Chapter 1222: Chapter 133 : Despite Everything
*Eva*
The fact that I was in a fancy hospital didn’t change the fact that I was, well, in a hospital.
I had no idea how long it took us to travel from Drogomor to Celestial City because the sleep I was getting was messing with my grasp of time.
The healers back on Drogomor, in an effort to make me as comfortable as possible, decided it would be best to equip me with some powerful potions that were supposed to numb pain as well as knock me out for several hours at a time. While it was effective in doing both, it left me feeling like I was in some strange dream for the duration of the entire trip.
Only one thing kept me grounded as I woke with a heavy and dizzying sensation and that was Jasper. Every time I woke up, he was there, holding my hand and ready with the stunning smile that I had fallen in love with.
My first time waking up in the city was a frightening one. I was already in a hospital, and there were several healers surrounding me in sterile white robes. I felt extremely wary of them at first, but I was finally able to convince myself that they were only trying to help me.
The days stretched into weeks as my days were filled with thorough exams. They were able to confirm that it was my magic that was draining my physical body, which we had deduced long ago, but at least now we knew for sure.
It had taken days of tests but finally, they were able to start treatments, which was a whole other ordeal. The top healers came into my room to poke and prod at me before handing me a potion or attempting a spell.
Many of these treatments left me feeling exhausted, or extremely wired. One potion gave me a piercing headache that took almost a whole day to subside, even with the painkillers the hospital provided me with.
Before I knew it, we had been in Celestial City for over three weeks.
“I’m so sick of this,” I complained to Jasper, slamming my hands down on the bed sheets. “I’m feeling a lot better now. Can’t we just leave?”
Jasper sighed deeply and adjusted himself on my bed so he could brush some of my bangs away from my face. “I know, love, but we’ve been through this. You’re still not strong enough, and as soon as you think you are, your body starts to weaken again. I hate seeing you this way.”
I looked down at the bed sheets, knowing that he was right.
Myra, the head healer, suddenly walked into the room. She was unlike any head healer I had ever met. All the others I’ve dealt with were at least middle-aged, more often elderly.
Myra was tall and beautiful, with long, thick wavy hair down to her waist. She had the warmest disposition and was probably the reason I hadn’t tried to break out of this damn place yet.
“How are you feeling, Eva dear?” she asked, coming to my side.
“A little better than yesterday,” I replied honestly.
Myra smiled warmly at me. “I’m so glad to hear that,” she said, but then her expression changed, her eyebrows furrowing slightly. “I’d like to discuss what seems to be our only remaining option for you to make a full recovery.”
Jasper and I looked at each other hopefully.
“As you’re well aware, none of our healers have been able to provide a treatment plan for you that shows any sign of long-term success,” Myra went on, and her warm brown eyes were apologetic. “That is why we would like to propose surgically removing the First Witch’s bone that is embedded within you.”
Jasper squeezed my hand. “Is that really possible?” he asked in amazement.
Myra nodded. “It is possible,” she said carefully. “We have some of the best surgeons here in Celestial City. However, I’m afraid I am unable to guarantee that it will work, or honestly, if it is even safe. With that being said, I want you and your family to think it over carefully before deciding.”
I swallowed hard but nodded. “Thank you so much, Myra. I’ll give it some serious thought.”
Jasper and I were silent for several moments after the head healer left. Jasper was now on top of the bed with me so I could sit in his lap with his strong arms wound around me.
“We will meet with Daphne and Rion soon and figure this out together, Eva. Let’s not think about it now.” He was petting my hair gently, and it took me a while to realize I was shaking.
I took a shuddering breath and moved so that I could look up at Jasper. “I’m so sick of being poked and prodded here,” I said seriously, feeling my eyes start to prick, threatening tears. I forced them down. “I just want one normal day together with you and the boys, free from tests and treatments.”
Jasper stroked my cheek with the backs of his long fingers. “I understand,” he murmured. “You deserve to have a day out. I’ll plan a special day out for you and the boys.”
I felt my eyes light up, excitement flowing through me. “Can we go soon?” I asked, grinning up at him.
He pressed a kiss to my forehead. “As soon as I work things out with the healers.”
I threw my arms around his neck, holding him close.
Despite everything, I really was a lucky woman.

The healers were extremely hesitant to let me out of the infirmary, even for just one measly day, but they eventually relented when Jasper assured them that he would personally see to it that I wasn’t overexerting myself and that I would rest often throughout the day.
