Chapter 1178: Chapter 89 : - Butterfly Tornadoes
*Daphne*
The ceremony transitioned smoothly into the reception. Our small but intimate wedding party traveled together back down the mountain to a large clearing that had been set up with tables, chairs, and twinkling lights hung up in the trees.
Our beautiful land served as the backdrop, with the sun setting stunningly over the horizon, illuminating the sea of wildflowers and purple mountaintops.
As I gripped Rion’s hand, I couldn’t calm the elated pounding in my chest. It was as if the second I became his wife, everything around me started to glow. The world was brighter and richer in color, almost comparable to when I shifted to my wolf form for the very first time. I could see everything. My perspective had shifted so that Rion was the center of my world.
I was floating, and I never wanted to come down.
Rion seemed to be experiencing similar emotions. Each time he glanced at me, his gray eyes burned with a passion that I had never seen before. I jumped slightly each time he stroked my cheek or bent to give me a very husbandly kiss on the mouth, the sparks setting every nerve in my body on fire.
“I love you,” he said in a low voice as we approached our private table at the head of the reception area.
I felt my cheeks grow warm and I giggled slightly, knowing that no matter how much time passed or how old we got, Rion would still be able to make me feel like a bashful young girl.
He quirked an eyebrow, clearly amused. “What is it?”
I just gave him a cheeky grin as he bemusedly pulled out my chair for me so I could sit down. He didn’t join me right away though. Instead, he kept one hand on the back of the chair and snaked the other around my shoulders, kissing my ear.
“Are you really going to start keeping secrets from your husband this early on in our marriage?” he murmured into my ear, causing me to shiver.
Despite the butterflies beginning to create a tornado in my stomach, I managed to hum thoughtfully and lean back against him. “Does a wife really need to tell her husband every little thing?”
Rion glowered down at me playfully. “Yes,” he said immediately without an ounce of hesitation.
I laughed more openly, tilting my head back so I could look up at him. “I was just thinking that I love you too,” I said in a soft voice, my eyes watering slightly from just how innately I felt that love.
Rion stroked my hair fondly, dropping a kiss on my forehead. “You’re leaving something out,” he accused.
I rolled my eyes but relented. “Yes, you’re right,” I admitted, grabbing his hand and placing it over my chest so he could feel the pounding of my heart. “I was also thinking about how no matter how much time passes, you will always have this effect on me.”
Rion’s eyes widened slightly and I could have sworn that his own cheeks tinted pink for a moment, but it was gone before I could be sure. He stepped around so that he could stand in front of me and took my face in his hands before kissing me firmly on the lips.
I gasped against his warm lips but then quickly relaxed, my eyelids fluttering shut as I completely lost myself in him.
I was breathless when he pulled away. He kept cradling my face in his large hands. “Always,” he promised.
The sudden cheering that erupted around us had Rion and me jumping apart. Our wedding guests were beaming at us as they clapped at the display we had created.
Jasper chuckled good-naturedly and spoke up above the boisterous crowd. “Alright, will the groom please take his seat before baby number three is created?”
I felt my face burn even brighter at his words. Rion sent his best friend a dark look but obediently took his seat beside me. He slid his chair up to mine so that they were touching and then he wrapped his arms around me, pulling me against his chest.
Jasper gestured for the rest of the party to quiet down. He held a small champagne glass in his hand and suddenly gave us an adoring look. “All joking aside, I do want to congratulate these two. Not only did they find a love to outmatch all, but they did so while weathering countless storms along the way.”
I felt tears prick my eyes as the memories with Rion came flooding back all at once. Rion gave me an affectionate squeeze and I shifted in his hold so I could gaze into his eyes.
Jasper continued. “Rion, you’ve been a brother to me since the beginning and I couldn’t be more happy for you now that you’ve found someone truly irreplaceable. I’ve no doubt the two of you will strive considering all the storms you’ve battled. Here’s to the life you build now that you’ve emerged to calmer shores.”
Everyone raised their glasses for the toast.
A sweet melody began to play and Rion helped me to my feet as our guests cheered once again.
Rion pulled me to the middle of the circle of tables so that we could share the first dance.
I would never tire of being sheltered in the circle of Rion’s arms. I felt safe and cherished in his hold. He spun and dipped me in time with the music and I trusted him completely to catch me and keep me from falling every time.
As Rion held me close and we were being watched lovingly by our loved ones, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of peace and gratitude. I suddenly had everything I could ever hope for–a beautiful family, love, and a home that we would cherish forever.
The closing notes of our first dance song tapered off. Rion and I stayed entwined in each other’s embrace, only vaguely aware as our guests applauded before standing to join us on the dance floor as the second song began.
Some concerned gasps had us whirling around.
