Chapter 22: Ning Zhongze: I Will Sleep With You Tonight

Inside the kitchen.

“Hiss! That hurts!”

Linghu Chong crawled out from the pile of firewood, his body covered in dry branches. A sharp wave of pain hit him, making him look absolutely miserable.

“I’ve got to get out of here, fast.”

Ignoring the injuries on his body, Linghu Chong spat out the dry grass in his mouth, then came to the door and peeked outside. To his shock, Ning Zhongze and Yue Lingshan were actually turning back.

Without wasting another moment, he used his footwork technique and darted away under cover of night.

A shadow flickered swiftly through the darkness.

Ning Zhongze caught a glimpse of it and her heart skipped a beat.

“Huh!” At that moment, Yue Lingshan let out a surprised sound.

“What is it, Shan’er?” Ning Zhongze’s expression tensed as she asked.

“I think I just saw a shadow flash by over there,” Yue Lingshan said, pointing toward the kitchen door.

“What? A shadow? Where?” Ning Zhongze pretended to look around, then said, “Nothing there. Maybe you saw wrong. Probably just a wild cat!”

“Mm, maybe.”

Yue Lingshan nodded. The shadow had moved very fast. Other than her father, she couldn’t think of anyone else on Mount Hua with such speed. So it probably was just a cat.

The two of them arrived at the kitchen door.

Yue Lingshan looked at the wide-open door and muttered in confusion, “That’s strange. I was sure I closed it just now. Why is it wide open again? Could someone else have come by?”

Ning Zhongze blushed slightly upon hearing that, her expression uneasy, but she said nothing.

Just then, Yue Buqun arrived, spotting Ning Zhongze and Yue Lingshan standing by the kitchen. He called out loudly:

“Junior Sister, Shan’er! What happened here?”

“Father’s here!”

Yue Lingshan turned to glance back and murmured.

Ning Zhongze didn’t say anything, but her heart felt guilty and tense. She wasn’t sure why—maybe it was the weight of guilt over feeling that she had wronged Yue Buqun somehow.

Behind Yue Buqun came a group of Mount Hua disciples, who quickly gathered at the kitchen entrance.

Yue Buqun looked at Ning Zhongze and Yue Lingshan and asked, “What happened? What was that loud noise?”

“Father, Mother and I just got here too, so we don’t know what happened yet,” Yue Lingshan answered truthfully.

“Did the sound come from inside the kitchen?” Yue Buqun peered into the pitch-dark room but saw nothing obvious.

“I think so?” Yue Lingshan wasn’t completely sure either.

“Let’s go in and take a look,” Yue Buqun said.

He then took the lantern from a nearby disciple and entered, lighting the candle inside the kitchen.

As the kitchen brightened, everyone looked inside.

The next moment, they were all stunned. The place was a complete mess, as if a battle had taken place.

“What on earth happened here?”

Yue Buqun stared at the shattered rice jar, the spilled rice scattered everywhere, and the mess of firewood. His face twisted with anger and confusion.

“How did this happen? Why is the rice jar smashed like this?” Ning Zhongze also gasped in surprise, a look of genuine shock and confusion on her face.

Her expression was so convincing, it clearly didn’t look like she was the one responsible.

After saying that, Ning Zhongze felt so ashamed she wished she could find a hole to crawl into.

“Was it those brats sneaking in for food again and getting into a fight in the kitchen?”

Yue Buqun shouted furiously, his stern gaze sweeping across the gathered Mount Hua disciples.

“N-No… it wasn’t us, Master!”

The disciples shuddered at his glare, waving their hands quickly to deny any involvement.

“Hmph!” Yue Buqun snorted coldly and turned to Ning Zhongze and Yue Lingshan. “Junior Sister, Shan’er, did you see anyone suspicious when you arrived?”

“Father, I was just nearby. I rushed over as soon as I heard the explosion and ran into Mother on the way. We didn’t see anyone suspicious.” Yue Lingshan answered. She didn’t mention the shadow.

“Senior Brother, I didn’t notice anyone either,” Ning Zhongze said slowly.

Not that she could notice anyone—she was the most suspicious one here.

“No one?” Yue Buqun frowned deeply. He believed them, but judging from the state of things, this clearly wasn’t an accident. Someone had definitely been here before they arrived.

Yue Buqun walked over to the stove and noticed that embers were still glowing inside. This further confirmed his suspicion—someone had been in the kitchen, cooking or stealing food.

Ning Zhongze kept a close eye on Yue Buqun’s movements. If he kept checking around like this, who knew what he might discover.

“Forget it, Senior Brother. It’s just a broken rice jar. It’s been here for ages anyway—it needed replacing. No one’s hurt, so that’s what matters. Just scold the disciples a little more from now on,” Ning Zhongze said.

