Chapter 1076: Chapter 139 : Overcoming Barriers

*Sasha*

I stood with Lucas’s arm around me, stunned by the announcement.

Lena rushed over and handed Lucas a glass of champagne and me a glass of sparkling cider. Lucas grinned and held his up as everyone in the room toasted and cheered for him.

I forced a smile, but my stomach trembled uncomfortably. Everyone was staring at us, and I knew I was expected to be happy and supportive of Lucas.

“Well, don’t just stand there. This is your party. Come join us.” Xander motioned to the large banquet table.

Lucas looped his arm through mine and led us to the table, where Xander and Lena had reserved seats for us.

Xander remained standing, his glass still raised. “Now, I must admit, this was a long time coming. Lucas has been working hard and has such an eye for detail. I’ve had an eye on him for this kind of position for a while. As soon as it opened up, I knew who to call.”

“Thank you, Your Majesty,” Lucas said, nodding his head.

“I’m sure many of you think that building the first Dark Realm airport is an ambitious project for the newest Royal Engineer. However, who better to man the project than someone who has been to the Light Realm and on a plane himself?”

People clapped and offered Lucas praising smiles.

I smiled lightly and took a sip of cider. It was the only way to keep my composure. Lucas didn’t seem surprised at all, which meant he knew exactly what was going on.

Was this why he wanted to stay in the Dark Realm?”

“So, a toast to Lucas Black and the airport he’s going to build us that will bring us into the future.” Xander raised his glass and drank.

Everyone else followed along. Then they clapped for Lucas.

I was filled with a mixture of pride and confusion. This was the dream job that Lucas wanted. Why hadn’t he told me he’d gotten his dream job?

I kept quiet through the entire dinner. Lucas talked to the other engineers, and we ate a non-frozen dinner for the first time since Hunter was born. I kept my composure but as soon as dinner was over, I excused myself to check on Hunter.

Lucas stayed to talk to some of his new colleagues. I relieved the nanny and nursed Hunter.

All I could think about was that big smile on Lucas’s face when he was being toasted and praised. Sure, I was proud of him. I wanted all his dreams to come true. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that Lucas had convinced me to stay in the Dark Realm because of his career opportunities.

I put Hunter down to sleep again and retired for the night before Lucas got back to our suites. I was too confused and upset to talk to him about my feelings.

When I woke up, Lucas was still asleep. I got right up and showered quickly before feeding Hunter and changing his diaper. He was fussy that morning. Even though he was just an infant, I had a feeling he sensed that things had changed.

Either that or he was picking up on my anxiety and confusion.

I rocked Hunter gently.

“It’s okay, my love. Everything is fine. You’re safe and I’m here. Your dad is here. We love you so much.” I burped him and then got him down in the bassinet again.

Just as Hunter closed his eyes and sighed, Lucas stirred behind me.

“Oh, you’re up already?” he asked.

I turned and nodded slowly. “Did you have a nice time last night?”

Lucas smiled and nodded. “Yeah. I wasn’t expecting Xander to do anything like that.”

I went to the bed and sat beside Lucas. He creased his brow and put his hand on my lap. “Sasha, what’s wrong?”

“You knew about this promotion already. Xander told you.”

“I did. But I wasn’t hiding it from you. I got the promotion the same day you went into labor. We’ve been so preoccupied with Hunter. I didn’t want to add to everything.”

“So, when were you going to tell me?”

Lucas sighed and leaned back on the pillows. “I was waiting for the right time. Then you wanted to move to the Light Realm. I didn’t want the job to influence your decision.”

“But it influenced yours, didn’t it? Isn’t this job why you wanted to move to stay in the Dark Realm?”

“That’s not the reason. Everything I said about bringing danger to the Light Realm is true,” he defended.

I turned away from him, watching Hunter’s slow rise and fall of his chest as he slept soundly.

“Is this a bad thing, Sasha? This is the job I’ve always wanted. If you insist that we move to the Light Realm, then I will give it up. That’s why I didn’t want to tell you. I didn’t want you to think I was trying to guilt you.”

“So, you lied to me instead? Lucas, I know how much this job means to you. I’m proud of you for finally reaching your dreams but I... I can’t help but feel like you should have been more transparent with me about the job before convincing me to stay in the Dark Realm.”

Lucas bowed his head and closed his eyes. He looked so remorseful and sad.

