Chapter 728: Section 503: Many Stories from a Small Town (Part 2)_2
If he thought there might be something between him and her, it would be something for the third layer.
If he thought about having a sister-brother relationship with her and they had the same mother but different fathers, that would probably start costing people their lives.
Oh, why do I have to be so miserable? I had long left the Quaser family, but today a messenger came with a letter from my idiotic brother, saying something like, "For the sake of our brotherhood, give your big brother a hand."
...I’m already nice not to have shoveled a pile of dirt over you!
With that thought in mind, Aemet Serk jumped off the circular intercity passenger train that had just been laid in Sydney Union in the past two years.
He arrived at the train station in Carterburg, considered an edge of the suburbs, got off the platform, entered through the city gates, and met with a member of the Church of Justice responsible for security, who checked his identity—Carterburg had really become a mix of good and bad lately, and to prevent followers of Chaos from blatantly slipping in, there were checkpoints set up by different churches at several city gates. Getting inside the city wasn’t a problem, just walk through the Array for detection, and if nothing’s wrong, you’re in; and if there’s a problem, the stake outside the city gates was always ready.
Aemet Serk, of course, had no issues and passed the detection, took his luggage from the grinning Assistant Priest of the Church of Justice, and Aemet Serk initiated a conversation, "By the way, I heard old Gaiate has also become Legendary?"
"Yes, just the day before yesterday, witnessed by our Lord, the Gaiates with three Legendaries in one family, really impressive." Mentioning this, the Assistant Priest showed a certain amount of respect and perfectly appropriate envy.
"Yeah, really envious, how come I can’t just walk out the door and pick up a couple of Legendaries." Aemet Serk also perfectly portrayed his jealousy, and successfully elicited unanimous agreement from the fellow church members.
Honestly, it was undoubted that old Gaiate’s two children were picked up, and precisely because of that, this sort of public envy and jealousy wasn’t very rude. As someone acquainted with old Gaiate and also a member of the Goddess of Harvest church, Aemet Serk’s remark was more an expression of envy—as he was also a bachelor.
"Mr. Aemet Serk, I suggest you could look in other cities. Recently, Carterburg hasn’t seen wandering refugee orphans for quite a while, those kids when they arrive are immediately rounded up and handed over to Lord Colin."
"Yes, Carterburg has been getting better and better lately. I’m a kid from the West City District. My father and mother don’t even have to worry about being robbed when they go out these days. He said this was unimaginable ten years ago."
"It’s Lord Malin who has given the citizens work and a new life, thank him."
The congregation mentioned the recent situation, all starting to express their gratitude towards Malin, with Aemet Serk feeling the sentiment as well—when he first came to Carterburg, a day without a death was a day the police were overjoyed.
Unlike now, where the biggest cases the officers handle are probably just a cat up a tree and an old lady crossing the road.
After some more chatter, Aemet Serk decided to go back and check if Elsa, that child, was at the Church—after all, ultimately this child was still the granddaughter his brother adored the most, his foolish son might be a bit stupid, but anyway, he still called him uncle when he saw him.
Forget it, this time let’s just consider it as helping my nephew out, the poor kid.
After leaving the checkpoint, Aemet Serk began his return to the Church. The snow grew heavier along the way, which made Aemet Serk miss the beautiful weather in the Eastern Region even more, days filled with sunshine were truly wonderful.
Passing an intersection, Aemet Serk heard laughter from ahead and, feeling a sense of familiarity, turned his head towards the sidewalk, only to see Elsa chatting with an old man. Aemet Serk flew into a rage—what wretched old man dares to flirt with his little Elsa? Watch as Justice’s Uncle Aemet Serk smashes his head in!
On a closer look, wasn’t that old Gaiate?!
...How could it be that old fellow, really, if I had actually charged up just now, it’s still a question who’s head would be smashed.
After muttering his complaints, the uncle from the Quaser family walked over, "Elsa, what are you doing here today?"
"Ah, Uncle Aemet, I was just talking to Uncle Gaiate about Lord Malin, my wedding with Daniel might even be presided over by Lord Malin." As she spoke, Elsa looked at Aemet Serk with curiosity and asked, "By the way, Uncle Aemet, where have you been lately?"
"I went to the Eastern Region to practice," Aemet Serk said, while avoiding mentioning enjoying the winter sun in the East Province.
"You’ve had a hard time, Uncle Aemet," his grandniece said with a face full of admiration.
Which made Aemet Serk rather embarrassed.
"Well, Emmet, now that you’re here, I’ve got to ask you too, Malin just said he’s bringing the whole family over for dinner tonight, I need to go back and get ready." Old Gaiate stood up, said his goodbyes, and left the coffee shop.
Emmet finally sat down: "How did you think to look for him?"
"Not really, I just ran into Uncle Gaiate today when he was passing by and I stopped him. I asked him, last time at Lord Anthony’s, Daniel must have seen how clever Lord Malin was officiating the wedding, he will surely be able to help me and Daniel," Elsa looked completely love-struck, and Emmet felt a pang of sadness—how awkward it would be for these two children if they knew the truth.
Ah, forget it, it’s not my place to meddle anyway.
That’s what Emmet thought as he pulled out his cigarette case: "When are you planning to get married?"
"Next year," Elsa said confidently.
Ha, next year, it’s a question whether you two little bastards will still be together this year.
......
Walking into the snowstorm, Old Gaiate felt maybe he had been over-suspicious earlier. Elsa’s affection for Daniel seemed genuine, the joy and admiration on her face when she mentioned him... didn’t seem fake at all.
This reminded him of his own youth, how he and Sophia had admired each other in the same way, yet they hadn’t foreseen the unexpected outcome that had awaited them.
Now, seeing Elsa and Daniel, Old Gaiate didn’t know what to say... Maybe this is the fate everyone must face when they learn about their origins... Ah, may the Lord have mercy on these two children.
The melon is still not tasty, forget it, home to cook dinner. Hopefully, his own child doesn’t come back too early; he’s got to prepare food for ten mouths by himself, and the pressure is quite big. Maybe he should call a few "Domestic Fairies" to help?
With these thoughts, Old Gaiate returned to his building, brushed the snowflakes off his shoulders, pulled down his coat hood, and as the old man stepped up the stairs, his mind was on the time when they had just found Malin, his daughter, and Malin running up and down these steps... In the blink of an eye, they had all grown up.
If it wasn’t for the help of the God of Justice this time, Old Gaiate felt he would have been gone for sure, not to mention having the life he has now.
With that thought, Old Gaiate suddenly heard something, he stopped in his tracks, looked up, and saw the door of his home open.
And the voices coming from inside.
"Dad, if you don’t come back soon, the food will get cold," Maya’s voice.
"I told you, close the door and add some more wood to the fire." Hmm, that’s Malin’s voice.
Hearing his children’s voices, Old Gaiate suddenly felt a sense of happiness. He walked up to the door and saw Malin in the living room with his family.
"I’m back," he said.
"Dad’s back! Welcome home!" Maya said happily.
"Welcome back, father," Malin spoke.
Watching his child stand up, Old Gaiate once again felt the warmth of home.
He happily embraced Malin and then Maya.
Thank you, my children.
