Chapter 90: Chapter 90

We bid Dan the Wizard a goodbye. Never catching those magical disturbances we could have helped with, or getting the chance to ask him out the sick cows, for all the wonder of an act of small kindness, we had greater issues to tackle.

We tried to return back to the Circle of Druids on foot..

"Morgana said she will link back up with us at Iris’ place." Tara informed us.

"We don’t have much else pressing to do." Iris said.

"I want to write some stuff down for my City. Let us head back and wait for Morgana." I said.

"I want to replenish some of my potions by brewing some more." Umbra added.

"Fine by me." Iris confirmed.

It was a silly choice to walk for we were soon stuck amid a hurry of feet as the news of the Western King’s death passed from ear to ear. Elkilbour was stirring and showing the first pangs of loss

"This is a long wait." Iris complained.

I thought about it and decided, "Let us go the long way. I want to take a look at what is happening to cows anyway."

"Or we can just wait or push through the crowd." Tara said.

"Master, could fly us over." Umbra added.

"I can, but there is no need. Come, unless if anyone has a problem with it, let us go by the farms towards the Circle."

"Why would there be a problem?" Umbra said defensively. "I just want you to fly with me again." She whispered.

"What is happening to the cows?" Iris asked with concern.

"You haven’t heard from the druids? They are sick. Many of them dead."

"Oh no." Iris said with noticeable distress.

"I mean it’s sad, not sure it is that sad." I said, wincing from her reaction.

"Tulisa was taking Samiya to go see the cows today. It’s going to be ruined. She will be so upset." Iris explained.

That news hit me, shocked me, far more than it should, more than I expected, "Oh no." I gasped. I realised I didn’t want to see Samiya disappointed and hurt. I felt, I believed, I should have protected her from that.

"Maybe we can get there before them."

"Only if we fly." Umbra put in.

I sighed. She was right.

I constructed a metal plate with added safety barriers at the side.

"Hop on all."

Everyone did and we soared off.

"Whoo!" I shouted as my stomach sank as we lifted off. Wind blasted into our faces with enough force to cause discomfort, but I didn’t go so fast as to actually hurt anyone.

Umbra stretched out her arms and screamed, "Whoo!" In imitation of me.

Umbra loved flying. Tara and Iris were a bit more cautious. I stocked it up to Umbra having more experience of flight. Umbra was brave enough to look down and point out the sights. To which Iris and Tara politely nodded in agreement to whatever she said.

I saw Tulisa and Samiya.

"I see them. Looks like we were too late."

"Oh no." Iris said again.

I took us down.

Flying by metal plate was a rather quiet mode of travel. Tulisa and Samiya didn’t hear us.

As we approached, I heard Tulisa say, "Oh sorry, I didn’t know they would all be ill. It was silly to come here."

"No, Tulisa. I insisted." Samiya replied.

I couldn’t see their faces, but they did sound upset.

I wasn’t sure what to say, beyond a standard greeting. Iris saved me the trouble.

"Oh, Samiya, dear." She said and rushed over to see them.

They turned to face us and away from the rotting corpses of cows. The stench alone was a lot. I rather wondered why they didn’t guess sooner.

"Teacher." Samiya said. "What are you doing here?"

"To see you."

Samiya smiled at that. She looked at me, "Everyone?"

"Yes, everyone."

She smiled bigger at that.

She came over to me and then explained in boring, dry, if excited detail all about the dead cows.

I listened and showed interest even though it was all things I could see or already knew.

"Can you fix them?" Samiya asked.

I shook my head.

"I think I can lift the curse, Master." She leaned into my ear and whispered, "If we use you know what."

"I’ll keep an eye on you, just in case."

Umbra smiled widely, "Watch me, Master. You’ll reward me won’t you."

I rolled my eyes, but I was smiling too, "Of course."

"You can fix them?" Samiya asked again.

"We can stop this from happening to more cows." I explained.

"Isn’t that good?" Iris asked.

"It is."

"You can, that is amazing, chief master." Tulisa said.

"Don’t thank me. Umbra is going to try first. I’m just going to make sure everything is safe."

"Amazing." Everyone said.

Umbra didn’t seem to mind me getting the credit.

I watched her observing ever act of magic and the flow of her mana. She spent time observing the curse with her third eye and then started to form a counter curse. The curse had spread far and seeped into the land. So, Umbra’s counter curse took time.

I think I could have brutal force removed the curse quicker. But, such a method would cause damage to the land which would them to need be fixed with even more mana. What Umbra was doing took far more skill, knowledge and frankly more elegant. At the cost of speed.

We all chatted while Umbra worked her magic.

I felt like I was growing closer to the women in my life. In fact, it was mostly women alone who were in my life from lovers, to a protector and even a child who I was responsible for protecting.

Umbra lifted the curse with a flare of magic and vocal chanting. I watched her carefully.

I’d been wise to observe her. I’d paid attention to the evil eye. It had been Umbra that had cast the curse in the first place, or to be more exact her evil eye. It was awake and acting independent of its host. A parasite who had slaughtered all the cows. For what? I could only guess. But malice was the motive.

The charm enchantment had failed and Umbra was a danger to everyone. Except a few stronger than her like me.

We all congratulated her and I said nothing of my suspicions for now. Perhaps I was wrong for that, but I wanted to come to her with a solution. Not give her anxiety.

We returned back to Iris’ place in the Circle of Druids.
