Chapter 1009: Section 651: Caucasus Trip (Part 2)_2
If humanity had not created these substitute lives, if it weren’t for humanity’s own folly and arrogance summoning the Evil God, this world would never have fallen to such a state. To simply blame it all on them—that is something Malin cannot do.
If they must truly be eradicated, Malin would not hesitate or feel regret over the slaughter of so many lives. But Malin would make this decision based on the right to survival, using the aphorism "One cannot allow others to snore beside one’s bed" as a guiding principle for their Fate, rather than hypocritically claiming it was their actions that dragged human civilization into the abyss, and then using such a baseless reason to justify their cleansing.
Because to act this way is to insult humanity itself. We humans do not need such hypocrisy.
"...But if you help them, this land will no longer belong to humanity. They will eventually take this place as their capital; they will also build a civilization; they will also have nations; they will also ignite the flames of civilization." The Goddess of Fate, who appeared as a young girl, looked at Malin and said, "You always prioritize humanity. Don’t you find that troubling?"
Malin laughed. After laughing enough, he pointed out the window and said to the goddess, "Before humanity became the master of this planet, do you truly believe this planet had no master? Scientists say the universe formed 4.6 billion years ago, but who can discern what’s true or false? We humans are merely the so-called masters of this planet beneath our feet. There were masters before us, and there will be masters after us. What I aim to do is ensure that the flames of civilization are not extinguished by Chaos. To me, they are worthy lives to unite with. My goddess, if we are fortunate enough to banish Chaos completely from our world, then if war between humanity and them arises again, I will help the side of justice without hesitation."
The goddess fell silent for a while. She gazed at everything outside the window and eventually smiled.
"Is your justice really so important to you?"
"Of course, it’s extremely important." Malin nodded and, staring out the window, chose to answer her directly without hesitation.
"Important enough for you to betray your identity?" The Goddess of Fate looked at Malin and asked.
Malin could feel the doubts of this deity. She was observing him, likely waiting for the final answer of this meeting.
"Yes, because I will not betray the conscience and moral baseline that humanity possesses. I am not a kind person. I can hang those who break the rules, and I can sign my name on the order of extermination. But all of this requires legitimate reasons. Without reason, I’m sorry, I may be a Butcher, but I am definitely not a madman."
"...I see. You are an unconventional person. You can leave now."
With those words, Malin noticed himself becoming transparent. He still wanted to ask her what exactly was happening to him, what the deal was with this girl, but the next moment, Malin realized he was back in his room.
The high-rise building was uncommonly quiet in the dead of night. They said zombies preferred living on the ground; high-rises were not their favored domain.
Matilda was still in her dreams. After thinking for a moment, Malin closed his eyes once more.
Though Malin couldn’t quite remember the appearance of that goddess, he felt there must be some deeper meaning behind it. Deities of the super tier like the Goddess of Fate, in Malin’s eyes, were nothing but prideful.
The questions she had asked—Malin felt his answers had no major issues. It was humanity itself that brought about their own destruction; this was indisputable. Though Malin always preached the need to protect civilization, he truly didn’t want to count himself among those who caused the calamity.
Hmm... In any case, that’s how it is.
Thinking of this, Malin realized he had shrunk again.
Shrunk?
All the better. Malin reached out and embraced Matilda—though not as fluffy as Clovis, Matilda was still just as lovely.
May our happiness be eternal, Matilda.
With such a wish, Malin slipped into dreams again.
......
"You tested him." The deity in the form of a young man stepped out of the teleportation channel, looking at the girl standing by the window.
"Yes, I tested him. I am a deity, and he has forgotten everything about me... For a moment, I deeply regretted it, because he forgot me." Standing by the window, staring at the dead silence outside, the city at this moment had already become a wasteland.
"What was the result?" The deity in the form of a young man sat on a nearby bed. The room remained clean and tidy, giving him a fine understanding of her habits.
"Excellent. He, just as before, holds firm to his principles. For a fleeting moment, I thought I surely must have done something wrong. Raphael always says sacrifices must be made to save this world. He sacrificed himself, spared his only offspring. And I... I placed my most beloved person on the scales of Fate. I don’t know whether I did right or wrong. His arrival indeed changed this world tremendously. Everything is heading in a better direction. More than once, I’ve wondered: if he too could become a deity and ascend to the divine throne, would we... have greater hope of changing all this?"
Saying this, the Goddess of Fate sighed.
"Even a traveler from an alien realm can accomplish this much. You and Malin surely wouldn’t have any problem. I believe in you, in your steadfastness to your oath. And I believe in Malin... People from your era, were they all so courageous and fearless?"