Alpha Gareth strode in, flanked by a few other intimidating shifters, including a striking blonde woman. The music stopped immediately and our guests parted to allow the newcomers to march right up to Rion and me.
Rion was quick to shove me behind him, putting himself between me and Gareth.
“Peace, Alpha Rion,” Gareth said, putting his arms up and out. “We mean no harm. We come in peace to honor your union.”
Rion didn’t budge, glaring at my former kidnapper. He wrapped a protective arm around my shoulders but kept his body shifted so that I was still mostly behind him.
I stared in disbelief at Gareth, who didn’t look quite as repentant as I thought he should and despite the tough-looking guard he had brought with him, he did seem genuine while he spoke.
“I know that I have wronged you,” Gareth said in a low, pacifying way. He gestured to the gorgeous blonde with deep blue eyes. “But as you can see, I have found my true mate, and now see the error of my ways. I have come to make amends.” He gestured to a couple of the guards, who stepped forward and opened up an extravagant wooden box.
Nestled against a bed of velvet was a stunning bejeweled dagger. The hilt was black and had rubies embedded into it in an intricate pattern. The blade was shiny and etched with swirls and vines.
I gave Rion a wary look, but he rubbed my shoulder in a consoling way before straightening. “Thank you for the obviously generous gift, Alpha,” he said. He gestured for a couple of our guards to accept the gift. It was clear that Rion didn’t really want to take it, but he was doing so diplomatically, in order to keep the peace.
I looked up at Rion’s face. He too was wary, but I saw an overwhelming amount of confidence swimming in his gray orbs as well. He had defeated Gareth before and could do so again if need be. Even though Gareth brought a significant number of guards with him, he was still vastly outnumbered.
“Thank you for coming, Alpha Gareth,” I chimed in, determined to show that I too wasn’t afraid and do my part in keeping the peace.
Gareth gave me a nod and a smile. “I couldn’t be happier for the two of you. Congratulations.”
“Thank you, I appreciate it immensely,” I told him.
“Please enjoy yourselves,” Rion said, just a little stiffly. He gestured for the band to continue playing, and after just a half-second of hesitation, they did so.
Gareth and his companions were quick to make their way to the buffet table and they even danced to a few songs.
Rion kept me extra close to his side since their arrival, moving to different parts of the reception to keep me away from the other Alpha. As soon as Gareth moved, he led me to another table so that we could greet different guests. I hugged my parents fiercely, thanking them profusely for coming.
“We’re so proud of the life that you’re building here, Daphne,” Mother said, her arms tight around me.
A single tear slid down my cheek.
“You are going to be an extraordinary Luna,” Father said warmly, giving me a kiss on the cheek.
I threw my arms around them both again.
Rion met my eyes as I stood in my parents’ embrace, his gaze soft and a peaceful smile playing on his lips. My parents let me go so they could go dance. A crowd formed around the king and queen. They spun across the dance floor like a couple of professional dancers.
Rion and I stood side by side watching them. We didn’t notice when Alpha Gareth approached us. Rion didn’t immediately shove me behind him this time, but he did stiffen and step forward before I could.
“You’ve seemed to have built a wonderful life for your pack here,” Gareth said, gesturing around at our land.
“Yes, we are extremely fortunate to have found a community filled with resilient people,” I said.
“Perhaps we could further expand your good fortune,” Gareth said.
Rion’s eyes narrowed and he wrapped an arm around my shoulders. “What do you mean?” he asked tersely.
Gareth leaned forward, his tone persuasive but firm. “Let us combine our packs,” he said. “Imagine how much more you could accomplish with a pack four times this size. We could take this land and develop it in no time at all. We could combine our resources and create an unstoppable pack.”
I felt Rion’s arm tighten around me, making it very clear what he thought about that plan. I put a hand on his chest before he could destroy the peace that we had been working to maintain. “I’m afraid that we’ll have to refuse the generous offer. Unfortunately, it appears our paths are taking us in different directions.”
Gareth’s nostrils flared, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Alpha Cyrus thankfully appeared out of nowhere and stepped between the two Alpha males. “Now, now,” he chided as if the two were children. “This is a celebration. Let’s not talk of business matters at this moment.”
Rion and Gareth both looked at Alpha Cyrus before relaxing, but not before shooting each other one last hard look.
Gareth nodded and stepped back, but not before grabbing a glass and raising it up. “Very well. We’d best be on our way. I wish you both all the best and know that you will achieve great things together.” He lifted his glass again before downing the contents before he gestured for his mate and guards to follow him out.
We watched them go, disappearing into the forest. The whole reception seemed to let out a collective sigh of relief, all of us relaxing once the potential adversaries had vanished.
Rion seemed to relax the most, leaning his cheek against my head.
I wrapped my arms around his waist, burying my face in his chest, just relishing in the fact that I was in the arms of my one true mate, my one true love.
