Chapter 1077: Chapter 140 : Coming Back to Life

We only had a couple of days before Lucas had to get to work on the airport project. His office was right in the palace but he was barely there, always at the site working directly with the crews. I knew how important the project was, but he worked such long days.

I got Hunter in his stroller and took him out in the palace gardens. His eyes were so wide as he took in the world around him.

“Look at those pretty flowers. Soon, you’ll be able to pick them and smell them,” I told him.

Pausing, I looked around. There were security guards hovering on the edge of the gardens. They were always around.

I knew they were there to keep me safe, but I didn’t know any of them. They didn’t talk to me but I knew they watched me. It was so strange.

“Oh, Hunter, look at this.” I walked the stroller over to a pond.

There was a nice open field, so I laid out a blanket and took Hunter from his stroller. I put him on a fluffy pillow and sat under the sun with him. He had a little hat on to keep the sun out of his face.

Every day, I felt like I talked to Hunter more and more. There was no one else to talk to. Lucas was busy, and the security guards were so stoic and statuesque.

I missed my friends and my job, but Lucas and I agreed it was too risky for me to be traveling away from the palace for work, especially since Hunter still needed me regularly for nursing.

I played with him a little but when he got drowsy, I put him back in the stroller and we headed back inside.

Lucas didn’t get home until after dinner. He came in, his shoulders slouching. He shuffled across the suite and went straight to the bedroom. Flopping down on the bed, he sighed heavily and pulled his boots off. Immediately, he laid down.

I followed Lucas into the bedroom. “Hey, are you hungry?”

He lifted his head and peered at me through half-lidded eyes. “Starved.”

“I can make you something quick if you want.”

“That would be great, thanks, Sasha.”

I went back to the kitchen and warmed up leftovers from my own meal. When I brought them back to the bedroom, Lucas was snoring soundly.

Sighing, I wrapped up his plate and put it back in the kitchen. I checked on Hunter and set up the baby monitor before grabbing a book and reading to myself. I fed Hunter one last time before heading to bed myself. Lucas had managed to shed his clothes and get under the covers.

Ever since coming to the palace, this was a normal day for us.

When Hunter was first born, Lucas had been so involved and devoted. I understood how important his project was, but I missed having family time with him. It was still important for him to spend time with Hunter, too.

I was getting fed up with the loneliness and isolation. I had no one here. Lena and Xander had their own family and duties.

I woke up early to take care of Hunter. Lucas was already in the kitchen guzzling coffee and wolfing down breakfast.

“Hey, are you taking off already?” I asked.

He swallowed what was in his mouth and stood up. “Yeah, I’m going to be late for a surveying crew. We need to start getting the tarmac down.”

“Lucas... wait a minute.”

He stopped right in front of the door. “Sasha, can this wait until later? I’m going to be late.”

“Later when? Tonight, when you pass out from exhaustion? Or tomorrow morning when you’re running out the door again?”

Lucas sighed and turned to face me. “What’s going on with you? I thought you supported my new job and promotion.”

“I didn’t know I’d never see you anymore, or that you’d be too tired to be part of this family or have a relationship.”

“Look, I’ve really got to go.” Lucas walked back toward me and kissed my cheek. “We’ll talk about this tonight, I promise.”

With that, I was left alone with the baby again. I walked Hunter around the palace and we looked at fun pictures and sculptures. He made sounds and his eyes moved around, but I knew he was too young to actually engage or understand art.

Still, I thought it was best to expose him to more colors, textures, and experiences.

That night, Lucas came home just a little early. He was still exhausted, but he sat down with me for dinner.

“Okay, so, what’s going on with you, Sasha? You know how big this job is for me,” he said.

I twirled pasta around my fork and thought carefully about how to choose my words.

“Lucas.” I sighed and set my fork down. “I feel so lonely here. I have no friends, no family, no job. It is just me and the baby all day long.”

“I thought you loved being a mother.”

“I do! That’s not the point. I want to spend more time with you and the three of us as a family.”

“We will. I promise. The beginning of the project is always the roughest. Once everyone gets into the routine of it, it’ll go a lot smoother and I’ll have more time.”

“And when will that be?” I arched an eyebrow at him.

Lucas pursed his lips. “I can’t give you an exact time frame. I just know that it will calm down.”

“Right... but is that going to be a week from now, a month, six months? This project is a big one.”

