Chapter 163: CH 163: A trustworthy person
Jackie leaned back in his chair, his hands steepled together. "It’s not so far. It’s only about a few days’ distance from here," he said, before concluding the distance. "By car, we should arrive in a day and a half."
Dave then calculated in his mind, before interjecting, "By beasts... I don’t think it should take that long."
Jackie’s face lit up with enthusiasm, his voice filled with excitement. "Then we must assemble some people to go to the location," he said. "We’ll need some people from the merger side, and some from the beast tamer side," he continued, his mind already racing with the possibilities.
"We need this to build a relationship between both groups, and what better way?" he added, his eyes meeting Dave’s. The air was filled with anticipation, as they began to discuss the details of their plan.
"I’m glad you noticed that both sides are a little bit on edge," Dave said, his voice thoughtful. "Like you said, putting them on this journey will build their relationship, but before that happens, a lot of rifts will likely occur between them." The words hung in the air, and Jackie nodded, his expression contemplative.
He thought about it for a moment, the silence punctuated only by the sound of his pen scratching against a piece of paper. "Their infighting might draw unwanted attention, thereby ruining our chances of getting the spaceship, the one and only spaceship we could ever get our hands on," Jackie reasoned, his voice filled with concern.
He leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing as he considered the potential consequences. "We need someone strong and supportive of both sides to be on the journey with them," he continued, his mind racing with possibilities.
He then paused, his gaze drifting towards Dave. "I guess I’ll go with them, then." Jackie said, his voice filled with determination.
But Dave’s response was immediate. "Nope, that won’t do," he said with a firm voice. "They already know your position in the faction, so they won’t want to fight or do anything stupid," he explained.
"If they want to bond, they’ll need to fight with each other and work things out. Only when they bond will they be able to convince the others who are doubting this alliance." Jackie nodded to Dave’s words, a look of understanding on his face.
"But that isn’t the main problem," Dave continued, his eyes locked onto Jackie’s. "The main problem now is, how do they pilot the spaceship to this place after they find it?" he asked, his voice filled with curiosity. "Is there anyone capable of piloting it?"
Jackie’s response was swift, a hint of optimism in his voice. "We could find someone, anyone who could pilot it. Retired pilots, an air force member or something." he said, his words laced with confidence. "It shouldn’t be that hard, right?" He leaned forward, his eyes locked onto Dave’s, expecting agreement.
Dave’s expression, however, was more measured. "Believe me, Jack, it’s hard," he said, his tone serious. The words hung in the air, and Jackie’s smile faltered slightly, his curiosity piqued.
"What makes it so hard?" Jackie asked, his voice filled with interest.
Dave’s response was straightforward as he replied. "From what I know, piloting this specific spaceship is far from similar to a plane or even any other normal spaceships."
"This is an apocalypse spaceship," he continued, "The controls are made so different from the regular ones. This is so that not just anyone would be able pilot it. And I also plan on implementing this rule for whosoever would be piloting our faction’s spaceship." he said, his eyes locked onto Jackie’s.
Jackie’s gaze narrowed slightly, his mind racing with implications. "So you at least know how to pilot it?" he asked, a hint of hope in his voice.
Dave’s response was a simple shake of his head. "Nope, not exactly," he said, "but I have the information anyone willing to pilot it could use, provided that he or she is a trustworthy person." The caveat hung in the air, and Jackie’s expression turned thoughtful, his mind weighing the risks and challenges ahead.
"Why do we need to be so particular about this?" Jackie asked, his brow furrowed in concern. "Can’t anyone just pilot the thing?" His voice was laced with a hint of frustration, and Dave’s expression turned serious.
"No, that can’t happen." Dave replied, his tone firm. "Our safety, the safety of the faction members, will be in the hands of this person," he explained, his eyes locked onto Jackie’s. "It can’t just be handed over to anybody. We need someone we can trust, someone I can trust to do the task." The words hung in the air, and Jackie’s expression turned thoughtful.
Dave’s gaze intensified, his voice taking on a more serious tone. "There’s another reason why I’m asking this question," he said. "Those people that will be sent to discover the location of the spaceship... they’ll likely try to take it and escape to save themselves." The implication was clear, and Jackie’s eyes widened slightly as he grasped the potential consequences.
"We need someone to go along with them," Dave continued, his voice measured. "Someone to mark out these specific people. They’ll be among those who might betray the faction in the future. For themselves, or for a rival faction." The air was thick with tension, and Jackie’s expression turned grave, as he realized the true extent of Dave’s concerns.
"But we’ll still need someone who can pilot to go along with them," Jackie said, his voice thoughtful. "And they must be a trustworthy person." He leaned back in his chair, his hands clasped together in a gesture of contemplation. "But how do we find this type of person?" he mused, his eyes narrowing slightly as he pondered the challenge.
Just as Jackie was deep in thought, the door to the office swung open with a sudden burst of energy. A figure strode in, their confidence and self-assurance palpable. "I can do both." the person said, their voice clear and assertive. "Both the spying and the piloting."
The two men turned their heads towards the direction of the door, their eyes locking onto the figures standing in the entrance. And then, recognition dawned on their faces.
