SSS-Ranked Demon Hunter: The Prodigy -
Chapter 51: Sneak Attack
Chapter 51: Sneak Attack
S-rank Hunters had taken control of the main street leading straight to the Association’s headquarters. They split into pairs:
While Jisun and Chanwook defended the main entrance, Minho and Sora were right at the heart of the bloodbath. Reina stayed in the rear, awaiting the arrival of Umbra’s elite troops.
Dozens of demons emerged from beyond the horizon and swarmed toward Minho.
The towering man skillfully wielded his massive axes, cleaving through the creatures one after another. Each of his swings claimed multiple lives.
For the first time in a long while, Sora too stepped into real battle, summoning her blood weapon.
"Kenketsu: Dreadmourne."
A colossal, slightly curved sword with tangled feather-like carvings materialized in her hand. Despite its immense size, the weapon moved effortlessly in her grasp, as if she were holding a leaf.
"I spent so long believing I was weak," she murmured as she rushed to aid her comrade. "Wallowing in self-pity, crying day after day... But none of that matters now!"
She leapt onto the demons’ heads, slicing through several of them in a single sweeping motion. Her eyes now wide open, she moved with a new confidence and agility.
"Minho, I’ll watch your back—go unleash your full strength!"
"As you say, beautiful."
Charging forward, Minho swung his axes with such overwhelming force that other Hunters could only look on in awe. His raw power was incomprehensible—even to the King of Humans.
"I don’t want to fight anymore," Sora thought, lost in her inner turmoil. "But these demons... they just keep coming. As long as you threaten my happiness, I won’t take a single step back!"
She threw herself behind Minho, covering his rear. Her long sword granted her an edge over the beasts, whose only weapons were claws and limbs.
Her fighting style resembled a blade dance—graceful, almost lazy movements, punctuated by sudden, lightning-fast strikes.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the street, Reina scouted from a rooftop. Her primary objective was to detect the arrival of intelligent demons—those capable of severely injuring even the strongest Hunters.
She led several squads of A- and B-rankers who dispersed in different directions to ambush the monsters.
Down that same street, several cars raced past—until a dark figure dropped from the sky, landing with such force that the vehicle’s hood crumpled like paper. The figure glared at the driver with contempt.
It was Seojun. Around him gathered Umbra’s elite units, faces hidden beneath cloaks.
"Let’s move," Seojun commanded. "Looks like the Hunters are guarding the main entrance."
At that moment, the entire squad surged forward—some bounding across rooftops, others charging straight ahead.
A transmission crackled through Reina’s earpiece:
"Elite units have arrived!"
Reina immediately relayed the news to the S-rank group through radio.
Suddenly, behind her, a familiar male voice called out:
"Well, well. Long time no see, Red Fox."
She turned—and there he stood: the Crimson Reaper. The two red-haired warriors faced each other once again in what could only be a rematch.
Reina knew well the secret to her foe’s defense—his body could only be pierced by brutish weapons with enormous blades. Her Kenketsu, with its slender rapiers, was ineffective.
Yet she didn’t flee. On the contrary, she resolved to stall him for as long as possible, drawing his attention away from the others.
"Where’s your katana?" she scoffed, noting he arrived barehanded. "Lost it somewhere?"
"Didn’t expect you to be so sharp."
The Crimson Reaper summoned not one, but two long katanas. Reina was stunned—how did he summon a second one, when he’d only ever wielded one before?
She realized the enemy might have the ability to alter the number of weapons of his Kenketsu.
They clashed soon after—powerful strikes slicing the wind apart as they collided.
Reina moved cautiously. She didn’t know what other tricks he had up his sleeve.
Altair—his real name—was a master of the dual blade. His swift slashes flowed like a folding fan through the air. He had one major advantage: Reina’s rapiers were short, forcing her to get dangerously close to strike.
He exploited this, lunging with multiple deadly cuts each second.
Still, Reina was faster. She advanced precisely, delivering several quick blows that gradually left shallow cuts on his body. Though minor, the wounds began to pile up.
"Tch. That damn speed of yours... It won’t help you. Scratch me all you like—it’s meaningless."
Altair hated to admit it, but he hadn’t managed a single hit on her. Reina danced away too quickly every time.
"But I’ll give you this," he muttered. "You really are worthy of your S-rank."
