Chapter 1179: Chapter 90 : - Unyielding Eyes

*Daphne*

I looked around the walls of the nursery. Rion and I had the walls painted a pale blue color. I had wanted something calming and comforting, mostly for the girls but for me as well.

A few weeks have passed since the wedding. We spent those weeks in marital bliss, Rion and I just enjoying one another. We took just a couple of days to celebrate our union alone, wandering our lands on horseback, falling asleep under the stars, and going swimming. It had been an amazing couple of days.

After returning, life was busy as we continued adjusting to parenthood while leading our pack, but we fell into a routine after a couple of weeks. Rion was continuing his fortification efforts as well as improving many of the buildings in Thorn Forest. I spent a lot of my day with the girls but would leave in order to help with the children at the academy as well.

Despite our busy schedules, we always made sure to spend some time together as a family. It was important to both Rion and me that the girls have quality time with both of their parents.

One of our favorite things to do was take the girls out on picnics. As long as it wasn’t too cold, we liked to bring them out to the edge of the community, to the gorgeous field that was filled with wildflowers. Ayla and Selene loved to wander through the tall grass. It warmed my heart the way Rion always kept a close eye on them, making sure they were always within our sight.

I should have been completely at peace. I had everything I wanted, from the perfect, loving husband to our two beautiful children. Rion and I found an amazing home in Thorn Forest with incredible members who adored us.

I sat on the large pink plush rug in the middle of the nursery, watching Ayla and Selene play. Over the past few weeks, they had grown exponentially, their wavy light brown hair past their little ears. They were walking much more steadily as well, even though they were still unsure on their feet. I knew that children their age shouldn’t be able to walk at all.

Ayla was stacking some blocks into a small tower, Selene watching intently as she did so. Each time Selene reached out to touch one of the blocks though, Ayla would gently and slowly push her younger sister’s hand away, then babble at her as if to say “Not yet, Selene!”

Selene would sit back and wait patiently, large gray eyes scanning the blocks. Ayla would lean back and then they both pushed the blocks over, watching them tumble onto the plush carpet. Then they would squeal with laughter and repeat their game.

I smiled as I watched them. I even had extremely well-behaved babies who slept through the night and hardly cried. I should have been happy.

Their accelerated growth only caused my anxiety to rise, however.

“How are my little nieces doing?”

I turned and smiled at Eva, who tiptoed into the room and sat down beside me, watching the girls continue their game. Ayla stood on slightly wobbly legs and approached her aunt, patting Eva on the cheek once before returning to her spot on the floor with Selene.

“They’re good, still growing at an alarming rate,” I said, hearing the stress in my own voice.

Eva nodded, eyeing the two girls. “They really do seem to be growing every day.”

“What could it mean?” I asked fretfully, a question that I had repeated several times both to her and to Rion.

Eva answered the way she always did, but still in a patient tone. “It has to be due to the blood magic performed on them in their infancy.”

That was the extent of what we could assess. We had nothing else to go by, except for what we knew about Eva and Rion’s childhoods.

As soon as Eva was gone, I got the girls ready and took them to our healer Althea, a kind woman who was probably the same age as Alpha Cyrus. Her short, graying hair was pulled into a tight bun. Her blue eyes crinkled as she smiled at my daughters.

“These two are already so powerful for their age,” she said after their general examination was completed.

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” I told the healer, feeling the grimace spread out over my face.

“Your suspicions are correct, Luna Daphne,” Althea went on, looking into the twins’ identical gray eyes. “The blood ritual is no doubt the cause of the young ones’ accelerated growth, but it will yield some very powerful magic in them that could even exceed their father’s or aunt’s.”

Althea was obviously excited by this fact, but it just filled my stomach with dread.

The old healer watched my face for a moment before reaching for something on a shelf above the twins’ heads. It was a sphere made of glass, but it had some kind of glowing gem in the middle of it. “May I try something with the little ones, Luna Daphne?”

I nodded my consent, watching in growing puzzlement as she handed the orb to Selene, who took it eagerly in her chubby hands. Ayla took it from her with a giggle before chucking it across the room. I gasped and dove for it, suspecting that the orb was likely an expensive piece of equipment, but the orb suddenly froze in mid-air, floating above the wooden floor.

I turned slowly to see Selene’s chubby arm was held out toward the orb.

“Are you doing that?” I asked the healer.

Althea’s eyes were wide as she shook her head.

We continued to watch the girls. Ayla had her arm out as well now and was trying to bring the small glass sphere closer to herself, tugging it away from Selene. Suddenly, Selene let out a frustrated wail, and the orb began to spin.

It flew through the room, causing Althea and I to jump to the side, pressing ourselves against the wall as a gust of wind began to form. Papers and other items flew past us at an alarming rate.

I dashed forward, grabbing my daughters in my arms. They laughed and the wind came to a halt, the items crashing to the floor, including the orb which rolled harmlessly to the side of the room.

“We should probably go,” I said, my voice shaking. I turned to the door, my daughters squealing happily in my arms.

