Chapter 867: Section 572: Conflict (Part Three) _4
In the manor to the northeast of the town, crowds of people were gathering even more quickly, and some women and children were entering a warehouse-like building at the back of the manor.
"Our guests should have entered the tunnel by now, tell the cavalry and the Druids to try to capture them alive," Malin instructed the Druid, who confirmed before flying away.
Malin walked a short distance forward and noticed that Captain Val was still following, no, he had run in front of Malin, using his status to tell all the townspeople gazing from street-facing windows to close their doors and windows.
"He’s a man of great justice," Tuojin walked beside Malin, looking at the captain and remarking.
"Yes, and a man of principle too, it’s just unfortunate that he was born at the wrong time," Malin shook his head—if this man were younger and not severely wounded, Malin would have definitely welcomed him into his army.
But like Sudel, he loved the land beneath his feet too much, he was too principled, therefore, Malin felt he should help them as much as possible.
At least in this era, they were friends, not enemies.
That was enough.
Thinking this, Malin watched Val reach the intersection, shouting for the townspeople to take cover, and in the moment he pushed a man standing at the door into the house and turned around, the man was shot in the chest. It was only as he fell that the sound of gunfire rang out.
"At least four hundred meters, we have an opponent," said the sniper who had run over, immediately expressing his opinion, then the young man crouched down against the wall at the side of the street. He took the scope out of the box it was stored in and attached it to his rifle.
Then he and his assistant ran to the intersection, leaning against the wall, the sniper combined the mirror, Bayonette, and the bubblegum in his assistant’s mouth and poked it out.
"I don’t see any particularly conspicuous targets, but I see the Bell Tower, our opponents might be up there, luckily, there’s no sun today to reflect off our lenses," the sniper said, then he and his assistant ran towards the alley across the street.
Another platoon of infantry followed them.
"Karte and Delta Company take the alleys and advance with spread-out formation; machine gun platform, go to the front to draw fire; Dwarven medics, prepare for rescue," Tuojin ordered while continuing Val’s work with his Guards.
With one hand, Malin grabbed Joe’s collar to stop the foolish kid from trying to rescue anyone, while watching the man who had fallen to the ground. The latter struggled to turn his body over, trying to sit up leaning against the wall.
"Uncle Val! Don’t move!" Joe cried out loudly.
He knew why his Uncle Val couldn’t speak, because the front of his chest was continuously oozing blood, a through-and-through lung wound was incurable in such circumstances.
"He’s not gonna make it," the Dwarven military doctor concluded upon examining Val’s wound.
By this time, the mechanical platform had arrived at the street corner, it crouched down, using its broad frontal armor to block the line of fire, the Dwarven medics and their assistant ran towards Val, grabbed his shoulders, and dragged the man back.
"He’s dead," Malin sighed as he looked at the man’s frozen smile.
In his final moments, he was still smiling at Joe, the old soldier, seemingly not wanting to scare the young man with his death.
More soldiers appeared on the road Malin had come from, and seeing the situation, their lieutenant led the soldiers to flank through the alleys following Tuojin’s instructions.
Joe hugged Val and wept uncontrollably.
Meanwhile, the machine gun platform entered firing mode: "Lord Malin! We’ve confirmed there’s someone on the Bell Tower! A silhouette was seen through the periscope!"
Malin stepped forward to the corner, and two seconds later, a projectile flew in front of Malin, slowing down until it finally stopped.
Malin reached out his hand and plucked the projectile that had halted in the air.
Good, it was a bullet from the workshop, and it seemed so was the gun.
Sighing, Malin gave the order to fire.
The machine gun began to work, Malin left the corner, also moving away from the flying machine gun casings.