“I’m sorry, Sasha. You’re right, I should have told you. I thought it was the wrong timing, with the baby and all your nightmares.”

“Maybe it wasn’t the wrong time. It might have helped me to have some good news,” I said. I sighed and tipped my head back. “I won’t lie. This whole thing hurt my feelings. I wish you’d disclosed the truth about it.”

“You’re right.” Lucas leaned forward and looped his arm around my shoulders. “I should have told you. And I shouldn’t have convinced you to stay in the Dark Realm without telling you about the job first.”

I leaned against him and melted into him. It was nice to hear his apology and be comforted by him, despite the mixed feelings I was still having.

“The job isn’t why I wanted to stay. First and foremost, I have my family’s safety in mind. It is all that matters to me. Travel to the Light Realm is dangerous. You know that. We were attacked by The Immortal and I lost you for days.”

“I get that. But Lucas, The Immortal isn’t a threat anymore. Morianne and Stone aren’t a threat either.”

“And you’ve been having nightmares about a Dark Lord, prophecies, and the alternate Sasha. Do you really think it would be an easy crossing?”

I shrugged. “I think I would feel better being in the Light Realm. I know the dangers, but I feel like the Dark Realm has caused us more strife than the Light Realm.”

“Look, I’ll be honest. The job was some incentive to stay here. If we go to the Light Realm, neither of us will have jobs or a way to support our son. We don’t have the same strong resources as we have here. The job gives me another means to protect my family by allowing us to live here.”

“That... makes sense.”

Lucas’s reasoning was sound, but it still felt awful that he kept the truth from me.

“Not to mention, I can oversee the development of the Dark Realm airport here. I can make sure it is finished quickly and efficiently, and then we can fly to the Light Realm, which is much safer than traveling by boat.”

“I understand, Lucas. You haven’t said anything I disagree with. I’d just like you to be more honest with me. Be more open with your communications.”

“I can work on that.”

“This is both of our lives, and our family. You can’t be the only one to make decisions about our family future and the safety of our family.”

Hunter gurgled and I stood up to check on him. He was still sleeping quietly as ever. I picked up one of Hunter’s stuffed animals and I held it to my chest.

“What can I say to make this better, Sasha? I don’t want to fight. I want things to be okay between us.”

He stood up and walked to me, putting his hands on my shoulders.

“I want us to make decisions together, and I want us to always be on even ground,” I said. “Whatever information you have, I want you to share it with me and I will do the same.”

“Okay. I promise to share news and information with you, upfront, going forward.”

“Thank you.”

Lucas brushed his thumbs over my cheeks and leaned in, kissing my forehead. I let out a long, slow breath, releasing my frustration. I couldn’t do anything to change what Lucas had done, but I liked that he was promising to make an effort.

“Okay, I forgive you... this time,” I said, giving Lucas a look.

He grinned and nodded. “I guess I have no more ‘get out of jail free’ cards?”

“No, no more.” I shook my head and smiled, letting Lucas know I was teasing.

He pulled me against him, hugging me against his chest. “You know, this life, this job, it doesn’t mean anything if you’re mad at me.”

“I’m not mad. I’m really proud of you and I’m so happy that you’re reaching your dreams. You have no idea how much I’ve wanted this for you.”

“Thank you, Sasha. That means a lot. And I promise that with my new position and income, I will be spoiling you and Hunter for the rest of your lives.”

“Oh yeah, and what about the four other kids we’re supposed to have?”

Lucas winked at me. “There will be plenty to go around.”

I dropped the stuffed animal and wrapped my arms around Lucas. I buried my nose in his chest and nuzzled against him.

“You’re the most amazing engineer I’ve ever worked with, Lucas.”

“The airport is a big project, but I think I’m up for the task. I can show you all the blueprints and sketches I’ve been working on.”

I sucked in a sharp breath. Apparently, Lucas had known about this job for a while and had even started working on the details. He told me he found out the day I went into labor, but he was also working on the project in secret, without telling me.

I let the moment of frustration pass.

“You’ll be great as a Royal Engineer, and I know you’ll excel at this project. Lucas, I’m very proud of you. Even when I’m mad at you, I’m always proud of you.”

Lucas chuckled and ran his nose through my hair.

“That means the world to me, Sasha. Thank you for not holding this against me. I want the best future for our son, and I believe we can give that to him here.”

He kissed my forehead again. I sighed, hoping that this wouldn’t be something to worry about.
