Chapter 1083: Chapter 146 : The First Class

“How is the adjustment from one to two kids?” Lena asked.

We sat across from each other sipping tea in the palace gardens while the kids played together.

Willow was still young enough that I kept her in a sling on my chest.

“It has been an adjustment, but Lucas has really stepped up. I wouldn’t be able to do it all without him.”

Lena grinned. “I know what you mean. Xander was so helpful when it came to having multiple children. I’m glad you and Lucas were able to work things out.”

I smiled lightly and looked at my tea. “Don’t get me wrong, the airport project still keeps him busy, but he’s found a way to balance home and work life. It helps, a lot.”

“Admit it. You’re a little jealous that he gets to travel back and forth from one realm to the next. You know you miss that freedom.”

“Well....” I glanced down at Willow and then at Hunter, who toddled around with the older kids. “Maybe a little.”

“What if I said you could have it again?”

I creased my brow at the queen. “What do you mean? I can’t leave my kids.”

“I’m not suggesting that you do. However, we have a school for gifted girls and no students. It’s time to fill the classrooms.”

“I agree, but what does that have to do with me?”

“Who better to interview prospective students than a Dream Dancer?”

“Me?” I gasped and instinctively curled an arm around Willow.

“It would require you to travel through the Dark Realm and Light Realm to find girls, but it would be rewarding work, Sasha, and I know you’d be good at it.”

I bit my lower lip and looked around the gardens again. I couldn’t deny that I wanted something meaningful to do with my life, the same kind of meaningful that Lucas had in his.

“That’s a lot of travel. And I have kids....”

“Right, but Sasha, your kids are still young. That means you don’t have to worry about taking them out of school or anything.”

“I’m sorry, Lena, I don’t understand.”

She giggled and flipped her hair over her shoulder. “If you want to recruit young girls for the school, the palace will fund your travel and supply you with a full-time nanny to help with the kids. I can even coordinate with Lucas’s schedule to make sure you’re traveling the same time he is.”

“Lena... that’s....”

“The two of you will always be home together, and maybe even meet up on your different travels. How does that sound?”

“Well... I....” I could hardly process what Lena offered. It was too good to be true.

“I know it won’t be something you can do forever. Eventually, your kids will be in school, and I know you won’t be able to travel. But by then, I’m hoping the school will have enough exposure that girls will come in on their own.”

“Wow, Lena, that is an amazing offer.”

“I want this school to succeed and I know you do too. Of course, I will travel with you when I can.”

“I’d love that. Honestly, I think this will be a lot more fulfilling than even the work to get the school renovated.”

***

Within a week, Lena had our first trip to the Light Realm planned. We sent a message ahead about our intentions and the hope was there would be families with gifted young girls who would seek us out where we were conducting our interviews.

We stayed in a nice hotel in the Light Realm, where I left the kids with a nanny. Lena and I met in the conference room where we planned to meet with prospective students.

No one was there.

I sighed and sat down. “Well, this is... discouraging.”

“Don’t worry, Sasha. It is still early.”

Throughout the day, families and their gifted daughters started to drift in. We interviewed daughters of great Alphas. Some truly were gifted with unique powers. Others were not suited for the school, despite their parents insistence that they were gifted.

With my Dream Dancer powers, I was able to help discover who had real powerful gifts and who didn’t.

There were just as many gifted girls from normal backgrounds and orphanages as there were from Alpha backgrounds.

“What’s your name, sweetie?” I asked one of the youngest girls when she came to interview.

Her mother, adorned with big, fancy jewelry and wearing designer clothing, stood behind her. She looked bored and annoyed, clicking her painted fingernails on the table and looking off into the distance.

“My name is Kara,” she said.

“How old are you?”

“Fifteen.”

I glanced at Lena. Most of the gifted girls we had in here were between eighteen and twenty. She was young.

“What would you say your gift is?”

Kara glanced at her mother.

“Go on, show them,” the mother said with an exasperated sigh.

Kara stood up. She clapped her hands together and when she pulled them apart, there was a window between them, a window into another reality.

“Oh my!” Lena gasped.

“Is that... a portal?”

Kara shook her head. She closed her hands and the windows closed. “I can make a small window into other realities. But it is just a window, and I can’t maintain it for long.”

I smiled. “Kara, you’ll fit right in at our school if you want to attend.”

We encountered girls who could do amazing things, like teleport short distances, manipulate the speed, health, and growth of plants, and even a girl who had a minor ability to manipulate time.

