Sold to My Killer Husband: His Concubine's Dilemma -
Chapter 53: Without reason
Chapter 53: Without reason
Lilian’s vicious face was not known to everyone else, but Mira had witnessed it. Judging by the stares and glares Lilian gave Mira the day before, she would have had the same fate as the other girls from Scarlet’s mansion, perhaps only spared because of Edgar’s involvement.
The next day, Mira woke up before Liora. Instead of sleeping in her chambers, Mira had stayed with Liora, and Lily was nowhere to be seen. Seeing that the ointment given by Cecilia the night before on Liora’s face had dried up, Mira cleaned her cheeks with a wet cloth first. Liora’s cheeks had bluish-black bruises; it was the proof of how hard the maid had struck her. Although they had become less swollen, the marks remained and would take time to heal completely.
Mira applied a new patch of ointment on her face. This time, the soft touch and wetness of something being applied to her cheeks made Liora wake up to the sensation and the sting she felt. The ointment had worked better so far in healing her pain.
Liora opened her eyes slowly. She was still drowsy and in the same clothes she had worn yesterday. She groaned as she tried to move on her bed. The pain rang through her whole body and it wasn’t just her cheeks; her hands and legs were hurting too. Because of her resistance yesterday and the servant’s tight grip on her, she felt even her arms were swollen, and if she checked now, she would probably have bruises there too.
Yesterday had been too fast for her. It had all happened so quickly that she could barely remember everything.
Liora rubbed her eyes, which were puffy and sore. She looked around while still lying on her bed. Mira, hearing Liora shifting, walked to her.
"Madam, you are awake."
"Mmm..." Liora groaned as she tried to sit up, supporting herself with her hands on the mattress below. But her arms wouldn’t allow her, and she fell back onto the mattress, hissing in pain.
Seeing her struggle, Mira rushed forward to help. "Wait, madam, let me help you," Mira urged as Liora sat up.
Mira asked, "Madam, are you feeling better now?" She was really worried and wanted to know about Liora’s condition. If she wasn’t feeling well, Mira might just rush to Samuel and ask him to call that lady doctor he had sent before.
When Liora did not answer, "Madam?" Mira touched Liora’s shoulder.
Liora was listening, but she did not have the strength to answer, so she just nodded a little.
Mira, still worried, asked again, "Madam, are you sure that you’re good, or shall I call for help?"
Finally, seeing how worried Mira was, Liora tried to reassure her by placing her palm over Mira’s hand on her shoulder. "No," she whispered.
Mira’s eyes dimmed a little, but she did not repeat her question. "Wait here, madam. I will prepare your bath," she said before heading inside.
Mira started the tap of the tub and ignited the stove to heat some water to add to it. Then she prepared Liora’s clothes. While deciding, Mira picked out two different dresses and went to Liora.
"Madam, which one would you like?" Mira held up a dress in each hand. One was a fitted red gown, heavy and formal, while the other was a simple, plain red cotton dress. They were from the chest of dresses Liora’s grandmother had given her. Though they were still in good shape, they might be a little tight on her now.
Liora pointed to the simple dress.
Mira asked, "This one?"
Liora nodded but then mumbled, "Mira, it might be a little tight on me. Can you please unstitch it a little at the arms?"
Mira hesitated. "But, madam, why not let me find another gown?"
Liora moved her hand in refusal. "No." She requested it firmly, and in the end, Mira did as she was asked.
Mira helped Liora bathe. When the dress Liora had worn yesterday was removed, they both saw the dark marks on her arms. Mira felt bad for her madam; Liora noticed Mira’’s expression but said nothing.
As Mira continued helping, she asked, "Madam, let me dry you now?"
Liora, who was enjoying the warmth of the water soothing her aching body, refused to get out. "Mira, I’d like to stay here a little longer. You go and fix that dress."
She leaned back against the tub for support; she was feeling miserable. She could not understand why someone would hit her like this, nothing at all. It was nonsense.
But that woman... Lilian... She was difficult to understand.
For some reason, this didn’t feel like just a punishment. It was as if Lilian had something else in mind.
A slow tear ran down Liora’s face.
It wasn’t because she was hurt, but it was worse. She didn’t understand why it had happened. and that part was frustrating
Even when she had met Lilian for the first time, Lilian never gave her a chance to speak before striking her.
It took her back to Miral’s house, to the time when Evelyne would hit her without ever telling her the reason. Even when she hadn’t done anything wrong.
Was it really so easy to just hit someone like that?
To hurt them without reason?
Not when the other person had done nothing to deserve it.
But now, she wanted answers.
Liora rubbed her eyes, took a little water from the bathtub, and splashed it on her face, as if washing away her tears.
Lilian had acted yesterday, but the reason was never told.
Even if Liora considered that she had been bought by Lilian, did that mean she could be beaten like this?
’Was itcomplimentary?’
she thought .On the same day, it was not just Liora who woke up; Lucien too, had also woken up, hours before Liora did. But his body was different; even though harmed, he had woken up, battling and winning against the poison.
He was just lying on his bed like that for an hour. He remembered Roseria had come to him, and that brought a smile to his face. She was a timid little girl. He chuckled. Then he removed the bandages from his shoulder. When it fell off, he saw that the bruise was red now, showing signs that the poison affecting his body was now healing.
He was not hungry; someone must have fed him while he was sleeping. That person must have been Roseria.
He woke up, and as if to check on him, Rowan came into the room. Lucien asked him about Roseria being in the room. Rowan mentioned the details of her crying and being worried about her brother.
Rowan was so delighted that Lucien woke up and was better than yesterday that he wanted to tell everyone in the house, but Lucien’s orders were not to—maybe Roseria would wake up.
Lucien could not wait to spend time with his sister.
Yesterday, when Samuel was in the house, Rowan had gone to the physician. Luckily, he did not have to go to the capital to meet them there, as he met them halfway on the road through the forest. They had told him that the poison might reduce, but its effects would be there for a longer period. It might include sudden dizziness, and the poison was the kind that attacks a person’s immunity. For Lucien to be safe and healthy, he must avoid alcohol for a while, which Rowan knew was a difficult task by now; he must have been addicted.
Rowan had also asked the physician for one more thing, which was to determine the origin of the poison. Although this led to banter between the physician and Rowan when asked for the charges, this angered Rowan, as he had a reduced salary. Unlike back when he was a commander and earned well, as Lucien’s apprentice, he was also removed from all royalty. He and many others had stood for Lucien till the end and had lost their jobs.
In the end, after the banter, Rowan ended up giving the physician money, which made the physician grin. He asked Rowan to wait and said that he would send the news soon.
Rowan then went home. Since Samuel was in the house, he came to work at night and looked after Lucien. He did not want Lucien to see anyone else in his room, as that might just agitate him.
Soon after Samuel arrived, he was also feeling good, seeing his master doing well.
"Master, are you fine?"
Lucien just hummed while looking at a scroll.
Samuel took this chance to tell Rowan and Lucien about yesterday’s events. Rowan and Samuel had not met after Rowan went to see the physician.
"Master..." Samuel began hesitantly. "Yesterday... Her Highness, the Queen Dowager, was here."
Lucien hummed again. "I know. Rowan already told me."
Rowan, who was there in the room, shuddered. "I get bad vibes around her."
As soon as he said that, Lucien’s blue eyes, which were drowsy yesterday, now darkened. Rowan, noticing that, put his hands up in defense.
"No, no, Master, you are getting me wrong. I heard around here that she was too harsh yesterday."
"What did she do?" Lucien asked as he frowned
