Chapter 153: Chaotic Breakfast (I)
When Adam woke up, he was at first confused. The ceiling was unfamiliar to him and so were his surroundings. That was until he remembered that he had stayed the night in Leo’s room. Glancing around, he saw that he was alone, Leo having left the room at some point.
Sitting up, Adam stretched before scratching his neck, slightly annoyed by the feeling of his nails catching on the faint grooves of his scales.
"Still there, huh,"
he muttered, pulling his hand back and inspecting his fingers. His pale skin caught the early light coming through the blinds, revealing faint ridges of clear smooth scales. He frowned but didn’t linger on it.
The room still smelled faintly of chemicals, the sharp sterile bite clinging just beneath the scent of something sweeter. Adam wrinkled his nose, rubbed his face, then got to his feet. The air felt strangely peaceful. Still.
He cracked his neck and rolled his shoulders as he warmed his sluggish body up with light exercise. His steps were quiet and his breath wasn’t labored in the slightest even after 10 continuous minutes of jumping jacks.
Adam stopped moving, his heartbeat steady. He rubbed his arms absentmindedly, noting the way the scales along his forearms had spread just a little more since yesterday. It was subtle, easy to miss unless you were looking closely. But he noticed and it made him feel like he was less human than before.
He pulled on his shirt and exited the room, padding down the hall barefoot. The floor was cool beneath his feet, the house quiet as if the world around him was still asleep but he could sense that there were at least 2 people who were awake.
Peeking his head into the living room, he saw that Lily, Aria and Crystal were still asleep while Luna, Leo and Rachel were nowhere to be found. Slowly passing them by, he entered the kitchen and saw Leo at the stove, cooking bacon. The sizzle of the meat and the faint sound coming from the fan masked Adam’s arrival.
Glancing outside, he saw Luna standing over a dirt covered body that lay collapsed in the middle of the garden.
’What is she doing?’
Just as he was about to ask Leo what his sister was up to, he saw Luna nudge the body with her foot repeatedly. The seemingly dead body began to stir and Rachel slowly sat up with the intensity and mannerisms of a zombie. Luna said something to her before she turned back and headed back towards the house.
Adam had a strong urge to start laughing when he saw the miserable state that Rachel was in.
’She definitely didn’t get a good nights sleep.’
She was caked in dirt from head to toe, her black hair tangled with bits of grass and soil. Her shirt was disheveled and her expression was one of pure and utter exhaustion. Nevertheless, she struggled to her feet after Luna turned her back and started walking back.
By the time Luna stepped back into the house, her face was calm. Not annoyed, not smug, just mildly inconvenienced. She walked past Adam with a simple nod of acknowledgement, her feet leaving faint prints on the clean floor. The faint scent of wet grass and cold air lingered as she moved to the sink to wash her hands.
"Oh, Adam you’re up? How did you sleep last night?"
Leo asked as he slid some bacon onto a massive plate that was already loaded with a bunch of breakfast foods. Pancakes, Waffles, Eggs, Bacon and even Crepes. Adam was impressed by the sheer quantity of it and couldn’t help but utter
"Why so much food? Isn’t some of it going to go to waste?"
Leo shook his head.
"Doubt it. Everyone’s probably going to be really hungry."
Before Adam could deny it, his stomach growled fiercely as if on cue. Just as he was about to come up with some sort of excuse, the back door creaked open.
Rachel stumbled inside, groaning under her breath. Her clothes clung to her like she had rolled down a hill. She didn’t say a word. She just dragged herself through the room with the stiff gait of someone who regretted every decision that led to this moment.
Adam blinked, biting back a laugh.
"She looks like she got into a fight with the lawn."
Leo didn’t comment on her appearance and instead remarked
"The Bathroom is down the hall on the left. There should be some towels already in there. Hurry up. Breakfast is going to be ready in a few minutes." .
Rachel paused only to glare at them both. She looked tired and unamused and clearly too exhausted to argue. Following Leo’s instructions, she trudged off down the hall, towards the bathroom.
Adam wanted to say something but Leo was already grabbing some dishes.
"Since you’re here Adam, help me set the table. Lily, can you go wake everyone up?"
Lily nodded her head and left the kitchen to wake up the other girls. Adam too followed Leo’s request and began setting out 7 plates, making the large dining room table look a little cramped.
After about ten minutes passed, Luna returned with the other girls following behind her like they were ducklings. Crystal looked like she was going to nod off again at any second while Aria rubbed her sleepy eyes.
Surprisingly Lily was the one that was the most awake and alert of the lot as her eyes practically glowed when she spotted the large array of Sweet and Savory breakfast foods on the table.
"Oh my god Leo! You cooked all of this?"
She asked with a touch of joy in her voice
Leo blushed a bit as he rubbed the back of his neck before giving her a slight nod.
"Really?! Then if I offer to marry you, will you cook like this for me everyday?...Oww! What was that for?!"
Lily yelped when Luna lightly smacked her stomach with the back of her hand. Lily shrunk a little bit though when Luna simply said
"That’s cause you are being stupid first thing in the morning."
Adam let out a sigh as he sat down at the table himself.
He could already tell it was going to be a chaotic breakfast.
