Chapter 151: Reconnection
The atmosphere had warmed up slightly between Lily and Crystal but it was still incredibly awkward. The faint mumbles of Aria who was lost in the land of dreams was the only sound in the living room.
’What now?’
Crystal had no idea what to do now and neither did Luna. Luna kept hoping Lily would come to the rescue but that was to no avail. It was only after 10 minutes of uncomfortable silence that somebody spoke up.
"So...You had some changes happen to you like Leo? Eye and Hair color changes?"
Crystal voice broke the silence as Luna nodded her head in affirmation
"Yeah that’s right. When I entered the game, My race was set as Warbunny. When I logged out, my hair and eyes changed. I also gained what I can only describe as super strength."
"That’s amazing. I am kind of jealous, not going to lie."
Crystal sighed in admiration while Luna floated a questioning look in her direction.
"Jealous? Why would you be jealous?"
"It’s because you and Leo basically have super powers now. Who wouldn’t want wings or super strength? I know lots of people would be jealous to have that."
Luna shook her head slowly in response.
"That is a very optimistic view of things but the reality of it is much darker than you would think."
Crystal shifted her weight as she looked directly at Luna with a serious look in her eyes.
"How so?"
"Well to start, the one who has the most serious mutation of all of us is Adam."
"The other guy that was in here trying to crack jokes? He looked kinda sleazy honestly."
The corner of Luna’s mouth twitched at Crystal’s impression of Adam before she replied
"Yeah maybe...But his mutation is snake-like skin, regeneration and corrosive blood."
Crystal cocked her head in puzzlement, not quite understanding what that meant.
"What do you mean by corrosive blood Luna?"
"I watched him stab himself with a knife once. His blood was purple and extremely thick. It also melted the blade of the knife into a puddle of liquid..."
Crystal felt her breath hitch at that terrifying revelation.
"Plus he has an entity that lives in his mind, whispering and talking to him all the time but he never shows it."
The other girl narrowed her eyes and asked
"Are you sure he isn’t faking it?"
"Well if he can fake splitting his pupils into 4 per eye and change his voice to something utterly feminine, he is the god of acting. But No, it is real. Leo has two entities living in his head."
Crystal immediately shot to her feet, the self imposed mask cracking to reveal a mixture of intense emotions swirling beneath.
"What?! Why are you only telling me this now?!"
Her voice rose an octave as she practically shouted in exasperation.
"Because nothing would change even if you did know. Plus Leo’s entities come from his weapons. They even have names: Astra and Mors."
Crystal’s brow furrowed as she gave Luna a questioning look as if she couldn’t understand why Luna was so adamant they weren’t going insane.
"I know that they aren’t crazy because I have a weapon just like them too. It’s called Kogetsukiba or Crimson Moon Fang. It’s pretty much a child still as it has only learned how to convey emotions, not words yet."
The skepticism in Crystal’s eyes only continued to grow which caused Luna to finally scoff
"Cat ears, Tails, Wings and sudden changes in eye and hair color are things you can take in stride but voices in someone’s head is where you draw the line at believability? That’s wild."
A faint blush creeped up on Crystal’s cheeks as she realized that Luna was actually right. She averted her gaze again and sat down while interlocking her fingers.
Seeing this, Luna couldn’t help but chuckle slightly.
"Alright. Alright. That’s enough about us for now. I wanna hear about you? How’s your parents? I know your Dad is the mayor but didn’t your mom do something different?"
Crystal’s eyes flickered with loneliness as she nodded her head.
"Yeah...mom is now an ambassador to some country overseas. I haven’t seen or heard from her in months. She doesn’t bother to call but she is occasionally on the news so I know she is alive at the very least. As for Dad..."
Crystal let out a soft sigh, her head drooping
"He and I haven’t had a meal together in weeks. The last time we did, it lasted all of five minutes before he went back to work."
Luna’s eyes twitched slightly as Crystal spoke, her gaze softening as she leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees.
"That sounds... really lonely,"
Luna said, her voice low but sincere.
Crystal gave a half-hearted shrug.
"I guess I got used to it. It’s always been like this, even before mom left. Dad’s been the mayor for years, and before that, he was still busy all the time. Always some meeting or emergency or event. He used to say it was all for the city... for the future. I stopped asking him to come to my school events after he missed three in a row."
There was a bitter edge to her words, but it was muffled by exhaustion more than anger. She blinked slowly, looking off into the distance as if she was trying to look into the past when times were better and she had been happy as a child.
"I get it," she said after a moment’s pause
"My parents are...different. They were never around much when I got older, but even when they were, they didn’t really see me. They had this image of who I was supposed to be. Everything I did was measured against that. Perfect scores. Perfect behavior. No emotions, no slip-ups. I had to be the perfect daughter or I was not good enough. "
Luna glanced at Crystal, surprised by the rare vulnerability in her voice.
"I didn’t know. To be honest, I always thought of you as some spoiled little princess who was always hanging out with my brother."
Crystal floated a wry smile as she remarked
"Well it seems that both of us are prone to making assumptions."
"That seems to be true."
There was silence between the two of them for a moment before they began to chuckle and reminisce about old times."
Another hour passed by before Lily returned from the kitchen. She had spent that time playing a mobile game and eating some junk food she had stashed away in a different spot earlier. Entering the room she was about to say something but remained quiet when she saw Luna and Crystal fast asleep on the couch, leaning against each other.
’It seems that they made up. Good..’
Lily couldn’t be happier after seeing her friend sleeping peacefully. Quietly she picked up a blanket and draped it over the two of them before she found a place for herself to sleep.
That was how the girl’s first sleepover ended.
