Chapter 398: Major Magic Disciplines
The Major Magic Disciplines.
The seven arts of magic, in other words, taught in the University of Magic.
Conjuration, Transmutation, Enchantment, Illusion, Healing, Summoning, and Abjuration. Today’s focus was on Conjuration and Transmutation.
Conjuration: creating something from mana alone. Many spells fell into this discipline whether they wanted to or not. Attacking spells like Fire Ball or Dart were the most basic examples of Conjuration. A mage or wizard "conjured" the attacks.
On an academic level, attacking spells and conjuration weren’t studied the same. It was like comparing biology and biomedicine; some principles were the same but ultimately there were different uses, thoughts, and theories.
Those that specialized in Conjuration were called Conjurors. Often, conjuring created something temporary, which would cease to exist once the spell was done.
"This is called the Life of Time Principle," Kazi muttered to himself, arms and legs crossed, surrounded by books. "No conjuration can last forever. It can last days or weeks if you’re trained enough. Years if you are a sorcerer. Centuries if you are a god. But never forever. Mana cannot be infinite and like all things, it withers to time."
Spells were written down in grimoires. Although grimoires pertaining to Conjuration were insanely expensive, Kazi had the money for it. He chose not to buy them though.
’Getting a grimoire and repeating a bunch of spells won’t teach me anything. I have to learn the nitty-gritty. I want to understand the fundamentals and everything that comes in between.’
Remember Godly Shape Control? That S-class skill Kazi developed from his Ascension? In the academic field, Shape Control was an important aspect of Shape Control. It was as it implied: controlling the shape of mana. Twisting and turning it into a recognizable shape.
From the tip of his finger, Kazi lit up a small fire. The fire grew and he stretched into a perfect rectangle. The rectangle then lost its fillings and was only made of its edges.
"There’s different types of exercises to learn to develop your Shape Control. I taught some of these exercises to Marta. Balancing and creating balls of fire between fingertips. Making shapes with your hands and having water fill it up. Each unique practices for each element." Kazi said. "For me, they were always easy, even before my Ascension. And after my Ascension, I was able push myself to master it to a higher degree. I was able understand how liquid each element is. Not just fire but all of them. Lightning, earth, water, light, and darkness, I intuitively know to manipulate their shapes."
When he was infected with the infinity that was Odin’s Eye, theoretically, his soul should have collapsed.
"The only reason it didn’t was because of me. I controlled my mana with a level of profoundness that the System could only describe as godly."
The fire in his finger tip became a small dragon. Kazi smiled.
"Ultimately, I used my Godly Shape Control to create Gargantua Super Strike, my strongest attack yet. A colossal mass of mana whose weight should have been too much to control."
It wasn’t. Not for him.
Shape Control was one aspect of magic he did not need to worry over, which was great since this aspect was regularly crossed with Transmutation.
"Transmutation: Manipulate and change the physical world in some way." That was the basic definition. "Transmutation and Conjuration, though separate disciplines, have a lot of crossover when it comes to its basic and theory work."
One textbook was labeled just that: "The Undeniable Crossover Between Conjuration and Transmutation". Much of the book went into detail on the Bases of Mutation. There were three of them: Shape, Density, and Size. In Conjuration, in every class, these bases were borrowed.
But Conjuration and Transmutation were separate and there was a big detail that did indeed separate them.
Transmutation was permanent and followed the law of conversion. How much change was dependent on how much time and effort a wizard or mage or sorcerer put in.
Kazi read off one of the last paragraphs of another textbook. "Start with small incremental changes. Mana, time, materials, and computational complexity are the major aspects of Transmutation and they each require years of study and understanding. For beginners, rituals are heavily suggested. Grimiores too if affordable.’" Kazi uncrossed his arms and stretched them high, yawning. "Buuut I don’t want that. I don’t want to do a ritual or buy a grimoire and follow it."
Create something from nothing and then transform that something. That was ultimately his goal.
Kazi stood up.
"Fire Ball."
From his palm, the flame ball burst.
"Stop."
Then stopped as he commanded, lingering in the air. Its momentum would have smashed it into the chair. Kazi squinted. "Okay, so...Divine..." His words stretched as he grasped the fire telekinetically. He felt the temperature, the flux, and the sheer difference in texture. His mana ripped it apart. "...Miracle Water."
Whoosh! The mana was changed and replaced and the fire turned to water! Huh, that was easy!
"But that took more mana than I anticipated."
About a thousand MP? More? Damn! Kazi didn’t have the Sorcerer Class equipped either. Again, he wanted to do this on his own. With Sorcerer’s Whims and Ultra Elemental Manipulation, he felt it would be too easy.
"Alright, I went from fire to water. The textbook said going from fire to water is the mark of advancing into a true Transmuter."
Mage, Wizard, and Sorcerer. That was the hierarchy. Sorcerers were the strongest, wisest, and most intune with mana. Throughout history, the definition of Sorcerer had been vague until the Old Mage Tower was founded. Certain skill sets were applied to wizards and sorcerers to differentiate them.
This was an example of that differentiation: to turn fire to water. To turn two opposite elements into one another. For magic-users who specialized in one or the other, it was impossible. For Transmuters, it was not. The impossible was made possible.
"Fire, water...to lightning!"
Crackle!
It worked! A bolt of electricity was in stasis. Conjuration was creating the original fire. Going from that to water and now lightning: that was Transmutation!
