Chapter 46: Venn Settled
Couple of minutes later, Venn opened his eyes.
He has been tied to a the chair with a strong cord that Amy had brought. Amy, the young teacher was more than annoyed at Venn for taking this investigation too far. She knew who Venn was indeed and she had warned him not to try anything that might hurt the student, but Venn was always a monster when he was on the brink of discovery.
Rosa had been taken out of the room.
Amy sat opposite him and with her arms akimbo. The two strangers who entered with her stood behind her. They were dressed in deep black suits and they each carried a suitcase with them. They possessed a mean look as they stared daggers at Venn.
"What are you doing, Amy?" Venn asked angrily. "Untie me now or I report you to the council."
"You knew us first before you knew the damn council," Amy flared.
"What do you mean? I am only doing my job, Amy. Do you want to have problems with the council?"
"No, I don’t. But do you want to have problems with our association?" Amy asked threateningly.
Venn immediately shook with fear. He only just realized the situation he’s in. He looked up and saw the two men-in-black. Their eyes met and Venn shrunk back in a mixture of fear and worry.
"I think you understand now, Venn," Amy said. "You have really passed your limit this time. You’ve bitten more than you can chew. You’ve dared the association and worse still, you’ve dared the Morningbolt family."
"I didn’t dare anyone," Venn whimpered. "Untie me now."
"This is not the time to make commands, Venn. You know that." Amy said. She signalled to one of the men behind her and was handed a sheet of paper filled with words.
She said as she faced Venn, "I don’t know how to read, but I sure know what’s on this paper, and I’m sure you know too."
"No, Amy. I was just doing my job. Why are you doing this to me?"
"I’m not doing anything to you, Venn," Amy shouted. "Will you deny these allegations from the association when it’s clear you did everything stated here?"
"Amy, Amy, untie me first. You’re doing too much now."
"Why do you think I’m doing anything? I am only following orders from the Double-Wonder association. You tried to hide the fact that you have double quirks all these while, but thank stars, you were discovered. But ever since, you never followed the rules placed down by the association. You have always done as you wished, claiming the Earth’s council has your back and forgetting that there’s a double quirkers association you belonged to.
"It was clearly stated here by the Double quirkers association that you must not use your rage mode against a minor, and you did just that to a Morningbolt girl. Remember? Your rage mode can only be used against notorious criminals who appear immune to your normal quirl level.
"Can’t you remember you agreed to these conditions that day, and can’t you remember that the Earth’s council also agreed to these conditions when you started working for them? You clearly remember, I know. But you’ve always taken things into your own hands, Venn.
"And now, you’re receiving a sanction from us double quirkers and from the council... And also, you’ve angered the head of the almighty Morningbolt family. How unprofessional can you be, Venn?"
Venn went silent for a while. His head was bowed in thought, thinking of possible options to get him out of this mess. He knew he has really crossed the boundary here.
"I know what to do," he thought.
"The Earth’s council has my back. I can only be sanctioned by my employers, and not anybody else. The association can go eat some dust."
Venn thought he has a higher chance of being free if Earth’s council was the body arresting him, since he’s the most versatile detective at the moment.
Amy forced back a laugh before saying, "sometimes I wonder if you’re any older than these first year students. Do you know who you’re up against? Alfie Morningbolt can kill you right where you are by just signalling to one of his aides. If you say the council is supporting you, who do you think is supporting the council? Maybe you’ve forgotten what the system looks like, but seventy percent of the people working for the council were recommended by Alfie Morningbolt, and you’re also part of the seventy percent, you dumbass."
Amy stood up angrily and signalled for one the men to continue their job. She went further into the darkest part of the room to observe the proceedings. She was really angry with Venn’s sloppy job here.
The man on the left side steps forward, removed his dark shades and sat majestically opposite Venn. He flashed a quick smile at Venn and brought out a paper from his case.
"Mr Venn, I will cut to the chase with you... you only have one favourable option. You either return to the council with a false report on this case, or face the wrath of the Morningbolts. Which do you choose?"
"’aha, I see that you’re one of those Morningbolt advocates who go about handling the family’s dirty job," Venn snorted.
"And I see that if you don’t give me reply with your next sentence, I’ll take that as a challenge against the family. Speak wisely, Mr. Venn. You can be charged of invasion of privacy if this case got opened to the world, because you peered into Rosalie’s whole thoughts by using your rage mode on her... Not only that, you can also be charged of using your rage mode against a minor which is a punishable offence both in th Earth’s council law and your Double-Wonder association law," the Morningbolt lawyer said firmly.
