Chapter 130: - The phone call-
"Come over here."
Wearing a loose top that hung on her shoulders, revealing the sports bra underneath, Ava called out to him with a delighted smile.
Olivia and Annabelle reacted in the same manner and outfit, but unable to speak a word due to the half-eaten skewers in their hands.
"Sup bro." Daniel spoke up, assuming a friendly smile of neutrality, while Blake only gave him a silent glance.
"Quite a build you’ve got there, Max." Taking off her gloves, Aunt Raven brought out a plate of corn and sat opposite him.
"Thank you." Max responded with a half-polite nod and a seeming shy smile curling his lips.
"No worries—boy." Breaking the corn, she handed him half of it, while also passing on a plate of grilled meat and lemonade.
"So, why would you even lock your door? We knocked earlier and almost thought you were dead."
"Yeah, if we didn’t know you were such a great player." Chipping in support, a mysterious glint flickering in her eyes, Annabelle gave him a wink.
"You play football?"
Appearing piqued, it was Annabelle and Ava’s mom who spoke up while tilting her head towards him.
’What the fuck?’
Casting a subtle glance at Annabelle, Max nodded his head.
"Yes, Aunt."
"Why are you so polite? Makes us seem more older and distant, you know?"
"I’m Raven, she’s Avery, and that’s Chloe."
Following the direction of her fingers with his gaze, Max realized that the pink-haired woman who was Ivy’s mom, Ivy, and his sister, including his dad, were not present.
"Raven, Chloe, and Avery. Call us that—if you don’t, we are old."
"Okay... Raven."
With a few words, she gave him an ultimatum, leaving him no choice but to call her by her name.
"That’s good."
Smiling, she handed him the other half of the corn.
A warm conversation ensued afterwards. Olivia, Ava, and Annabelle collaboratively talked about the ball game, making him chip into their lies from time to time.
He was also asked about his welfare in the past few years. Diving into school-related matters, they even asked about how many girls he’s dated.
When he said he’s only dated one girl, which in reality was a lady rather, they each gave him a suspicious glance.
"Tell me, are you gay?" It was Raven who asked this question, moving closer to him till there were just inches remaining between them. She stared intensely into his eyes for a moment before moving back.
"You’re indeed serious—" From her realizing expression after that, his guess was that she had thought of asking how many girls he has been with.
In fact, it was not only her but the rest of the girls except for Daisy and Avery: Ava and Annabelle’s mom, who appeared to be less interested as of that moment.
Being the center of their questions most times, he got to know his aunts’ personality.
Raven was the second daughter, intimidating but also the sweetest one among them. Her personality was more of Olivia, Ava, and Annabelle combined and with a natural mature grace.
Chloe rarely spoke due to the awkwardness between them.
’Most definitely, she was the one I fucked last night.’
From the way she acted though, she was the cutest among his aunts.
’Last born,’ Max thought.
Avery, her personality was a stark contrast to her two daughters. Reserved and calm most times, she talked but not actively or seemed like she wanted to.
’So my mom was the third?’
Figuring out the order of their positions, the little picnic came to an end.
"You boys can go."
It seemed like a casual stand-up at first, but Aunt Raven moved fast and grabbed Olivia and Ava before the two girls could make a run from it.
"No, no, no. Help!" Ava squealed as she was being dragged away. Meanwhile, Olivia still had her mouth stuffed full with barbecue and could only flail her arms at the boys.
’Kitchen work?’ Realizing the girls were being dragged to clean up the place, he saw Annabelle already packing up the dishes.
’Well...’ With a speechless sigh, he took a separate turn from where the other boys were headed and found himself inside his dark room.
Turning on the chandelier, he took a casual sweep of his room to see it had been tended to, clean and tidy.
As he was about to take off his shirt though...
Zzz! Zzz! Zzz!
The screen of his phone, placed on the side stool, lit up with a blank caller ID.
The series of numbers on it had no country code prefix, signifying that it was a UK number and not international.
Zzz! Zzz!
The phone buzzed for the second time and he picked it up. Swiping the green icon, he placed it by his ear and patiently waited for the voice from the other side to speak first.
"Hello?" A delicate fine voice with a tinge of nervousness within came from the phone.
"...Linda?" After a few moments of silence, Max spoke, his voice laced with surprise.
"It’s really you..." The voice at the other end of the line spoke, rising in excitement and joy.
From her tone, he imagined the happy look on her face, then replied.
"Yes, it’s me..." Nodding, he responded, making the person at the other end fall silent.
"Are you really in London?" Shortly after, her voice came again after relieving herself of the joy.
"Yes, my family home... Wait, are you also in London?"
Realizing the call number was within the country, he raised his tone and asked in a slightly surprised manner.
"Yes—after I received your text... I replied that I was also in London. However, you haven’t been online since then... made me worry so I decided to call... unable to take it any longer."
’From the way she paused amidst each sentence, she probably bit her lips.’
"Oh, that—"
Remembering the scene of him typing what could probably be his last message that night on the plane, informing her that he was in England—
"Been busy since arriving, never had the chance to come online."
Offering the best line he could, he heaved slightly.
Asking about how her mother was, he and all...
"...Is the date still on?"