“Luna Daphne!” Althea called out, her eyes wide with excitement but also seriousness. “I must advise you and Alpha Rion to consider helping those two tame their powers. It is the only way to avoid chaos.”

I swallowed but nodded grimly before leaving the old healer alone.

As soon as I got the twins home, I called for an emergency family meeting. My parents traveled to the Light Realm immediately upon getting my distressed letter.

My parents, Eva, Rion, and I were all gathered in our sitting room.

“While Ayla and Selene’s abilities are nothing to fear, that doesn’t mean that measures shouldn’t be taken in order for everyone to remain safe,” Father said once we had explained the situation as best as we could.

“The girls’ safety and well-being come first,” Rion said in a flat tone, his hard jaw and dark gray eyes almost impossible to argue with.

“Of course, Orion,” my mother soothed. “King Xander and I only want what is best for our granddaughters as well.”

I shot Rion a look, which he reacted to by relaxing ever-so-slightly.

After I explained what happened at the healer’s, Rion had been more stressed out than I had been seeing it. I shouldn’t have been shocked. He and Eva were the ones with supernatural abilities. He knew way more than I did in terms of how this would affect our daughters.

“Eva is the only one who can help our daughters understand their powers,” I said to my parents. “What do you think?”

My parents glanced at each other and then at Eva, who kept her head held high, waiting for the verdict. They knew we were asking for the anklet to be removed.

“We are pleased with how Eva Stormfall has conducted herself,” my mother said.

“But not quite enough to remove the dampening anklet,” Father finished.

Rion, Eva, and I all glanced at one another but we weren’t at all surprised by their response. And while Eva badly wished to have the full extent of her powers back, she was grateful not to be imprisoned like she knew many others would have been with her list of crimes.

“Perhaps dampening relics are the answer,” my mother said.

“On the girls?” I asked, my eyes wide with disbelief.

My mother rubbed my arm and I relaxed slightly, not realizing how tense I was. “Just until they are old enough to control their abilities on their own,” she said soothingly.

I nodded slowly. That probably wouldn’t be the worst thing, but I still didn’t like the idea of treating my infant daughters like criminals.

Rion stood up and put his hand out for mine. I took it and he hauled me to my feet. “Thank you for coming all this way,” he said to my parents. “I believe we should put this discussion to rest for today.”

We led my parents to the guest room on the first floor and said good night to Eva, who was also staying the night in one of our other rooms.

Rion had an arm around me and I could tell he was tense. I could feel the muscles in his bicep against the back of my shoulders as we walked into our room.

“We’ll figure this out,” I soothed once he’d shut our bedroom door.

Rion let out a long breath. “I don’t think we should do it.”

I turned to face him. “Do what?” I asked.

“Dampen our daughters’ abilities,” Rion said fiercely, his eyes flashing. “They’re just babies, for crying out loud. They haven’t developed enough to even know the full extent of their powers and they haven’t harmed anyone. We shouldn’t do that to them.”

I felt my face soften. Of course, Rion would feel that way. It was my initial reaction as well. Eva was wearing an anklet as punishment for the crimes she committed. It would pain him to see our daughters have to wear a similar dampening relic.

“I understand your side,” I told him gently. “But you have to admit that this situation is delicate. We could be protecting the girls by controlling their powers for them this way.”

Rion looked away stubbornly. “We’ll find another way. We can protect them just fine on our own.”

I touched his arm, frowning when he flinched at the contact. “Rion, we need to be realistic about this,” I said carefully. “If things got out of hand, it could be harmful to our Ayla and Selene too. We don’t understand their powers.”

Rion shook his head and firmed up his look. “We’re not dampening their powers.”

Frustration started to well up inside of me and I straightened, feeling my temper start to flare up at his unwillingness to even consider the option.

A gentle knock sounded on our door. Rion glanced at me questioningly for a second before opening the door to reveal Eva standing there.

She raised an eyebrow at us. “If you were going to have an argument, perhaps you shouldn’t have put me in the room right beside yours.”

“We weren’t arguing,” Rion said firmly but then shook his head. “What is it, Eva?”

Eva gave us both compassionate looks. She let herself in and Rion shut the door behind her. “I couldn’t help but overhear and just wanted to give my opinion since all I want is the best for my nieces.”

Rion and I nodded to signal her to continue.

“There have been multiple times in my life where I wished for nothing more than to have had some knowledge of my powers and how to use them before they developed,” she said in a low, regretful voice.

I glanced at Rion to find he was looking at his sister with mournful eyes. I know it hurt him to think about all that his baby sister had been through.

“But my power is a part of me,” Eva went on. “Since having them dampened, I feel less like myself, like a piece of me is missing. I can’t wait to have full use of them again once this stupid anklet comes off.”

I sighed heavily, my shoulders sagging. “Thank you, Eva. It’s getting late. Let’s all call it a night.”

Eva nodded seriously before taking her leave.

Rion shut the door after his sister left and turned to pin me with a firm, unyielding expression. “We’re not weakening Ayla and Selene’s powers.”

I gritted my teeth but said nothing, knowing that I wouldn’t change his mind at this moment.