Venn smirked a little after considering his options and saw that he really has nothing against the number one family. He regretted ever crossing the path of that Rosa girl even when he knew she was a Morningbolt. If only he had waited enough, he’d find the other student who was also involved in the mecha-men case. He knew there was another student that Rosa was trying to hide from Venn. If only, if only.
"I settle," Venn said finally with a painful smile.
"That’s a good option, Mr. Venn," the advocate said. "The Morningbolt family will henceforth forgive you of your misdeed against the precious Rosalie Morningbolt and all pre-planned punishments against you will be annulled. Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Venn. But note, we have no say on the punishments that the Double-Wonder association might have set in place for you."
"Wait, you silly advocate..." Venn shouted.
"Be professional, Mr Venn," the advocate said.
"Of course I am. That’s how professional I can be while tied to a chair and forced into an agreement. What do you think you are? The mafia from the ancient stories?"
"Voice your discomfort in an appropriate manner, Mr. Venn or our meeting here is over."
Venn took a deep breath. "Does this agreement also want me to close the case against the teachers that have been planning against the council? I’m sure you know about it, nothing ever escapes the ears of the Morningbolts... Can I still investigate on them or is that closed also?"
"We have no issue with you investigating the teachers, Mr. Venn. However, if you continue staying in this academy, we fear you’ll attack one of the family members again, judging from your past unprofessional records. So, the family wants you out of the academy as soon as possible."
Venn laughed out with all his strained might can permit. What he was thinking turned out to be true. "So, the Morningbolt family is behind those teachers as well?" he thought.
"Okay, I’ll leave," Venn said. "But how do want me to give the council fake but believable reports? I can’t just go back empty-handed. I’m the world’s best detective for meteor’s sake."
The advocate dipped his hand into his suitcase again and emerged with a few files that contains the information of certain students of the academy. He placed it gently in front of Venn.
"We have collated a few students from lesser families that might be used to cover up for us. They are ten in total. Go through them and select the one that best fits," the advocate said.
"I said I needed fake but believable reports, not some stupid files of weak students. How am I supposed to convince the council that these weaklings were the ones involved in the death of four mecha-men?" Venn said.
"You know how to do your own dirty jobs, Mr. Venn. That’s as far as we can help. If that’s all, we’ll be on our way. Good luck."
The advocate stretched his hand for a handshake but Venn only looked up at him with confusingly. "Oh, sorry. Your hands are tied," the man said before he went out of the room with his subordinate.
"Bastards," Venn cursed after they left. He looked over to Amy’s corner and shouted, "will you come untie me now?!"
Amy walked over to the raging Venn and with a single pull of the string, the cord snapped and loosened the grip on Venn’s body. "I will make you pay for this, Amy," he cursed.
"I’m broke the moment, Venn. I can’t pay you nothing," Amy replied.
Venn hissed and concentrated on the files in front of him while massaging his aching arms.
He flipped through the pages of the students information, trying to see which one might be useful for his fake report. He saw;
"Lambert Alfred." Too weak.
"Sylvester Marlon." Another Impossible, stars.
"Daphne Loki." She looks too innocent. But I’ll check her out later.
"Benson Banner." E-rank? What the hell did this advocte compile for me?
"Leo Rayden." D-rank? Let me go for this one then. He even has a laser quirk. And look at him, he has a troublesome look to him. His spiky hair, his dark eyes, everything... Yes, I’ll go for him.
Amy saw that Venn had stopped on Leo’s page and she was uncomfortable with that. She really didn’t want any student to be framed for another person’s offence but she especially can’t allow Venn pick Leo because it will spark another trouble.
"I wouldn’t pick that one if I were you," she said.
"Why should I care what you’ll pick? What do you know?" Venn shot back at Amy.
"Oh, sorry. I’m only telling you because that boy appears to be the Rosa’s boyfriend. Stay away from the Morningbolt family, remember?" Amy said cheerfully.
"Ugh... I should retire soon. I’m sick of all these," Venn said while rubbing his palm against his forehead.
His mind still remained on Leo’s file but he didn’t want to give it any further research since Amy had said he’s acquainted with Rosa, so he flipped the pages all the same, hoping to see another student that could be used to cover up the truth. Then he remembered something.
"Wait. This is the other student Rosa was trying to hide," he said like he had just discovered the greatest theory of all time.
"You never learn, do you?" Amy said.
"Okay, okay... Don’t mess with the Morningbolts again, I know." Venn said as he continued flipping the pages.
