Chapter 1213: Chapter 124 : A Mesmerizing Plan
*Eva*
“Why are they just letting Varge’s men in?” I muttered to myself, seeing Alpha Oliver open the gates. What the hell was going on?
“They are mesmerized,” Aster said. He peered over the hallway railing at the Lycaonians flooding into the mansion.
“Mesmerized? What does that mean?” I put my hands on my hips.
“They are following our commands.”
I glanced at Tarik. He stood behind me still.
“Your commands? What are you two talking about?” I looked between them. Their eyes were distant, and I couldn’t tell what they were thinking. Had they done something?
“When we healed Alpha Oliver and his men, we whispered loyalty commands to them and the warriors from Thorn Forest. They are mesmerized by what we said.”
I gaped at my son. My heart pounded steadily in my chest and for the moment, I was at a complete loss for words. What had they done!?
“You did this? Don’t you know what you’ve done?”
Varge wouldn’t orchestrate this whole infiltration just to let my boys escape again. My stomach sank. Or had he ever let them escape at all?
“I thought I told you not to listen to Varge. He’s a very bad man.”
It didn’t seem like they wanted to be cruel or that they meant to harm anyone. Seeing their soft faces and thinking of the monster Varge was, I couldn’t blame them. They thought I was dead. He had groomed them, molded them, and they didn’t know what to think anymore.
“Did you not mesmerize me?”
Aster shrugged again. “It didn’t work on you or Uncle Rion.”
I licked my lips and took an unconscious step back. It terrified me to see my own sons talk about stripping others of their free will so casually. No one had taught them right from wrong. This was normal for them.
The fact that they had the power to do it at all was concerning. We had thought their powers were for physical strength and healing. But if they could manipulate a whole company of strong warriors....
“Okay, Aster, Tarik, how do we undo this? I want to un-mesmerize all those people down there.”
“But it took a long time to mesmerize them all,” Tarik said.
I crossed my arms and gave him my best “disapproving mother” look. I was a little out of practice, but they both leaned away. Apparently, I still had it.
“How do we break the mesmerizing?”
“Tarik and I can do it.” Aster put his arm around his younger brother. “We just need to touch them and whisper new words. It will break the spell.”
I chewed the inside of my cheek and glanced over the railing. The house was completely overrun with Lycaonians. I wanted to find Daphne and Rion, alert them to what was happening. Rion was in his right mind, according to my sons, but was Daphne?
“That will take too long. We need a better solution now, one that will affect everyone.”
“If our powers are cut off from them, it will break the spell,” Tarik offered.
“Okay... that’s something.”
I wondered how I could cut both my sons off from all Alpha Oliver’s men and the Thorn Forest warriors at once. I didn’t have enough power to do that. Sighing, I leaned against the banister. Maybe I did have that strength once, but I’d been using so much magic lately.
It was possible to use a device to cut their powers off.
“That’s it!” I snapped my fingers.
Ayla and Selene had dampening charms. I could put them on the boys for now. Clearly, Aster and Tarik were more of a threat than the twins, and the charms could break the mesmerizing spell.
I should have asked Rion to bring dampening charms along for them in the first place. I didn’t want to believe that my sons were capable of anything bad, so it didn’t even cross my mind.
“Alright, you two, come with me.” I grabbed their hands and led them down the hall to a back room.
There was a large walk-in closet I doubted anyone could care to search. This was the farthest room from where Daphne, Rion, and the twins were. I imagined that was where all the action was.
“Stay here until I come and get you, okay?”
“Mom!” Aster looked scared.
“I don’t want to stay,” Tarik added.
I knelt in front of them and touched their cheeks. “My brave, brave sons. I know we have a lot of catching up to do. Listen to me. I promise I won’t let anything happen to you, okay?”
“But—”
I shook my head. “You’ll be safe here. Stay in this closet until I come back for you. We’ll set this right and stop Varge once and for all.”
Aster sighed heavily and bowed his head. “We’re sorry we let you down.”
My heart trembled and tears sprang to my eyes. I pulled them both into a hug.
“You didn’t let me down. I don’t know what that man did to you, but I’m never going to let him touch you again. Don’t worry about anything. Let me handle it, okay?”
I gave them each a kiss on the cheek and backed out of the closet. I waved once to them and shut the door behind me. It was hard to leave them there alone. It went against everything in my being to take my eyes off of my sons, but I had to get those dampening charms.
It was the only way to stop this madness.
I rushed out of the room and back down the hall. The twins would still be in their nursery, and I could get the charms before anyone even noticed...
