Chapter 1223: Chapter 134 : A Vial of Hope

*Rion*

Daphne and I had been worried about Eva. The longer she was in the hospital, the more anxious and almost depressed she seemed to become.

I couldn’t blame her necessarily. I remembered my time in the Breles hospital. While all the healers and nurses there were kind and competent, it still was far from my favorite place to be.

Eva’s condition, while thankfully stable now, didn’t seem to be getting much better. The healers warned us that it was only a matter of time before she started to get worse again. Then, she would need to undergo more intensive treatment to get her back to feeling even remotely healthy.

Then, until a real cure was found, that painful cycle would continue.

Lately, Eva’s condition had been stable enough that she could leave the hospital for small periods of time. I was so grateful for Jasper when I heard that he was going to take her and the boys out to explore the city.

Obviously, I was happy for Eva and the boys. Daphne and I had offered to take the boys out for a day on several occasions, but they always wanted to stay by their mother’s side. Daphne and I were both touched by their devotion but concerned as well.

“They need to be able to play like normal children,” Daphne told me one evening after we tucked our girls in for the night. “I understand that they’re worried about Eva, but they can’t stay cooped up in the hospital all day, every day.”

I let out a long breath, even though I agreed with her completely. “They aren’t normal children though,” I reminded her carefully. “And it is good for Eva to have them there as well.”

We were thrilled when Jasper asked us to join them for dinner at a nice restaurant in the heart of the city. Jasper asked us to dress nicely. Daphne was all too excited to spend the day shopping for frilly little dresses for the girls as well as more formal wear for her and me.

I watched Daphne as she got ready for the dinner. It took her a while to find a gown that she liked out of those she’d purchased. She tried on several before finally choosing a deep maroon dress that flowed around her knees.

She didn’t normally take a while to choose clothing, but her pregnancy was progressing steadily these days, and she had a large, defined bump between her hips. It made getting dressed alone quite a chore for her, and I often happily assisted her in the simple task.

I gazed at Daphne in awe. She complained that she looked like a whale in the dress, but I thought she looked radiant. She seemed to be glowing even more than she had with our girls.

“You are beautiful,” I told her, wrapping my arms around her from behind so that I could caress her round tummy.

About an hour later, we were seated around an extravagant table with expensive dishes and glasses. I glanced at Eva and Jasper as we ate and couldn’t help but notice that they were acting strangely.

Daphne glanced over at me wordlessly, and I knew that she felt the same. The two seemed happy, but there was something else in their expressions as well. There was a kind of tension that I couldn’t place.

I could tell that Daphne was gearing up to ask the two if something was wrong when Eva thrust her left hand out to reveal an intricate ring with swirling patterns and a glittering blue stone in the center.

Daphne’s jaw dropped, while my eyes nearly bugged out of my head.

“We’re engaged,” Jasper said proudly, wrapping an arm around my sister’s shoulders.

Eva beamed at us both as we quickly recovered and stood from our seats to embrace the newly engaged couple.

“I’m so, so happy for you!” Daphne gushed, hugging Eva tightly.

Eva giggled and hugged her back. “Thank you so much,” she said. She then grabbed Daphne’s shoulders and pushed her away so she could look her in the eye. “Would you be my maid of honor?”

Daphne’s round hazel eyes filled with tears, and she nodded, her head bobbing up and down, and she threw her arms around my sister again, sobs shaking her body.

I smiled sheepishly at Eva, who was staring straight at me with concern etched across her face. Daphne was more emotional than normal these days due to the pregnancy.

I turned to Jasper expectantly. He just shrugged his shoulders. “Wanna be my best man?”

I grinned at him and shrugged back. “Sure, man.” I grabbed his hand and slapped him hard on the shoulder.

Jasper and I were playing it cool, but we glanced at each other, and I could tell we were both feeling the extent of just how much our relationship had grown over the past several years. He was no longer just my best friend. He was my Beta, and very soon, he would be my brother.

I punched him hard in the shoulder, right on top of where I had slapped him. “You do anything to hurt her or make her cry and you’re a dead man,” I told him firmly.

Jasper just grinned at me. “Oh, I’m counting on it.”

Dinner was extremely lively after the news of Eva and Jasper’s engagement. Even the children seemed to be in an especially good mood.

I watched with pride as Aster and Tarik tended to my daughters, dutifully feeding them and cutting up their food for them. Despite their powers, it was clear that the boys had good hearts. They were already protective of the girls.

As we were getting ready to leave the restaurant, Eva pulled me aside.

