Chapter 472: Emergency

Chapter 472: Emergency

To go from a measly slave in Bangladesh to riding in a limo alongside a noble lady. Kazi had driven in a limo once. He pretended to be the driver and veered it off-road in order to threaten a billionaire in New Guinea to stabilise the water and electricity market.

This time, he was not stealing or threatening or driving it off a cliff. Today, he was driving through the streets of Nice in France and the decorated guest. Across him was the beautiful noble herself, who carried her second glass of cool wine.

"You drink too much wine."

"Which is why I am thinking a substitute," Pauline stated, downing it like it was nothing. "It’s putting too much strain on my pancreas according to the doctors."

’You think meth is a better replacement?’

"Why not ask your doctor for it?"

"...you can do that?"

"Tsk, tsk, tsk. A sheltered little lady, aren’t you?"

Pauline laughed into her glass and drank the rest of it. She put the glass in a compartment under her seat, scooted over back to the fridge, and opened it up to grab another glass of wine. The wheels on this limo were butter smooth. No fear of spilling it on herself.

"Are you sure you don’t want any? I promise I will look away," Pauline said.

Kazi ignored her offer. "We have arrived."

The door was opened by Pavvo’s home guard. Kazi went out first and did not offer a hand to let Pauline hop out. He simply observed their current location: the Cours Saleya market. Kazi smelled the lovely flowers. This market place was not like many others. It changed depending on the season and day. Today, it was the Marché aux Fleurs, or Flower Market.

"I’m shocked: this actually seems...pleasant." Pauline almost seemed to laugh. "You go here often, Pavvo?"

"Indubitably."

It was where he was currently staying. He knew a guy that knew a guy that knew a guy here in the market. That guy graciously gave Kazi a job and a room to rent.

"Ah, by the way," Kazi leaned over to the home security guard, "would you mind watching us from a distance? Things might get a bit...frisky."

A nod of understanding. This, it seemed, was very in-character for Pavvo. Too easy. In three hours, Kazi wanted to get rid of Pauline. That didn’t mean acting like a shithead. No, that was no way to treat a woman, no matter if he wanted to or not.

Kazi caught up to Pauline who had skipped ahead.

"Wow. How come your place smells so bad if you go to places like this?"

"The same reason I don’t need my parents’ credit card."

"Huh. Touché."

As they walked past a stall filled with violets, a young boy, no older than ten, ran up to them with wide, curious eyes.

"Are you two cosplaying?" he asked, tilting his head.

Pauline’s veiled face twisted into a grin. "Oh, us? Yes, yes, we’re cosplaying. I am, er..." she paused, then glanced at Kazi for backup.

Kazi immediately jumped in. "She’s cosplaying as Aerith, and I am, of course, Sephiroth’s secret twin brother from a parallel dimension, Cloud Strider."

The kid’s face twisted in confusion. "That doesn’t sound right."

Kazi patted the boy’s head. "You should watch more anime. Expand your horizons. Dragon Quest I, start there."

The kid seemed to consider this deeply, then nodded solemnly before dashing off. Kazi and Pauline watched him disappear into the crowd, exchanging amused glances.

"Isn’t Sephiroth a game character?"

"Look at you, you play games. Congrats."

"I read manga too."

"Now you’re just a loser."

Five minutes later, just as they were admiring a stall overflowing with deep blue hydrangeas, a scream pierced through the lively chatter of the market. At first, it was a wail which slowly devolved into a scoff and then coughing. A sort-of wheezing noise that anybody and everybody could tell was not good.

Pauline caught his gaze. He tried to ignore her. Her brows furrowed and she stepped back. The wheezing grew continuously louder and louder.

Kazi groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. ’Astagfrillah, can’t somebody shut that kid up?’

Pauline, however, was already tugging at his sleeve. "Come on!"

’What? What do you mean come on, let’s mind our own business—’

Alas, he was dragged away. They pushed through the crowd to find the boy from before on the ground, writhing, his tiny chest heaving as he gasped for air. His parents hovered over him, panicking and being useless.

Pauline was petrified. Kazi wanted to face-palm. ’Why come here if all you’re gonna do is gawk.’

Kazi went past the barrier of spectators and asked, exasperated. "What is he screaming for?"

The mother looked up, frantic. "We don’t know! He was fine, and then he just—"

"He has asthma! I-I think it’s that but worse!" the father exclaimed. "Can you do something? Are you a doctor?"

The inhaler was already out and being used. The father was trying to help and failing.

The mother gulped. "B-but it’s never been this bad....it never sounded so..."

A crowd chattered. Pauline had no clue what to do. Nobody did. Kazi sighed internally. ’God dammit, if I save him, I’ll have to pull off my mask and reveal I’m not Pavvo.’

He turned to Pauline. "Hey, go get the nurses and doctors."

Petrified and confused. Kazi almost yelled.

"Go get them, I said. Come on, we don’t have time, we have a dying child here. Get our guards and get them to get the doctors."

"O-okay."

Stupid noble girl ran off, forgetting that she had a phone and could just call them.

The mother’s face paled. "I-is it that bad?"

Kazi shot her a flat look. "No shit, lady. Look at him. Does he look like he’s having fun?"

The father fumbled with an inhaler, desperately trying to get his son to use it, but his breaths were too erratic. He resisted it. Kids were stronger than you think. Kazi knelt down, his mind clicking through possibilities like a well-oiled machine.

"Anyone else have an inhaler?" he asked sharply.
