Chapter 1198: Chapter 109 : The Right to Know
*Daphne*
I watched Rion’s face carefully as I told him what we knew so far about the Lycaon leader. I was worried about how he might react, but I was also relieved that I was finally able to fill him in.
It had been a frightening experience to find all this information out and not be able to lean on Rion for support and guidance.
Rion looked murderous as soon as I mentioned the Lycaon name. He was understandably furious because they had been responsible for Eva’s traumatic past and for the near kidnapping of our daughters. I felt a surge of anger as well whenever I thought about the dangerous faction.
“These children...” Rion said, his voice low and trailing off as he stared in shock down at the picture of the boys.
I took his hand. “We haven’t been able to confirm their identity,” I told him carefully. “But what we do know is that they seem to be impervious to illnesses and heal at an accelerated rate.”
Rion sucked in a breath at that, his wide eyes locking with mine.
“We were able to uncover the leader’s name,” Kai said suddenly, causing both Rion and me to look over at him. He looked grave, his dark eyes almost black as he continued. “He is known as Priest Willem Varge.”
I looked down, digesting this. I felt Rion stiffen next to me, although his face didn’t seem to show any recognition.
“That is the name he goes by, but we are uncertain if that is an alias or not,” Kai went on. “He is believed to have a base of operations in the Southern Jungle, a forest that is located east of New Dianny.”
It felt as if Rion was getting tenser by the second, as if he was about to jump up right then to head to this Southern Jungle. I grabbed his hand, squeezing it tightly, needing the support and his rock-solid presence.
Rion squeezed my hand back, his other hand clutching the photographs just as tightly. I thought I noticed his hands shaking slightly. “How were you able to obtain these photos?” he asked Kai, his voice low and slightly strained.
I winced at Rion’s tone. Perhaps he needed the support just as much as I did. I put a hand up to his shoulder so that I could rub it soothingly.
Kai straightened slightly at the question. “We make it a point to have contacts all over,” he informed us. “And that includes New Dianny. Our contact there was able to track the extremist’s movements. It wasn’t until we followed them when they traveled across the southern pass that we were able to collect more vital information.”
Rion’s hands started shaking again. I glanced up to see that his expression was livid. He looked over at me and we shared a dark, knowing look. We knew what that meant. That had to have been the night that the extremists attempted to kidnap Ayla and Selene.
“Our men reported suspicious activity that led them to believe that the faction has access to dark magic as well,” Kai said in a grim voice. Then, he sounded regretful. “Although we were unable to get a grasp on just how much, or how powerful they are.”
Rion and I shared yet another dark look, although this one was much more resigned than the last. It was unsurprising that the group had dark magic at their disposal considering what they had done to Eva, and that they had been after our girls specifically.
“Thank you for all the vital information that you’ve uncovered so far,” Rion said to Kai. “I’m afraid that we’re going to have to ask you to find out even more, however.”
Kai’s expression darkened with determination. “Of course, Alpha,” he said with a sharp nod. “We are eager to aid in putting an end to this dangerous threat as well.”
“Thank you,” I added. “You’ve been such a huge help so far.”
Kai’s expression softened ever-so-slightly as he gave me a nod of acknowledgment. He turned to Rion then and squared his shoulders. “We will gather all the information possible,” he said firmly.
“Focus on this Priest guy,” Rion said in a no-nonsense tone, “particularly anything you can find out concerning his origin, any former pack or family information you can uncover.”
“Yes, sir,” Kai said.
I felt myself relaxing slightly, despite the seriousness of the situation. It felt like I had spent so long trying to handle all of this on my own. It was a great relief to have Rion filled in and able to aid me in the decision-making process.
It wasn’t that I thought I couldn’t handle it all on my own. I definitely could have, but I hated that it felt like I had to over the past few weeks. Rion and I were a team. It wasn’t just my family and my pack in danger. It was his too.
“I’m sure you were planning on it anyway,” Rion went on, a steely edge to his voice. “But I would like to insist that you report only to either myself or Luna Daphne concerning anything you are able to uncover.”
Kai was quick to agree. “Of course,” he said, firming up his voice so we were assured of his seriousness.
We thanked Kai again before we walked him out of our office and to the front door. Once we were alone, I turned to look up at Rion.
I knew I had no reason to, but I felt guilty for keeping something this big from him. I had known it was the right thing to do, but it still felt wrong and unnatural to do so.
“I’m sorry for having to keep all of this from you for so long,” I said, reaching down to grasp his hand in mine.