"I don’t need praise from a demon!" she said, lunging with a slicing assault.
Her rapiers pierced his abdomen—but he didn’t flinch.
"Your efforts are wasted, girl. You picked the wrong opponent. I can feel it... you’re already exhausted."
Reina leapt back, barely able to hold her weapons. Her ragged breathing betrayed her fatigue.
Altair saw his opening. With a powerful lunge, he slashed wide. His blades struck Reina and sent her flying.
Yet, Altair was shocked—the girl wasn’t split in two. But how?
Looking closer, he saw Reina’s body was cloaked in a dark clot of blood.
It was Kuroen, summoned instinctively in the split-second of impact.
The blood armor had shielded her in the nick of time—an unbelievable reaction.
Reina collapsed, her head hitting the ground. She couldn’t move. The Kuroen began to withdraw into her body.
At once, dozens of A-rank Hunters rushed to stand between her and the demon.
"Damn it..." Altair cursed, realizing he’d been outplayed. "She planned all this."
Then, his crimson eyes caught a figure leaping from a window of the Association’s building.
Crashing into the ground, the man landed directly before the main entrance. As the dust settled, the silhouette of a tall, black-haired man emerged.
There was something terrifying in his calm gaze—a serenity only madness could explain. Chanwook’s instincts screamed in alarm.
"Where the hell did he fall from?!" Chanwook shouted, drawing his twinblade.
"Doesn’t matter now."
Jisun stepped forward, summoning his twin spears. One thought lingered in his mind—why did this man’s face seem hauntingly familiar?
This was the leader of Umbra himself. His arrival was not just a declaration of war—it was a warning. The outcome of this battle could determine humanity’s fate.
"Rebellious humans," his voice echoed across the battlefield. "You will be the first to witness a new era of slaughter—Death’s very own weapon. I, Lee Yeon-ho, promise you this: I’ll be the last thing you ever see."
The Hunters froze. And in that instant, Jisun finally remembered who he was.
"Lee Yeon-ho..." he whispered.
Minho and Sora rushed to aid them—but were quickly cut off by Category 3 demons: half-humans.
Nearby, an eerie screech filled the air. The Death Icon revealed its true form and descended to stand by its master.
Taking a deep breath, Yeon-ho spoke with grandeur:
"Dear Hunters... If I destroy you right now, wouldn’t that be proof of our victory?"
Jisun replied with a proud smirk:
"You sound like a fortune-teller. Can’t live in the present, huh?"
"What I love most... is thinking about the future."
"That won’t happen. Lee Yeon-ho... I never thought you’d show yourself again after all these years. Or maybe... you’re just an imposter insulting his name? You look a little too good for a forty-year-old."
"Park Jisun. They call you the King of Humans. But are you a hero—or a servant of the system?"
"I’m the strongest." Jisun grinned. "Feel free to test that. My comrades are watching, after all. Let me show off a little."
"Challenging me to a duel?" the green-eyed man smiled.
"Exactly. Show me what you’ve got."
The leader’s lips curled in a grin. He spread his hands, blood pooling into his palms before forming into two jagged daggers—like claws, glinting menacingly.
"Then let’s begin," he said.
Chanwook, standing beside his comrade, was stunned. Three of the strongest were now surrounding him. Compared to them, his power felt laughable.
But he didn’t back down. Instead, he gripped his weapon tightly with both hands and assumed a stance.
Then—everything changed in a blink.
Suddenly, he was airborne. He hadn’t even noticed it.
The Death Icon had kicked him aside and hurled him through the air into a wall.
Shaking himself back to consciousness, Chanwook rose to his feet.
"What... just happened?"
Above him, Death Icon hovered in the air.
"Pathetic. You didn’t even notice my attack. Compared to the King of Humans, you’re nothing. And you’re supposed to be the same rank? What a joke."
The demon’s mocking voice enraged the young Hunter.
"Shut your mouth, you damned freak!"
Blood tendrils wrapped around Chanwook’s body, forming sturdy Kuroen armor.
"Let me show you who the real weakling is! Fight me face to face—without wings, you’re nothing, aren’t you?"
The demon’s expression turned grim. Descending to the ground, he extended his claws and opened his arms.
The two were left alone—away from the rest.
Throught the entire district, the clash of the strongest warriors was about to begin.
