Chapter 49: blames and hurdles
Chapter 49: blames and hurdles
Edgar looked at Layla and asked, "Are you sure, madam?"
Layla nodded. "Yes, I like the surroundings here and would like to stay for a while."
Edgar took note of her request. "Then I shall ask your maids to follow here."
Layla smiled widely. She assumed that Lilian didn’t care much about Liora. Layla had no idea that Lilian had actually bought Liora. She thought it was just a typical concubine selection, where the mother of the man picked a girl to manage the household.
Layla knew what had happened with Lucien. She had wanted to be the one chosen, but instead, Lucien had married someone else. She had frequently visited the palace over the years under the pretense of seeing Ellora, but in truth, it had always been Lucien she sought to see.
Ellora had been married to Alden, bound to become queen since their marriage had been arranged by Lilian when they were just nine years old. Watching her sister marry Alden, Layla had foolishly believed she might one day be wed to Lucien—her first crush and now, her love.
That dream was shattered when Lilian arranged his marriage elsewhere.
The reason remained confidential. Lucien never spoke of it, but soon after his wedding, within a month, news spread that his wife was expecting a child.
That was the day Layla hated the most, as she had wished to be in that woman’s place.
The biggest hurdle for her approaching Lucien has been that Ellora and Layla were the only heirs to the throne of Valeria; one of them had to marry within their homeland. That had been Layla’s burden. She had received proposals from various second princes, but none had worked out, a few due to complicated political reasons and others were just rejected by Layla.
But she felt a bit pleased now. Ellora may have allowed her to visit Lucien, but she would never allow her to get close to him. Given Lucien’s past, she feared Layla might end up like his first wife.
Other than her status of being crown princess, there was one more reason for Lucien to attack her; it was that her father had voted against Lucien when the court decided his fate. Although her father was king of another country, he was a trade partner, and being Ellora’s father, he voted against Lucien. While some nobles sought his exile, Layla’s father had voted for his execution, calling for a life in exchange for a life.
Layla wanted to stay and observe how Lucien would treat her. In his current state, he could do nothing. And since Lilian had just visited, it was unlikely she would return soon.
So now, despite Lucien having a concubine, Layla wasn’t deterred. She saw Liora as no threat to her; she was just a powerless, weak-willed girl who had failed to win Lilian’s favor.
Taking his leave, Edgar walks away from Layla.
Samuel remained in the room, waiting for the stretcher to arrive. He glanced at Layla from the side, but she simply stood and left without acknowledging him. A man of his status didn’t matter to her. and for Samuel it was not like he cared about her. This was not palaceand no one was here after Edgar left to reprimand him for not bowing to Layla
Keeping that aside, Samuel then turned to Mira. She was crying continuously while staring at Liora. It had all happened so suddenly that Mira blamed herself for Liora’s condition.
Watching her cry, he felt pity for her but he needed answers, so Samuel finally spoke.
"Why did they slap her? Do you know?" He got straight to the point.
Mira took a second or two before answering; her voice was raspy from weeping.
"No, I don’t know, sir."
Her answer didn’t satisfy Samuel.
"Aren’t you Madam’s lady-in-waiting? You would know the reason, but here you are refusing to tell me?" He pressed the question on her.
Mira’s brows furrowed in frustration. "I told you, sir, I don’t know where she was."
She wasn’t usually rude, but today had been too much. The last thing she wanted was to face Lilian again. That was why she had asked Edgar to let her stay with Liora when she found out Liora would be living away from the house and she gave the name for being Lady in Waiting of Liora.
But after today, maybe she really was a jinx, just as she had been called before.
Mira’s mind was pooling with questions while cursing herself; she didn’t seem to hear Samuel’s next question.
Samuel bent down, balancing himself on his feet, and sighed. He moved his hand in front of her to get her attention.
"Mira, look at me," he asked her.
Slowly, she raised her head, her red, swollen eyes meeting his.
"Do as I asked, okay? I’ll go get the doctor."
Mira hesitated. "But... the doctor will take a long time to get here, won’t she?"
Samuel assured her, "Don’t worry, she’ll be here soon. Just make sure no one sees Madam being treated."
Mira tilted her head. "Why?"
Samuel sighed. "That’s what you should have been paying attention to. Didn’t Princess Layla just say she’ll be staying here?"
Mira frowned. "Sir, if I may ask... why would Madam Layla care about this?"
Samuel’s expression darkened. "Don’t ask too many questions."
Mira jolted at his sharp tone and quickly replied, "Understood, sir."
"Good."
With that, Samuel took one last glance at Liora before getting up and walking out into the hallway.
She was in a maid’s dress that day... why would she do that? Samuel wondered as he headed to the room where Lily and the doctor were.
As Samuel entered, he walked toward the doctor, but Lily stepped between them.
"How is Madam? Did you stop it?" she asked anxiously.
Samuel sighed. "I tried, but before I could reach there, Madam had already lost consciousness. So I just ordered her to be taken to her room."
Lily’s eyes welled with tears, and even the doctor looked disheartened.
Samuel hesitated before speaking again, but he had to "Lily."
Lily hummed in response, trying to hold back her tears.
Samuel softened his voice. Lily had been a great help to him. Even though she served the household, her loyalty was to Liora. Yet when Samuel had asked her to keep watch over the other patient and keep it secret, she had done so without question.
Samuel frowned. "It’s unusual for Lilian to strike a girl like that. Do you have any idea why she did?"
Lily tried to answer, but in her struggle to suppress her sobs, she sobbed and only a small squeak escaped from her mouth.
"Yes, I know," she finally whispered.
She lowered her gaze, avoiding Samuel’s eyes. "Sir..." she hesitated.
Samuel arched a brow. "Hmm?"
"Madam was here... before she went to the tea house."
Samuel nodded. "Okay."
That is then; realization struck him and his eyes widened.
"What?!" he exclaimed.