Rion’s face was full of tension, but he offered me a small smile. “I understand why you did, even if I don’t like it,” he admitted finally. He set his free hand against my cheek, caressing my quickly heating up skin with the pad of his thumb. “I’m sorry that you felt like you had to go through all of that alone.”
“It wasn’t too bad,” I said modestly, though it had been one of the hardest things I had to do.
Lately, I hated any kind of rift between us. I was extremely sensitive ever since Rion had lost his memories.
My eyebrows raised in surprise when Rion’s expression was suddenly fierce. He gritted his teeth and nearly growled. “Well, it was hell for me,” he said, his hand pulling away from mine so it could wound around my waist. He pulled me close to his body. “I could tell that something was seriously wrong with you, but I didn’t know what. And it felt like I couldn’t do anything about it.”
I felt my face flush with embarrassment. I thought I was being so sneaky, but it turned out that Rion had noticed all along that something wasn’t right. My plan had failed. I wanted to keep this from him so that he wouldn’t overreact before we had all the answers, but also to keep him from worrying.
Rion held me close, and I could feel the desperation seeping out of his body as he pressed his face against my hair. “I might not remember everything,” he admitted in a low voice. “But even if my mind doesn’t remember certain things, my body sure does. I need to be close to you, Daphne, in every way. I don’t want any distance between us.”
“I want to be close too,” I said, my voice breaking toward the end.
We stayed that way for several beautiful moments, just relishing in the warmth of one another. I pressed my cheek against Rion’s chest, loving the feel of his heart beating steadily beneath his shirt. I wrapped my arms around his back, wishing I could get even closer somehow.
It couldn’t last forever. We had just learned some vital information, and there was much to be done. I could tell Rion was realizing this as well. I could feel reluctance pouring out of him as he gently pulled away from me.
“That man in the photo...” he said, his voice trailing off.
“Priest Willem Varge,” I said, not really to supply the name to him but more just for me to digest the possible alias of our enemy.
Rion scowled, starting to shake with rage again. “His fucking name doesn’t matter,” he spat, malice dripping from his voice. He took a calming breath before looking me in the eye. “The picture was familiar to me somehow. I think I know him from somewhere, from my past.”
I sucked in a breath. It was what I had been afraid of. I waited for Rion to say more, hoping that what I had feared wasn’t true.
“I can’t really say anything else with much certainty,” Rion said, his shoulders slumping slightly but he was still extremely rigid with tension. “I just get the feeling that I’ve seen him before, but the images in my head are all fuzzy and hazy.”
I looked down at the floor, digesting this information. I could continue to hope that this man wasn’t at all related to Rion and Eva, but I couldn’t shake the reminder that there was some resemblance in their faces. I could only hope that it was just the fear putting those similarities in my mind.
“Do you think you should tell Eva about everything we’ve learned?” I asked, not raising my eyes. I felt my lower lip slip between my teeth at the thought of Eva’s expression if we were to tell her what the informant told us.
I was completely unsurprised by Rion’s answer, especially when I was brave enough to look into his eyes to see the grim determination that had settled in his gray orbs. “We have to.”
Panic settled in as I processed the grave finality behind Rion’s words. He sounded as if he was planning to leave immediately to break the news to Eva. “Perhaps we should devise a plan before rushing into things,” I suggested diplomatically.
Rion pursed his lips, his eyes narrowing slightly as he considered my words. “This is urgent, Daphne,” he reminded me needlessly. “We don’t have time to tiptoe around this. Eva needs to know, especially if the boys are hers.”
“I understand that,” I assured him.
How could I not? If it had been us in this situation with our children, I knew in my heart that nothing would be able to keep me from learning the truth. I gripped his hands and looked up, knowing that my eyes were filled with worry and hoping that he could detect that. “I just want to proceed with caution. We just don’t know anything for certain.”
Rion nodded in agreement, his expression softening when he saw the real concern in my eyes. He squeezed my hands reassuringly. “It’s going to be fine, Daphne,” he said in a soothing voice. “Eva can’t use her full powers anymore.”
She looked at me curiously.
“After the fight with Alpha Gareth, the healer warned it would be dangerous for her to use that kind of power anymore. I’ll explain more later. But for now, we’ll be right there to make sure Eva doesn’t do anything rash. These boys could possibly be hers, and she has a right to go after them if that is the case.”
I swallowed hard, only feeling slightly placated. “Eva is the most powerful person I know,” I said, my eyes rounding. “If these are her boys, there’s no telling what she’ll do.”
“I know,” Rion said solemnly. He gripped my hand. “That is why we should go tell her together.”
