Stand By Me Darling -
Chapter 81: Losing Hope
Chapter 81: Losing Hope
Talia was stunned seeing the firearm resting beneath her feet. At the same time another round of shots were fired at her and Talia dodged it and picked the gun on the floor and ran towards the fire exit and hid from the glass windows and the cameras.
There seemed to be snipers in almost every building on the South side. The first sniper was in the building in the South West corner of the Olympics building and this one is in the South East. There could be more than two, she figured.
The South East building seemed to be closed for renovation and it is higher than the building she is in. She’d be in danger no matter how many floors she climbs up, or down.
Talia blamed her stupidity for not investigating properly about the closed building behind thr Olympics Building and about the march through the streets before even coming here. She did a cursory check and those two details didn’t come up and so she came here without much preparations.
She knew if she go up, she won’t have a way to escape. Her only option now is to go down. But there is a riot down there and she didn’t know how many are waiting for her there. And those bodyguards following her were not in sight. They might be gone.
Talia felt the cold metal in her hand and looking at her hand holding the gun so skillfully, she felt her scalp go numb and a shiver passed from her scalp through her spine and to her feet making her knees weak.
Who knew holding a gun is like riding a bike?
She never was scared of guns. She knew everything about them and knew how to handle them exceedingly well. Seeing her interest in guns, her grandfather even built an indoor gun range for her in their property to practice.
She always had a gun with her and a lot of times that gun had saved her life. She always considered that gun her ally. Something she can rely on.
But after that incident with Cyrus, after she was forced to do something against her will, this tool she thought of her ally became her burden.
It felt like she was holding a ton in her hand. Her hand felt so heavy that it would fall off.
Talia held her right hand holding the gun with her left hand and took a deep breath.
’Talia, you need this for your survival now! Man up and be vigilant. Do you really want to die now?’
She took a deep breath and composed herself but she still wasn’t comfortable holding a gun. But she wasn’t willing to let go of it either.
All she could see was Fred’s face in her mind and she really didn’t want to die here. Now when everything got better between them.
She took a good look around. The cameras are her enemy right now and she should destroy them if she should give herself a chance to escape. She knew there would be only ten bullets in this model firearm and she was not willing to waste it on cameras when there are people with guns coming for her.
But it is necessary.
She pointed the gun in her hand at the camera and found her hand trembling uncontrollably. She tried to hold her trembling hand with her other hand and they still weren’t holding still making her breath heavily.
All she could see at the end of the gun was Cyrus’ face and her breathing got shallower.
’Maybe I should save my bullets and it might alert those from downstairs,’ she decided not to shoot anymore and took deep breaths. She knew it would be better for her to not rely on the gun now.
’Should I go up or down?’
She could hear some footsteps coming up the stairs and they were light as if they belong to someone trained.
’Up maybe? But how do I get down after going to the roof?’
As she was deliberating on what her next step should be, she was stunned by the bullets being fired at her, passing through the wall and she with no other way ran up through the stairs.
The ones instructing the assassin through the camera seemed to be guiding him well.
She was terrified as the rain of bullets followed her up and at one point, it even overtook her and she couldn’t move forward.
The entire stairs was filled with particles of brick, paint and dust was floating around making it hard for her to see. She backed off and got down the stairs and was startled to see a man holding a firearm walking up the stairs just a floor below.
She couldn’t make up anything but judging by the length of the barrel she could infer there is a silencer attached to that gun and that approaching man must be an assassin.
She stopped abruptly and the debris down there rolled under her shoes and she slid.
Her hand reflexively held on to the rails and still her feet couldn’t stop sliding and she felt her heart skip a beat.
But she knew if she fell now, she’d be finished. There was a wave of bullets following her from behind and a well-trained man with a weapon walking towards her.
Talia felt extremely helpless. She held back her scream so not to alert anyone. But all she wanted was to cry. All she wanted was a safe place. She felt despondent and despaired. She felt her eyes blackening out.
She bit her lips hard and used all her strength on her hands and somehow she ended up balancing and not fall on her butt.
Leaning on the wall, closing her mouth with her hand, she felt like she should give up. Her entire body was shaking and she really didn’t know what to do.
’What’s the use of running? My life will end no matter what. I should just give up...’
Talia lost all her hope and she saw the man approaching from her left and the stream of bullets at her right.
’Cyrus... If Cyrus was here, he’d know what to do...’
Without knowing she was crying and she saw the man pointing his gun at her with a smirk.
"You’re making it easy for me... Please die in my bullets. I want to get paid!" he fired at her.
Before he fired however, Talia stated running instinctively. Humans always want to live and when faced with extreme dangers, adrenaline helps them survive.
Talia didn’t know what happened afterwards as all she could hear was the streaming bullets being her and she ran with all her might upstairs almost closing her eyes.
After a while she looked back to see no one following her and she looked down holding the railings to see the man covering his face with a black mask and stuffing his firearm inside his jacket, left the place.
At the same time, the stream of bullets stopped hitting and Talia wondered if they have given up.
But she knew they wouldn’t have given up, but the hit on her must have been taken back.
Or, it could be arranged by someone just to scare her grandpa or the Royal family to make them see how vulnerable she is as a means to threaten them.
’So is it over? It really is over?’
Talia sighed in relief and holding the railing squatted and took deep breaths to calm her chest burning because of all the running she did.
Her throat was dry, her eyes itched and she felt half-dead.
What she didn’t know was Arthur’s threat worked and Olivia was made to retract her hit on her and so the mercenaries of the organisation who started the riot had retracted.
And she still was not out of danger. There was another organisation hired to kill her.

In the next building, the guy reloaded his automatic weapon while talking in his earpiece,
"Hello.... Hello.... You there..."
He didn’t know how it happened but as he was waiting here, he received a call and the voice from the other side led him pretty well till then and now the other end of the line, seemed to be dead.
He now has to depend on himself.
