Chapter 1212: Chapter 123 : Empty Eyes

*Rion*

Every nerve in my body seemed to be screaming out with rage and grief. I had known in my heart that my mother had died a terrible death, but I couldn’t have imagined what Daphne was telling me. As she spoke, flashes of my memory were appearing in my mind.

They weren’t painful this time, just jarring as I saw my sister’s toddler face in my head, her large eyes filled with tears as she gripped me. That was quickly followed by the terrified but beautiful face of my mother as she yelled something at me.

I knew now that she had been telling me to take Eva and run.

“What are we going to do?” I whispered, looking down and feeling completely lost.

Daphne wasn’t doing much better. My heart broke for her. Her ability, although extremely powerful, was a curse of sorts. She had seen my dreams and now she was suffering because of them. Her thin arms were wrapped around her as if she was trying to shield herself from the pain that was stirring inside of her.

I reached out to her and took her in my arms, tucking her against my chest. I stroked her hair gently, frowning with concern as I realized that she was trembling like a baby bird.

“We’re going to figure this out, Daphne,” I promised her, although I was trying to convince myself of that as well.

I couldn’t fall apart now. Daphne was depending on me. Our family was depending on me. We finally had our nephews back and our daughters were safe. I had to stay vigilant if we were going to keep that status.

Daphne pulled away from me slightly so she could look up at me with her tear-stained cheeks. I smiled gently at her and wiped the wet trails away with the pads of my thumbs, enjoying the feel of her warm skin beneath my fingertips.

“I’m going to protect you, Daphne,” I told her with as much conviction as I could muster. “You and our daughters are my entire world. Nothing is going to keep me from keeping you all safe.”

Daphne smiled shakily up at me and as I pulled her in for a sweet kiss, I knew that I didn’t need all my memories to love this woman. She constantly shocked me with her compassion and her strength, despite all the constant trials we tended to be faced with.

I was even further impressed as we pulled away and I saw that Daphne had a determined look on her face. She had seemed lost and despairing just a moment earlier and now she had put on a brave face that I couldn’t help but notice was completely radiant.

She was a beautiful leader, a true queen.

“I think I know how we can get some insight,” she told me. She took in a shuddering breath to steady herself. “My father and my uncles are Dark Lords themselves. Perhaps we should contact them.”

Before I could answer, a cacophony of ear-splitting screams pierced through the silence in the room. Daphne and I gave each other wide-eyed looks of alarm before we both rushed to the window, pushing the drapes apart to look out.

Daphne gasped while I cursed at the sight.

There, in the middle of the darkness, standing like a towering shadow over the little community of Drogomor, was Varge. He looked even larger than he had been days earlier, his teeth glimmering in the light of the moon above us.

There was no sign of the damage we had inflicted on him during our battle. In fact, he looked even more powerful, his dark eyes glinting even in the nighttime. He had an ominous glow around him that I feared greatly could be from some dark magic deep down inside of him.

I was very briefly relieved when a horde of Drogomor soldiers seemed to be surrounding the beast, ready to fight him off, but it was immediately apparent that something was horribly wrong. The men weren’t facing him. They were facing away from him in a defensive stance.

They were on Varge’s side. They were protecting him.

But why?

I didn’t have time to wonder that for very long. My eyes widened in disbelief when I caught sight of Alpha Oliver throwing the gates open to allow the monster entry into the pack community. Varge took full advantage and started heading straight for us at full speed.

We had to get out of here.

I had to get my family to safety, now.

“Let’s go, Daphne!” I shouted, grabbing her hand and yanking her toward the bedroom door.

I looked back when I realized Daphne wasn’t making any moves to follow me. She was staring straight ahead with an almost confused expression on her face. She looked completely relaxed.

“What are you doing, Daphne?” I demanded, giving her another yank. “Hurry! We need to get to safety before Varge gets here. We have to get the girls and go! Now!”

Daphne’s eyes snapped to mine and her eyebrows furrowed. “Varge?”

I could hear the screams outside getting louder. I stared at Daphne, wondering if she was going into shock. “Yes! We need to go. Now!”

Daphne’s eyes rounded and she shook her head slowly. “But we’re safe here,” she said in a flat voice. “We don’t have to go anywhere. Varge is going to protect us all.”