“I spoke with the head healer,” she announced, her lips set into a thin line as she delivered the news. “She told me that the only way they can see me even having a chance at a full recovery, they would need to surgically remove the First Witch’s bones from inside of me.”

I stared down at her, a bad feeling settling deep within me. I felt my countenance darken. “That doesn’t sound like a simple procedure,” I noted grimly.

Eva laughed without humor and shook her head. “It definitely isn’t,” she confirmed. She looked down at her tiny black shoes. “In fact, it would be quite the invasive procedure that would be followed by a long, difficult recovery. And there’s apparently no guarantee of success either.”

Worry twisted in my gut, but when Eva lifted her chin to look up at me, the determination that I knew so well was all over her round face.

“But you’re thinking of going through with it anyway,” I said, not liking the thought at all. But what choice did we have if nothing else was working?

Eva nodded solemnly. “I’m sick of feeling this way, Rion,” she said. “If there’s even a slim chance of regaining my health, I think I want to take it.”

I understood. I felt similarly toward getting my memories back, but that wasn’t life or death for me as this was for Eva.

I grabbed Eva’s arm and pulled her against me so I could wrap my arms around her. “You know that I’ll support you no matter what,” I said.

She hugged me back. “Thanks, Brother.”

After dropping Daphne and the girls off at the little but extravagant guest house we were calling home here in Celestial City, I headed back out and made my way toward the infirmary.

I burst through the doors, feeling desperation spurring me into action. Maybe Eva didn’t need to undergo such a risky surgery, after all. Maybe there was something I could do.

“I need to speak to the head healer,” I told the young woman at the counter.

The girl raised a thin eyebrow at me suspiciously. “I’m afraid that Healer Myra doesn’t really have time for consultations at the moment. She is way too busy tending to dozens of patients today.”

“I understand,” I told her. “But please tell her that I am Eva Stormfall’s brother and that I might have a way to save her.”

The young woman’s eyebrows went up, and she sent for another worker to do just that.

Eva’s healer came rushing up to me. “Mr. Stormfall? I understand you have information regarding Eva’s condition?”

I had spoken to her a few times, but I could see the genuine concern in the young healer’s eyes now, and it made me immediately feel even more compassion toward her. “Yes, Healer Myra. My blood has helped my sister regain her strength in the past. I wonder if your healers would be able to create a potion using my blood to heal her.”

The healer’s warm brown eyes rounded before they looked far away. She glanced at a couple of other healers and nodded meaningfully. “Yes, that could be exactly what we need for Eva. You must both harbor magic from a similar source. Perhaps those similarities will be enough to stabilize your sister.”

Hope stirred in my gut, and I nodded, confidence soaring at the healer’s excitement.

“Come with me please Mr. Stormfall,” Myra said, gesturing down the hall before taking off.

I was surprised when we entered Eva’s room. My sister was awake, sitting up in bed with a book on her lap. Her round eyes widened when she saw me. “Rion, what are you doing here this late? Is something wrong?”

“Your brother believes that his blood might have the healing properties that we’ve been searching for,” Healer Myra explained before she turned to me. “We will need a large vial of your blood, Mr. Stormfall. I imagine you’ll have no issue with that?”

“No issue at all,” I said.

Moments later, a vial of my blood was being poured directly into a container that was attached to Eva’s wrist by a long tube. I watched as my blood flowed through the translucent tube and into my sister’s wrist. Eva winced at the pain of having the liquid flow through her veins, but a short moment later, her eyes brightened, and some color returned to her cheeks.

“Extraordinary,” the head healer said in amazement. She looked at the screens across the room, her eyes scanning the numbers there. “Your vitals have improved, Eva, not nearly as much as I would like to see, only by a couple of units, but still! This is very promising.”

Eva and I glanced at each other with wide, hopeful eyes.

“Mr. Stormfall, would you be able to provide us with a little bit more of your blood? We’ll need samples to figure out how to make such a complicated healing potion.”

“Of course,” I said at once.

“Rion!” Eva protested. Then she looked at Myra. “Please, couldn’t that wait until tomorrow at least? He has already given a lot of blood. Let’s wait.”

Myra nodded. “Of course,” she said and then turned to me. “My apologies, Mr. Stormfall. We can get those samples from you tomorrow if you’d like.”

“No, I would like to supply them now,” I said to the healer, already sitting so they could take the donations. I glanced at my sister. “Please do everything you can to save my sister.”

Eva’s jaw dropped and her eyes watered. “Rion....”

Myra gave me a reassuring smile that did help me relax just a bit. “You have my word.”
