her mouth. "What are you doing!?"
Kazi took a deep, deep breath of the inhaler and didn’t look up. "Hssk...Just shut up and watch."
The boy, still gasping, was slowly mimicking Kazi’s actions. A slow breath in. A pause. Then another. The crowd murmured in shock as his breathing steadied. Steadied, steadied, steadied until it was perfectly normal.
The kid passed out. He was no longer screaming though. His breathing was steady.
"H-he trusted you," the father said, almost in disbelief.
Kazi scoffed, adjusting his mask as he rose. "Monkey’s afraid to eat the red berries until he sees another monkey eat them. Monkey see, monkey do. That’s all it was."
An ambulance’s sirens wailed in the distance and the crowd parted to let the medics through. Kazi was already gone by then though. The mask secured, he bumped into Pauline.
"Oh!" Pauline took a step back. "I saw the ambulance came so fast."
’I know, I called them the moment I heard him breathing.’ Kazi peered over his shoulder. ’He doesn’t have asthma, he has Bronchiolitis. Better to just leave it to the professionals than to gawk at the kid like an idiot.’
In a couple minutes, the disease would flare up and the kid would have to be on oxygen support. Kazi gave a nod to Pauline. "All’s well that ends well. The kid’s in good condition."
"That’s a relief." Pauline placed a hand on her chest, sighing. "Thank goodness..."
Kazi stared down at her.
"..."
In his mind, he didn’t know whether to grab her by the throat and kill her now or gut her womb and stop her from ever procreating.

"You’re all the same. You nobles whose blood is dirtier than the mud we come from."
The date was done. Kazi was dropped back home and Pauline was on her way. The home guard was downstairs and Kazi...
Kazi was in Pevvo’s office with Pevvo himself and his big man security guard. Both were tied up and leaning against the walls of the fireplace. Kazi had dropped to their level, mask off and eyes dreary. He reached forward and ripped the cloth out of Pavvo’s mouth.
"Y-you...! You dare! I will have you arrested—"
"Strike one. Two more strikes and..." Kazi pulled out a gun and loaded it. Pavvo’s mouth closed, jaw clenching. "You’re dead. Do you understand?"
"Y-you..."
"I can and I will. I am an assassin, I have no killing you. The only reason I haven’t? Convenience. It would take me ten seconds to kill the security guard downstairs and the two outside. It would be even easier to make up for an excuse for their disappearance. I do this for a living, my friend. There is nothing you can do that I will not and cannot adapt to. So...have I made myself clear."
He cocked the gun at Pavvo’s head. The noble had no choice but to nod. Pavvo was a handsome man with cropped black hair and an oval-shaped head with beading green eyes. A scar went down the left eye. An accident from childhood. He touched the scar. "Hilarious. You accidentally played with a knife, didn’t you?"
Pavvo’s growl confirmed it.
"I was four when I first wielded and mastered a knife. I was taught by a Pakistani man who in turn learned it from his father, a soldier. Those of us down below, we scrounge for every ounce of knowledge and skill. But you nobles don’t have to do a thing. You wake up, you smile, and you live your lives without a care in the world. You don’t even consider what your ancestors have done to people like us."
Kazi smiled and then shoved the nuzzle of the gun into Pavvo’s mouth.
"I hate you people. If I could, I would murder every single on you and establish a new state but...at the end of the day, I’m not French. It’s not up to me to decide what your people want. If they were THAT dissatisfied by what you did, I’m sure they would let the whole world know. I admire that about the French. They don’t screw around when it comes to keeping you idiots accountable."
He left the gun in his mouth and stood up. Kazi dusted himself off, still smiling. "In two weeks, as I’m sure you know, is the MaskdeMasque Ball Dance. Pauline’s mother is hosting it and the present is coming too. There’s going to be plenty of people for me to look at and meet."
Hands in his pockets, Kazi went to the security guard and bashed his head in. Instant knock-out. Pavvo closed his eyes, wincing.
"You wanted to take Pauline so that you could meet the Fair Lady. Two weeks of dating and an entry to France’s most luxurious ball. Oh, sure, you were pretty confident in getting in anyway. But there’s a difference in being confident and guaranteeing an invitation. You’re...what? The descendent of a Marquis? Pauline is related to the Duke of Montebello and the Prince of Siewierz, Jean Lannes. Bit of a gap, wouldn’t you say? Oh, but I suppose it doesn’t matter much legally speaking. The hierarchy was toppled over! Hooray!"
Kazi made a fist and a triumphant grin.
"Exceeept the money. You didn’t lose the money, did you? Of course not, money is great. Losing titles? Pfft, you can live without that but the money? You have to keep it! At all costs!"
Kazi laughed and went down on one knee. He grabbed the gun, a finger on the trigger, and gave a thumbs-up.
"Don’t worry, I’m just going to fatten your purses by firing that idiot patrolling your house. Well, actually, I’m going to say I’ll fire him, punch him in the gut when the shock hits, and then drag him here for interrogation."
Kazi jerked the gun out of his mouthole and Pavvo...Pavvo just gasped for air. He didn’t dare to say anything to this insane, grinning man. He had no idea what he was up to. He didn’t care. All he wanted to do was to live through it.
