Chapter 1199: Chapter 110 : Our True Origins
*Eva*
It finally seemed like things were calming down around Thorn Forest. Thanks to Gareth’s followers who decided to turn over a new leaf and join our pack, we had grown in numbers, our population increasing by almost fifty percent.
I never imagined myself having such a quaint life. Jasper and I had a sizeable but still modest home just down the road from Rion and Daphne. It made it convenient to visit my nieces since I was very much involved in their upbringing.
I saw so much of myself in those little girls. They were determined little things, and I knew that they were going to be extremely powerful, possibly even more so than myself. They were learning and growing so quickly. I couldn’t be prouder of them.
Jasper squeezed me affectionately. “You seem lost in thought,” he said in a low, curious voice. “What’s on your mind?”
A small smile crept onto my lips as I leaned back against Jasper’s chest. He had his strong arms wound around my waist.
We were in a little field that was still in view of our house. We had laid out a thick picnic blanket and were enjoying some fruit and crackers as we watched the sun begin to set.
I giggled, amused by the complete turn my life had taken over the past year. It didn’t feel like it was that long ago when I was completely obsessed with getting revenge for my boys, and for the woman that I thought I should have been.
Back then, I wouldn’t have hesitated to murder anyone who got in the way of my endeavors. I wouldn’t have settled for anything less than the extravagant throne and marble lairs that I surrounded myself with before I was reunited with Rion.
“I just can’t believe that I’m sitting on a picnic blanket watching the sunset,” I said with another giggle. I tilted my head so I could look up at Jasper’s face. “My life really has changed.”
He lowered his head to kiss my cheek.
I smiled, my face heating up as I shifted to face the slowly setting sun once again, the orange and pink that swirled in the sky making me feel warm in the best way.
No one made me feel warmer than Jasper. All he had to do was look at me and my heart was racing a thousand miles a minute. I cursed the fact that my face colored so easily. I couldn’t hide my embarrassment from him even if I wanted to, though he claimed that I was adorable when I blushed.
I nearly gagged each time he said that though, much to his further amusement.
We both looked up when we heard footsteps approaching. I felt my eyebrows raise in surprise as we watched Rion and Daphne approach. Something about the way that they were coming toward us in urgent strides gave me the impression that this was not a casual visit.
Jasper and I stood up, questioning looks all over our faces as my brother and Daphne stopped in front of us. My eyes flew to the large envelope that Daphne had tucked under her arm.
“What is it this time?” Jasper asked warily, his eyes on Rion.
Rion didn’t answer but gave his best friend a grave look before his eyes dropped to mine.
It was then that I realized that Daphne was looking at me too, her hazel eyes just as serious as my brother’s.
“You might as well get it over with,” I said good-naturedly, even though my heart was already pounding ferociously in my chest. “You guys are freaking me out. You look like someone died.”
I didn’t do well when it came to the emotional aspect of things. When faced with something stressful or traumatic, I often let my anger control me.
Rion and Daphne glanced at each other, and Rion nodded very slightly to her.
Daphne stepped toward us and held the envelope out toward me. She hesitated for a moment before she pressed her lips together tightly. “I just want you to know that no matter what, we’re here for you.”
I rolled my eyes at her but took the envelope with shaking hands. “I know that,” I snapped lightly. I smirked at her. “I wouldn’t still be here if that wasn’t the case.”
Everyone seemed to be holding their breath as I opened the unassuming envelope and reached inside.
My hands shook as I stared down at the photograph in my hands. Although it had been two years since I’d seen their sweet faces, there was no doubt in my mind that these boys were mine. The picture wasn’t even the best quality, slightly blurry, but I could still make out their expressive round eyes that were so much like my own.
I sucked in a sharp breath and sank to my knees, hearing their little giggles in my mind as I stared down at their faces.
“They’re alive?” I finally said, my voice breaking toward the end. An amazed smile spread out across my face, tears burning my eyes. “You really found them?”
My head snapped up and I looked between Rion and Daphne, hope springing into my chest as I clutched the picture of my angels close to me.
It was immediately stamped down when I realized that they still looked serious, their lips turned down. I reached for Jasper, who sank down beside me and wrapped his arms around me.
“Where are they?” I asked shakily.
“There’s another picture,” Rion said.