Jasper planned a full day for us that began just after dawn. He told me with a fond chuckle that both boys were up well before dawn, just overflowing with excitement. My heart warmed by how much Jasper loved my boys already.
Despite the fact that I had come to think of it as something of a prison, Celestial City was a stunningly gorgeous place. We took the boys sightseeing to the towering crystalline cathedrals, the opulent gardens, and the busting magical marketplaces that were overflowing with potions, artifacts, and spell books.
The boys were completely enthralled by all the dazzling sights and sounds. I loved watching Jasper with them. He was so gentle and attentive. My heart burned when he picked one of my sons up.
Tarik was particularly clingy toward Jasper, always wanting to hold his hand or be settled on his shoulders so he could see something better. Aster seemed to want to impress Jasper in a sweet way, pointing out some monument or other interesting sight so he could be the first to show the man.
As we were making our way through the marketplace, Aster, who was holding onto my hand, tugged on my skirt and pointed toward a crowd that was forming. We could hear laughter and cheering, so we decided to check it out.
A wizard in a dark blue robe stood in the middle of the ring of people that had formed. I attempted to lift Tarik so that he could see better, but Jasper shook his head firmly and took Tarik from me, easily holding the little boy despite the fact that he already had Aster on top of his shoulders.
The wizard was extremely skilled and impressive, conjuring illusions of different animals. The boys giggled and clapped the entire time, and I found myself mainly watching them instead of the street performer. Their eyes sparkled as they gripped Jasper tightly.
“Mama, did you see that? Did you see what the wizard did?”
I giggled, unable to believe that I was really able to enjoy such a magical day with my sons and the love of my life. “I saw!” I told the boys.
“That was amazing!” Aster was enthused as the show ended and the crowd began to disperse.
Jasper chuckled and set Tarik down before doing the same to Aster, removing my eldest from his shoulders. “I think you’ll be an even more powerful magic wielder than that guy,” he told Aster with a wink.
Aster’s large eyes sparkled. “You really think so?” he asked in a hopeful voice.
Jasper nodded firmly. “I doubt that that man was able to save his mama using strong magic. I know that you’re going to be extremely powerful in no time.”
My heart soared at the look of confidence that passed over my son’s face.
“What about me?” Tarik asked, shooting his gray eyes up to look at Jasper.
Jasper laughed and tousled Tarik’s dark hair. “Of course. You’re already very strong, Tarik.”
Tarik looked at Aster, and the two grinned widely at one another.
After a simple lunch at a cute little cafe, we decided to take the boys to the heart of the city. We watched from a nearby bench as the boys ran around the large, undulating fountain in the center of the plaza.
They were playing some form of tag, but they were incorporating some role-play into the classic game as well. Clearly inspired by the street-performing wizard from earlier in the day, Aster declared loudly that he was going to be a powerful sorcerer and that his younger brother was his apprentice. Aster was guiding his younger brother through a series of training sessions and somehow switching between playing tag and practicing their moves in between.
I couldn’t remember the last time I felt this elated. My boys were happy and thriving, and I had Jasper by my side.
This was exactly what I needed and somehow, I had completely forgotten about all the terror and fear that had led up to this peaceful moment.
Jasper had one arm around my waist as I leaned back against his chest. I shut my eyes, relishing the time we had together.
Jasper suddenly set his chin on my shoulder so he could kiss my cheek. “We really feel like a normal little family today, don’t we?”
I giggled and turned in his arms so I could press my lips to his. “Today has been amazing,” I told him honestly, hoping he could hear in my voice just how much it has meant to me. “But I’m not sure if I would ever want to be a normal family.”
Jasper’s laughter shook my body, and the sensation was electric. “I suppose I wouldn’t either,” he said, and his voice dropped, causing his tone to become serious. “But I am so grateful to be a part of your family, and I hope that I always will be.”
I tilted my head at him with amusement. “You already are, and I know for a fact that you always will be.”
He patted my hip, and I stood up to allow him to stand as well. He looked at me with such intensity in his eyes that it nearly took my breath away. I nearly choked on a gasp when he lowered himself to one knee and extracted a tiny velvet box from his pocket.
“I always want to be a part of your family, Eva,” he repeated, opening the little box. “Would you do me the honor of always being a part of mine?”
In answer, I leaped at him, locking my arms around his neck and crushing my lips to his in a sealing kiss.
