Chapter 31: Lessons
*POV: Eden*In the book, each affinity is ranked by letters:
- S = +200%
- A = +100%
- B = +50%
- C = 0% (normal)
- D = -50% (you lose half of your base abilities).
These bonuses are proportional to your level.
As the professor spoke, I skimmed through the affinity details. Even as a Martial Artist, I wasn’t familiar with all the nuances of mine—my father always prioritized practice over theory.
¶ Fire Affinity
- Sword Aura: Speed (A), Precision (D), Flexibility (C), Power (A)
- Affinity Incarnation: Endurance (D), Agility (A), Resistance (C)
¶ Water Affinity
- Sword Aura: Speed (B), Precision (C), Flexibility (A), Power (B)
- Affinity Incarnation: Endurance (C), Agility (B), Resistance (D)
¶ Lightning Affinity
- Sword Aura: Speed (S), Precision (B), Flexibility (C), Power (A)
- Affinity Incarnation: Endurance (B), Agility (S), Resistance (C)
¶ Light Affinity
- Sword Aura: Speed (S), Precision (S), Flexibility (A), Power (A)
- Affinity Incarnation: Endurance (B), Agility (S), Resistance (C)
¶ Ice Affinity
- Sword Aura: Speed (C), Precision (A), Flexibility (B), Power (A)
- Affinity Incarnation: Endurance (A), Agility (C), Resistance (S)
¶ Sound Affinity
- Sword Aura: Speed (S), Precision (B), Flexibility (S), Power (A)
- Affinity Incarnation: Endurance (D), Agility (A), Resistance (S)
¶ Blood Affinity
- Sword Aura: Speed (B), Precision (B), Flexibility (B), Power (B)
- Affinity Incarnation: Endurance (B), Agility (B), Resistance (B)
Note: These bonuses may vary. Example:
- Against a demon, Light’s Resistance shifts to (A).
- Blood Affinity can copy another affinity via transfusion.
’My affinities are clearly among the strongest,’ I thought, closing the book.
The professor, arms crossed, asked, "What’s the difference between Mana Body and Affinity Incarnation? And what about the forbidden technique?"
Scarlett, from the back row, spoke up:
"Mana Body uses blood mana to boost the body proportionally to your control percentage. Affinity Incarnation amplifies certain abilities more than Mana Body but sacrifices others. It also depends on the Martial Artist’s strength.
The professor nodded. "Use Mana Body in prolonged fights, as Incarnation is mentally exhausting. Unlike Mana Body, which enhances perception, Incarnation doesn’t. Anyone else for the forbidden technique?"
This time, it was Morgan: "It’s called forbidden because the Scrutinizer’s Tower banned it. It forces control over blood/ambient mana resonance for a Swordmaster. Side effects include severe internal injuries and death. There’s also an explosive variant: violent mana expulsion, destroying body and soul. Often a last resort."
"Well done. Now, let’s move on to Dominion."
The students straightened at the term, all recalling the late Prince Lionel von Arcadia. After all, who didn’t know that story turned epic? I mentally nodded.
Dominion is a domain where a Martial Artist (Weapon Master) or Archmage imposes their affinity on the environment, expelling other mana types. Result: enemy weakening, self-technique amplification (+500%).
The higher an individual’s level, the stronger their mastery of Dominion becomes. It’s important to note that a martial artist must reach a minimum of five stars to claim the title of Swordmaster or Weapon Master. Similarly, a mage only earns the title of Archmage starting from five stars. These ranks aren’t merely symbolic and don’t truly reflect one’s actual power level—they determine access to Dominion, a power reserved for the most accomplished.
After a Q&A session, we left the classroom, following Professor Horn. Our group headed toward the common training hall, a space open to all academy students. The trip was brief. After a few minutes of walking, we found ourselves in front of a large glass door—smooth and flawless, faintly reflecting our images before we crossed the threshold.
Upon entering, the first thing that struck me was the sheer size of the room. It was more or less empty for now, but that was due to its monumental dimensions, which immediately drew reactions from the students. The space had to be at least the size of ten classrooms combined, with immaculate white walls showing no trace of dust or wear. The floor, smooth and glossy, reflected the diffuse light from the recessed ceiling fixtures. All around, tiered stands rose in an amphitheater-like formation, offering a clear view of the central arena. Already, many upperclassmen were seated there, watching our arrival with a mix of curiosity or indifference.
A few of my classmates flinched, impressed by the scale of the place. My gaze drifted toward the stands, where I spotted Setsuna. She gave me a wave, inviting me to join her.
"Guess I’m supposed to sit with her now that I’m part of her faction."
Morgan, walking beside me, smirked.
"Looks like you’ve really made your choice."
"Huh? What are you talking about, man?" I replied, feigning ignorance.
"Well, you picked Setsuna. Scarlett wanted you in her faction too, didn’t she?"
"Yeah, but that doesn’t mean much."
"Sure, sure... Especially with that murderous glare of hers. I’m sure she’s totally fine with it. Hahaha."
She’s freaking terrifying. I stole a discreet glance at Scarlett, seated farther away, her cold eyes fixed on the arena with a threatening intensity.
As we took our seats, a sudden silence fell over the hall. All eyes turned toward the main entrance, where the Saint of Force, Luxia von Arcadia, made her appearance. She was clad in her usual paladin armor—an ensemble both elegant and functional, adorned with golden accents that enhanced her natural authority. Her blond hair, carefully tied into a braided ponytail, cascaded over her shoulder. Her gaze, calm yet undeniably severe, swept across the crowd. Several boys blushed under her attention, but I kept a neutral expression.
I’m on team nonchalant.
"Is this supposed to be intimidating?" I thought, discreetly eyeing her curve-hugging armor and ample chest.
"Ahem."
She cleared her throat, reclaiming attention.
"It’s exactly noon. Welcome to this course, where I’ll teach physical training methods, meditation, and combat.
We nodded.
"This course is crucial for developing your power. Even if some already know the basics, I’ll reiterate for those who don’t."
She explained the difference between blood mana—found in awakened beings’ blood—and ambient mana, used by mages for spells.
She also outlined the three pillars of Martial Artist training:
1. Physical training (pure strength, no mana).
2. Meditation (blood mana control).
3. Technique mastery (Arts).
For mages, it’s mostly meditation, ambient mana sensitivity, and magic study.
Endurance potions should be avoided outside life-or-death combat, as their effectiveness diminishes with use.
Suddenly, an overwhelming pressure crushed us. I struggled to breathe, ambient mana blocking oxygen.
"As a Swordmaster, I can resonate at 15% with ambient mana. I won’t attempt Dominion—most of you wouldn’t survive.
She then detailed Augere, an elixir concentrate injected to stimulate blood mana. Varied qualities existed, some affinity-specific. It was a resource hard to buy without a faction, especially since proper meditation environments required high-quality mana crystals—not affordable for everyone.