I reached into the envelope and pulled out another photograph. This time, it was of a grave-looking man. It didn’t even take me a full second to realize who it was. A hiss flew from between my lips as hatred and rage bubbled up inside of me.
“What is it?” Jasper asked in alarm, his arms tightening around me. “Eva, love? Who is that man? Do you know him?”
It took me a moment to reign in my anger enough to be able to answer him. “Priest Varge,” I spat between my teeth. “He was a member of the Gibbous Pack years ago. He was the one behind my abduction and who sold me to that wretched Alpha. What the hell is that fucking bastard doing with my babies?”
Jasper rubbed my arms soothingly, but it did very little to calm me as a bunch of worst-case scenarios flitted through my mind at an alarming rate. I looked up at my brother. “Where are they? Are they alright?”
I shuddered, realizing that the answer could be far from ideal.
Rion’s expression darkened. “Priest Varge is believed to be the leader of the Lycaon faction,” he said, his voice heavy with devastation. “From what we could gather, it sounds as if he plans to make your sons into his successors.”
“Like hell, he will!” I screeched shrilly, jumping up to my feet.
Daphne and Rion stepped forward with their arms out toward me as if they were planning to restrain me. I nearly hissed at them, wordlessly daring them to try it. I obviously wouldn’t have harmed them, but I would have paralyzed them temporarily if they dared to get in the way of me finding my sons.
Jasper grasped my shoulders, and I looked into his deep light brown eyes. I calmed just slightly at his desperate expression. I shook my head hard. I needed to go save my sons, but if I acted too rashly, they could be harmed in the process of me rescuing them.
Once I had calmed down, Rion and Daphne started to explain everything that they knew about the boys and their location. I listened intently. They were far away, just east of New Dianny in a forest known as the Southern Jungle.
They were far, but not too far for me to get to them. It would be over a day’s travel. We would need to go immediately.
“Wherever they are being kept will obviously be heavily guarded,” Rion went on, giving me a pointed look that was full of warning.
I just scowled at him. “That’s why we need to go immediately,” I countered. “We need to scout it out so we can figure out what resources we’ll need.”
I was trying to be persuasive, but I knew in my heart that as soon as I learned where my sons were being kept, I would burst in with nothing but the magic flowing through my veins to unleash on any sorry soul that got in my way.
“We will, Eva. Don’t worry,” Rion said in a gentle voice that did absolutely nothing to soothe me.
“There have been reports claiming that your boys are extremely strong and heal quickly,” Daphne added. Her lips thinned. “There’s a good chance that the plague didn’t affect them at all.”
I looked down, processing this. I still couldn’t believe that my babies were alive. But that did explain why even after grieving for years, I still thought about them and saw them in my dreams. I had just assumed that that was because I missed them so much, but I knew the truth now.
We were still connected because they were still alive.
“Priest Varge might have known of their true origins and abducted them during the outbreak,” Rion pointed out. “That way, he could get away with it by claiming they had passed away.”
I felt my blood start to burn beneath my skin at the mention of the vile man. I forced it to simmer down. “Do you think that this man could be our father?” I asked Rion, unable to say the bastard’s name.
To my great relief, Rion shook his head in the negative. “I have definitely seen him before, but I only have extremely hazy memories of him, if you could even call them memories. I just have glimpses of his face in my mind.”
That made things a little less complicated. If I were to kill him, I would have absolutely no regrets doing it. Although, even if the man was our father, I could probably easily end his life if it was to save my sons.
“I want to go after this man and end him,” I admitted in a low, deadly voice.
I watched Daphne’s eyes round at the malice that dripped from my words.
I let out a long, frustrated breath. “But unfortunately, he will have answers that will be vital for us, so he will need to be captured alive.”
I said alive, but that didn’t necessarily mean unharmed. Even if I couldn’t use my full powers, I could still hurt him.
I turned to my sister-in-law, who was watching me with concern in her large eyes. “How do you think we should proceed?”
Since meeting her, I have come to really respect Daphne. She was resourceful and a good leader. I valued her input and trusted her to make a decision that would benefit everyone, at least to the best of her ability.
I was extremely fortunate that she was my sister now.
Daphne looked down, considering this before she looked up at me, her eyes shining with determination. “I think we should inform my parents of what is going on and what we’ve found out so far. With all that could be about to transpire, we could use all the support we can get.”