“I know that Sasha! I know it is a big project. That’s why it takes priority right now. There will be time to have family time when the project is done.”

I gaped at Lucas, hardly able to believe the words that came out of his mouth. “I’m going to feed Hunter.”

I left Lucas at the table and took care of Hunter. By the time I was done, Lucas was in bed already. I stayed up a little later before retiring myself.

When Lucas left for work the next day, I brought Hunter to visit with Lena. She scooped him right up in her arms and danced around with him.

“Oh, he is so lovely, such a prince.”

“Not like your kids,” I said, laughing.

Lena grinned at me. “He’s a prince in his own way.”

“Lena... I... I have to talk to you about Lucas.”

Lena frowned and handed Hunter back to me. We sat down together on the couch and I bounced my son lightly.

“What’s going on?”

I told her about how neglected I was feeling and how busy Lucas was. I vented to her about how he didn’t seem to care and was dismissive to my feelings. Lena nodded along and smiled lightly.

“I remember feeling like that after my first kid. It was so silly. I loved being with my kids, but I felt almost resentful of Xander for still having a life.”

“But he was able to come home and spend time with you. He was still involved.”

“Sometimes it didn’t feel like it. You know what you need? You need something to keep you busy.”

I sighed and looked at Hunter. “I’ve got plenty to keep me busy.”

“Not like that. I went through the same thing. At first, I just wanted to be a mother without any other responsibilities. Then I adjusted to motherhood and I was going crazy without anything else to do,” she explained. “I went back to work part-time and that solved a lot of problems. I think that could help you.”

I looked at Hunter again. “I don’t know, Lena. I’m not sure I’m ready yet.”

“What about a job in the palace? We have some old wings that need restoring. You could work on the architecture designs. It would be part-time, but you’ll be in charge of recruiting teams and doing what you want.”

“Oh, well... that sounds like fun, actually.”

“Great, I’ll make the arrangements.”

Lena sent me some prospective nannies. I interviewed them and selected one who was experienced and very trustworthy. I wanted someone that would be good to Hunter, knew how to take care of an infant, and someone who would give me regular updates.

She promised to text me every hour and send pictures, too.

It took a lot for me to leave Hunter the first day, but I couldn’t deny that Lena’s project idea excited me some.

I joined Lena in the first wing that needed to be restored. Immediately, I ran over to one of the arch designs.

“I know just how to reconstruct this one. And it should be repainted. This whole section should be repainted.” I waved my arm over the wall.

Lena chuckled. “I knew this would excite you and stir up your creativity.”

I grinned at her and nodded. “Thank you so much for this opportunity.”

It only took me a day to hire a team of interior decorators and restorers who could help get the wing back to its former glory. I didn’t want to change much of it because it was beautiful, old architecture, but I wanted to update some things.

My phone buzzed and I checked it, and I saw the picture that Hunter’s nanny had sent. He was sleeping soundly. I smiled and tucked my phone away.

The hourly updates helped ease my mind so I could focus on the restoration project.

I threw myself into the job fully. Lena was absolutely right. It gave me a huge creative outlet and I was having a lot of fun. Plus, I still got to see Hunter on my lunch breaks and at regular intervals throughout the day.

I wasn’t feeling as alone or isolated anymore, but I still missed spending time with Lucas and having our family time.

“You seem different,” Lucas commented one day when he got home earlier than usual.

I shrugged. “That new project Lena gave me has been very invigorating.”

Lucas grinned. “I’m glad to hear that.”

“Are you going to be working around the palace soon? It would be nice if we could go to work together again.”

“Like the good old days,” Lucas said.

I sighed and giggled, thinking back to when I was working as Lucas’s intern. It seemed like so long ago now. I still tried to hate him back then, but we were fated to be together.

“Those were good times,” Lucas said.

I rolled my eyes. “Right, back when I hated you and you were trying to seduce me.”

Lucas stuck his tongue out at me. “Like I said, the good old days.”

It was nice to laugh and joke with him again. I went to him and hugged him, feeling new energy breathed into our relationship.

“When we make a little more progress, it would be great if I could show you all the restoration we’ve done. I bet you will appreciate it.”

Lucas looked at me intensely for the first time in forever before he nodded. “I know I will be proud of anything you put your hands to, Sasha.”

I felt a warm blush spread over my body. I felt so good to connect with my mate again.