“You’re too soft on them, Junior Sister. Today they blow up a rice jar, tomorrow they’ll blow up the kitchen, and the day after they might blow up Mount Hua itself. We can’t let this slide. We must investigate thoroughly.”

Yue Buqun was truly angry. These boys were nothing but trouble—never a moment’s peace. This time, he was determined to straighten them out.

“Master, we’re sorry! We won’t do it again!”

Seeing how furious Yue Buqun was, the disciples couldn’t sit still. If he really started investigating, none of them would escape punishment—they’d all sneaked into the kitchen at some point.

“Hmph, now you admit it,” Yue Buqun sneered.

His icy tone made the disciples tremble.

“Enough, Senior Brother. They know they’re wrong. Let’s not pursue this anymore.”

Ning Zhongze spoke up in their defense.

The more the disciples were blamed, the guiltier she felt—it wasn’t even their fault. It was all Linghu Chong’s fault.

She cursed Linghu Chong in her heart.

Yue Buqun gave Ning Zhongze a long look. Considering that she had just narrowly escaped an assassination attempt and was clearly not in a good state of mind, he sighed helplessly.

“You’re always spoiling them. Fine, I’ll let them off this time.”

The disciples all breathed a sigh of relief, casting grateful and thankful looks at Ning Zhongze. Their Master’s Wife was too good to them.

“But don’t think it’s over. Tonight, go home and copy the sect rules twenty times. Hand them in tomorrow morning!” Yue Buqun shouted to the disciples.

“What???”

“Nooo!”

The disciples cried out miserably. Copying Mount Hua’s sect rules was a massive chore—they’d lose a whole night’s sleep!

“What do you mean ‘no’? Get moving!”

“Yes, sir!”

Yue Buqun bellowed, scaring the disciples into scattering in all directions.

Once they were gone, Yue Buqun turned to Ning Zhongze and said:

“All right, Junior Sister. Your body hasn’t fully recovered yet. Let’s go back and rest early.”

“Huh?” Ning Zhongze froze for a second. Looking at Yue Buqun, she hesitated—her heart had already built up resistance.

“What’s wrong?” Yue Buqun noticed her odd reaction and asked, puzzled.

Ning Zhongze lowered her head in silence for a moment, then said, “Senior Brother, I’d like to sleep in Shan’er’s room tonight.”

“Why?”

Yue Buqun and Yue Lingshan both asked in unison, their faces filled with surprise and confusion.

“It’s been so long since I last spent time with Shan’er. I miss her… Just let me stay with her for a few days, all right?” Ning Zhongze pleaded.

“This…” Yue Buqun pondered for a moment before finally saying, “All right.”

He, too, had considered it—Ning Zhongze seemed burdened, and perhaps spending time with her daughter could help ease her mind.

Yue Lingshan, however, was completely bewildered. “Dad, Mom! I haven’t even agreed yet!”

Ning Zhongze shot her a look and said, “What, you’re not happy sleeping with your mom?”

“N-No! That’s not it!” Yue Lingshan waved her hands and forced a smile.

Yue Buqun looked at Yue Lingshan sternly and said, “Shan’er, be obedient. Your mother just escaped a dangerous attempt on her life and is mentally exhausted. You need to keep her company, understand?”

With that, Yue Lingshan had nothing more to say. She nodded obediently and said, “Okay…”

She had no choice. That meant no more sneaking into her room to meet with her senior brother for now.

Seeing this, Ning Zhongze let out a quiet breath of relief.

“All right, let’s go rest.”

“Mm, yes! You rest early too, Senior Brother.”

Ning Zhongze nodded, then quickly pulled Yue Lingshan away from the scene of this mess.

“Sigh…”

Yue Buqun watched the two walk off, sighed, then glanced at the kitchen again, shaking his head angrily before finally turning away. He’d deal with it tomorrow.

Elsewhere.

Linghu Chong had returned to his room.

“Master’s Wife really didn’t hold back!”

Clutching his aching chest, Linghu Chong pulled aside his clothes to reveal a bright red, slender palm-shaped bruise.

“But it was worth it!” Linghu Chong suddenly grinned foolishly.

It hurt—yes. But it was fragrant, oh so fragrant.

Hehehe!

“Yaaaawn…” Linghu Chong let out a big yawn. “Ugh, I’m so tired. Time to sleep!”

After all that chaos, he was completely exhausted. He dragged himself to the bed and collapsed heavily onto the soft mattress. Sleepiness overwhelmed him at once.

Linghu Chong shut his heavy eyelids and quickly drifted off into a deep sleep.

Soon, the sound of peaceful breathing filled the room.