“Daphne?” I asked in shock. I looked closer at her and realized she looked strange. There was something off about her eyes. They weren’t quite their normal hazel color. They were darker and emptier.

“Daphne, snap out of it—” I started to say, but then a crash sounded from downstairs.

I grabbed Daphne’s hand and roughly pulled her out of the room. She didn’t fight me. We ran to the top of the stairs just in time to see guards bursting through the front door.

Relief flooded me and I started to rush down to meet them so I could start barking orders, but then I got a good look at their empty faces. I stepped back, shielding Daphne as best as I could with my body.

“Hand over the Luna and the girls,” shouted the largest man who appeared to be the leader.

Fear gripped me as I imagined these men taking Daphne and our daughters. There was no doubt in my mind that they were working for Varge now.

They would have to take them over my cold, still body.

“Never,” I snarled, taking a protective stance in front of my wife. I glanced over my shoulder at her. “Daphne, go into the girls’ room and stay there!”

Daphne didn’t move, and I cursed under my breath as the guards started toward us purposefully, surrounding the bottom of the stairs.

I growled low before I felt my entire body trembling with anger. I wasn’t going to let them lay a single hand on my family. I had already allowed them to kidnap my daughters once in the past. That was one too many times.

I shut my eyes for a moment, relishing in the unyielding strength and power that coursed through my veins as I shifted into my wolf form. My wolf had been practically dying for some action ever since I learned about the death of my mother. Now, it was time to let him wreak havoc upon the sorry bastards in front of us.

The guards were clearly under some kind of mind trick. They weren’t even fazed by my huge, intimidating form. They didn’t even flinch as I jumped down from the top of the stairs and landed in front of them in a single bound.

The couple of guards closest to me threw themselves at me, yielding long blades that I neatly dodged. I swiped at the men with my massive paws, easily taking them out. I snarled each time one of them got close to the stairs, knowing full well that my children were tucked up safely in their little beds. I glanced briefly behind me, relieved to see that Daphne was still standing at the top of the steps, safe and sound.

I used that knowledge to drive me forward as I continued to bite and claw at our enemies. The guards were fighting very robotically, but they seemed to have obtained almost supernatural strength. They kept coming at me again and again, even after I had taken them out.

I growled sharply as I was suddenly faced with half a dozen guards, none of them looking the least bit tired despite the fact we had fought various rounds.

This wasn’t good. I was beginning to slow down slightly. The guards seemed to keep coming and none of them were tiring in the slightest. I heard a whistling sound behind me but wasn’t fast enough to dodge the large net that landed on top of me.

I roared and thrashed, but the guards each had a corner of the thick net and were holding it down over me. My paws were completely tangled, making it impossible to move.

I looked up with difficulty when I heard a deep chuckle above me. A growl burst from my mouth when I saw that it was Varge standing over me, Alpha Oliver just a couple steps behind him.

“I warned you that I would have my revenge, Stormfall,” he spat, smiling down at me wickedly. “Did you really think that I was going to just let you take Aster and Tarik away just like that? Those boys are my life’s work. They are coming back with me, and so are your little daughters.”

I saw red tint my vision and I started to thrash once again, growling viciously, my mouth watering as it longed to spill the bastard’s blood onto the floor.

Varge just watched me with a smug grin on his face. He suddenly looked over me toward the stairs and clapped his hands. “Ahh, Daphne. I’m glad that we are finally able to meet.”

‘No!’ I screamed in my head. ‘Don’t touch her!’

Daphne appeared in my vision then, standing way too close to Varge. I barked sharply at her, trying to warn her to step away, but she didn’t seem to even notice me.

I saw red again when Varge reached out and caressed my wife’s cheek with his grimy fingers. I started to thrash around again, desperate to tear the man limb by limb and make him beg for death.

“Bring me your daughters, Daphne,” Varge ordered in a low voice.

Daphne froze for a moment before she turned robotically and headed toward the stairs.

I made as much noise as I could, trying to get her to at least look at me, hoping that if she did, I could snap her out of whatever trance she was clearly in.

All I could do was watch as Daphne obeyed the bastard, disappearing up the stairs while I was dragged away by the guards.