I stopped dead. Varge’s voice emanated from just around the corner, right outside the twins’ room.
“You did very well, my dear. Soon, you’ll be rewarded by the power of the Dark Lord.”
I held my breath and glanced around the corner.
Varge stood there with Daphne and Thorn Forest warriors. I saw some of Varge’s followers, too. They were all standing around someone’s limp body on the floor.
“No!” I gasped. I covered my mouth quickly and ducked back around the corner.
They had Rion unconscious on the floor. Daphne just stood there, gazing at Varge with blank submission.
My vision blurred at the corners, and I breathed heavily. Rion and I were the only ones free of this magic, and he was unconscious in enemy hands. I had to get those charms and break the spell. There was no way I could stop Varge and all his loyal followers alone.
I pressed myself to the wall and listened to their conversation. The moment they were out of the way, I had to get those charms. I couldn’t risk them seeing me beforehand.
As much as I wanted to rush in there, knock the snot out of Varge, and carry Rion off, I needed to be smart about this.
“I’ll admit, I’m a little disappointed that the mesmerizing magic didn’t work on Rion.” Varge’s heavy sigh was met with silence.
It seemed like the mind control limited how his puppets could react or respond. Maybe that was an advantage. If they were slow and their faculties limited, they wouldn’t be much of a threat, just a hinderance.
“Oh, well. Let’s get him to the dungeons. I want to have a private chat with him. It’s been so many years and I’m sure there is plenty he needs to... show me.”
I shuddered at the slick glee in Varge’s voice. From the sound of it, he wouldn’t be talking to Rion at all. He just wanted to know what his experiments accomplished.
Rion was in serious trouble.
I peeked around the corner again and saw the Thorn Forest warriors picking Rion up. His head flopped back, and I noticed he had one eye open. For a moment, our gazes met and his eye flashed. Then he closed his eyes.
‘Eva.’
The mind-link opened between us and I felt his determination. Rion was on his own mission. I needed to stick to mine.
‘What are you doing?’ I snapped through the link.
‘Don’t worry about me, Eva. I have a plan.’
‘What plan?’
‘I said don’t worry about it! Daphne is acting weird. I want you to keep an eye on her.’
‘I know, she’s under a spell. Mesmerizing magic. It makes people suggestible to commands.’
‘How...?’
‘Aster and Tarik. I don’t think they knew what they were doing...’ I held my breath, hoping Rion wasn’t about to condemn my sons for their actions.
‘I want you to stay close to Daphne and the twins. The moment there’s an opportunity, you need to escape with them.’
‘Rion, what are you going to do?’
“Just take the opportunity when you have it. Don’t worry about the guards holding me, I can handle them.’
“I don’t like the sound of this. It’s too dangerous. You’ll get yourself killed.’
‘Please, Eva, they are my family. I need to know they will be safe.’
I sighed and nodded, even though he couldn’t see me. ‘I will take care of them.’
‘Thank you.’
‘Rion... I need you to know where my sons are.’ I told him where they were hiding and my plan to get the dampening charms for them. ‘According to them, it’ll break the spell. At least, it will solve the immediate problem and we’ll have a better chance. You shouldn’t do anything rash before then.’
‘Alright, deal.’
I watched as the warriors hauled Rion away. They jostled him around and his head lolled all over the place. I bit my tongue when it nearly collided with the stairs. Varge didn’t seem to care what happened to Rion at all.
I hid behind the corner again and listened to the creaking stairs as everyone left. As soon as the hall was empty, I could rush to the twins and get the charms. Hopefully, I could have them on my sons and break the spell before Varge knew what hit him.
The stairs stopped creaking and I heard footsteps on the first floor.
“Alright, Eva, you can do this,” I whispered to myself.
I turned the corner and nearly collided with Varge’s chest. I threw my palms up and pushed myself back, my stomach twisting and rolling at being so close to him. The stench of sweat and rot clung to his skin.
“Well, well, well, what’s this?” Varge asked. He leered in front of me, smiling a sickening grin. His eyes gleamed and he chuckled darkly. “I only hoped I’d encounter you.”
I clenched my fists. My blood boiled and every bone in my body trembled. I wanted to jump on him and tear his face off.
But I knew I had to keep my cool if I wanted to protect my family. So, I took a deep breath and met his gaze.
"Get out of my way, Varge," I said through gritted teeth.
He laughed. "Or what? You’ll stop me?"
My magic flickered in my palms, ready to strike. But before I could attack, Varge grabbed my wrist in an iron grip. I cried out as pain shot up my arm.
"You’re powerless against me now," he sneered, twisting my arm harder.