Lena and I invited the girls we thought would be best back to the palace for a special lunch where we could see if they’d be a good fit for the school.

“I never knew there were so many gifted girls out there,” I admitted as we flew back to the Dark Realm.

Lena and I had a similar interview day set up there. One of my conditions was that we had an equal number of students from the Dark Realm and Light Realm.

Stone’s desire to destroy the Light Realm reminded me just how much misunderstanding there was between the two realms. I wanted to make sure that wouldn’t happen in later generations.

“There are many gifts and powers out there we haven’t even explored before. Hopefully, a school like this will help us teach girls about their powers and prevent more Moriannes and Hestias from popping up.”

“Yes. I wish I had someone to help me learn my powers when I was younger... instead of having them bottled up.”

“Well, now you can make sure that doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

We shared a mutual smile.

When we met girls in the Dark Realm, we saw several more gifted young girls. There was a girl who could communicate empathically with other creatures, one who had visions of the past, and another who could make a glistening forcefield out of moonlight.

At the end of the day of interviews, one final orphan girl came in to interview. She shuffled in, her hair messy, her clothes dirty. We knew she came from a good orphanage, but she didn’t look like she was taken care of.

I glanced at Lena and frowned. Lena shrugged.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

The girl glared at me. “I don’t want to be here and I don’t want to do this. The house mother at the orphanage made me!”

“Okay... does she make you do a lot of things?”

The girl sniffed and crossed her arms. “I don’t let her make me brush my hair or wear new clothes.”

That explained her appearance.

“Do you know why you’re here?” I asked.

The girl nodded. “You want to know about my powers.”

“Can you start by telling us your name, please?” Lena asked.

“Joline,” she said bluntly.

“Alright, what is your power?” I asked.

Joline sighed. She took a step back from us and took a deep breath. She held her arms out to the sides and snapped her fingers. Sparks crackled at her fingertips and exploded into flames.

Lena and I jumped up and retreated further. Joline’s flames grew larger, crackling and choking the air in the room.

I covered my mouth, but the acrid smoke stung my nostrils. She’d burn the whole palace down, I thought.

But as soon as it all started, the fire stopped. I took in a deep breath and raked my eyes over the room. Nothing was charred or burned. There was no smoke or lingering smell.

“Was that an illusion?” I asked.

Joline nodded. “I don’t just make you see what I want you to see. I make you feel it with your senses.”

I shuddered. She was incredibly powerful, and her power could be dangerous. Even if she wasn’t the most social girl, I wanted her at the school to teach her how to use her powers.

A young woman like her with no family could easily go down the wrong path, and Joline could be a serious danger.

When all the interviews were over, Lena and I discussed the girls we interviewed and who we wanted to be in our first class.

“I think Kara is a good candidate, especially since you know about alternate realities,” Lena said.

“Yes, I agree. Nayla, the girl who manipulates flowers and plants... it is a unique power but could be beneficial to ensure there’s never a shortage of healing herbs.”

“I had the same thought. Brielle and her illusionary images is a prime candidate, as is Janice and her visions. We’ve had too many people in the past manipulate others with their visions. It would be better for someone like Janice to understand her power before she starts trying to be a prophetess.”

I nodded in agreement. “What about Callie and her time control? She’s close to a Dream Dancer. At least, I’d know what to say to her.”

Lena chuckled and nodded, making a note on her notepad. “I’m also partial to Donna and her ability to smell emotions, thoughts, and memories. That’s one I’ve never encountered before.”

“Felicity can teleport over short distances. That’s another unique power, as is Kaylee’s ability to create moonlight forcefields.”

“Her power is closely linked to the Moon Goddess. I think Kaylee is meant to be here.”

“What about Isabelle? She can communicate empathically with all creatures. I can see how beneficial or dangerous that could be if she could be taught the best way to use those powers.”

“I agree. It seems so harmless unless she decided to raise an army of lions or some other creature.” Lena sighed and looked at her list. “Okay, that’s nine girls. I want the first class to have ten students.”

“Lena... what about Joline?”

Lena bowed her head. “She’s not the right fit for this place. She doesn’t like to work with others and she has issues with authority.”

“And she has the potential to be very dangerous. I think it is important to show her a better path. If she is left alone, she might find her way to darkness from loneliness and isolation.”

I’d seen the rogue Lucas in another reality go down that path.

“I don’t know, Sasha....”

“I’ll work with her, one on one if I have to. She’s important. I can feel it.”

“Alright, you can take her under your wing. Well, that’s our first class. We need to get them all together in the palace for a luncheon so we can all get to know each other.”
