Chapter 1059: Chapter 122 : The Safehouse

*Alternate Sasha*

Stone walked me out of the diner to a waiting car. He carefully got me into the back seat, protecting my head from getting bumped as though he were a police officer securing a suspect.

I felt cared for a little bit at least. I soaked it up, wondering if he’d be this caring once we arrived at our new location.

With a swallow, I watched Stone get into the driver’s seat. What was it they always said about kidnapping? ‘Never go to the second location’?

The car engine turned over and I realized it was too late. I gripped the armrest, my knuckles going white with fear.

Stone looked in the rearview mirror and gave me a reassuring smile. “Everything’s going to be okay from now on, Sasha.”

I wished I could believe him. I wished a lot of things. I wished I wasn’t pregnant and in charge of protecting a baby that wasn’t really mine. I wished my Stone were here. I wished Lucas and the other Sasha had never shown up in my reality. And, some traitorous part of me still wished my Lucas had loved me, had accepted me, had created the kind of relationship with me that other Sasha had with hers.

The ride was shorter than I expected. We drove away from the more middle-class part of the city and through an area I’d have been hesitant to walk alone in during the daytime. It was rundown and seedy, with sketchy characters hanging around corners and alleyways.

Thankfully, we passed through the area, though not far, and were soon at a small house outside the city. It looked cozy and well-kept.

Stone came to the back and opened the door for me, helping me out of the car. “See? Nothing sinister,” he said as though he’d been reading my thoughts.

I gave a nervous laugh and took his arm, letting him lead me into the house.

Inside, there were baby items everywhere, already assembled and ready to go–a vibrating bassinet in the living room with a small blanket on the floor and a baby gym for the baby to tug on and look at, a fully furnished baby room in blue, showing that Stone knew the baby was a boy. All the furniture matched. It was a bright happy white color, and there was an elephant border along the blue-striped walls.

A white rocking chair with blue spindles occupied one corner, and there was a small bookshelf with all the books I’d liked when I was a child. A big teddy bear sat on a dresser already filled with nappies and cute little outfits. There was a fully-stocked changing table that even had butt cream in case the little guy got diaper rash.

“Stone... this is all so...” I whispered, tearing up.

“You haven’t even seen the best part yet,” Stone said, sliding his arm around my shoulders. He brought me to the master bedroom, where there was a bassinet set up next to the bed, a second bottle warmer, and a baby monitor, along with other supplies.

I looked at the bed, then up at Stone.

He laughed and patted my arm. “Don’t worry. I’ve set up a guest room for myself. I don’t want to pressure you into anything, Sasha. I’ll only be joining you on that bed if you ask me.”

I sagged with relief. “Thank you, Stone. I’m sorry if I’ve disappointed you....”

Stone cupped my cheek and pressed his forehead to mine. “Sasha, you could never disappoint me.”

For a moment, I almost believed him. For a moment, he was my Stone and not some stranger.

And then he opened his mouth.

“With you here, safe, it will be easier for me to carry out our vengeance. I wouldn’t want you to get hurt.”

I stifled a sigh and nodded. “That’s very considerate of you.”

“I know. I was so worried I was going to have to start with you in the way,” Stone said worriedly. “But now everything will be fine.”

“Will you make them send us back where we belong?” I asked.

“I’ll only make them do what you want. If we decide we’re happy here, well, we only need to get rid of them and we can be quite happy right where we are,” Stone replied.

I blinked. It had never occurred to me to get rid of Lucas and the other Sasha. Some part of me had always reasoned that this was their reality and they had a right to it.

Stone chuckled. “You look as though you never thought that was possible. But why not? You’re getting a degree here, and that Lucas has as good as rejected you as well. All they want from you is that baby. They don’t care what you want.”

“I-I’m glad you care what I want,” I responded, hoping it was the truth and he wasn’t just shining me on.

“I do.” Stone skimmed his lips over my knuckles in a gallant kiss. “I care what you want, Sasha. I’ll help you raise this baby, no matter whose it is. I love you. That’s what matters to me. What you want, that’s what I want for you.”

My heart squeezed. I could love this Stone.

But then, I was getting tired of loving and disappointed by men who didn’t belong to me.

“Stone,” I said carefully, “could you love me even if I wasn’t your Sasha?”

A surprised look flickered over Stone’s face, then he grinned. “You always were a smart one, Sasha, no matter which reality you come from.” He hugged me close. “I do love you. Even if I’m not technically your Stone, I think you and I can build a real life together... a real life for us and the baby.”

It was what I wanted to hear. That’s what made me suspicious. But I decided I’d better go along with it for now, for the baby’s sake if nothing else. “I’m glad to hear that.”

“Good. Now we’ve got that little bit of nastiness out of the way.” Stone released me and ushered me over to the bed. “You must be tired, Sasha. You’ve been up all night worrying about what you’re going to do. What you’re going to do is stay here and rest up. I’ll be here when I can be, and I’m going to take good care of you.”

“Okay,” I responded. “That sounds nice.” I paused. “What are you going to do when you’re not here?”

“Vengeance takes a lot of work, my sweet,” Stone chuckled. “But don’t you worry. I won’t let all this ugliness touch you. You’re my girl.”

“I’m your girl,” I echoed. I hoped it was true. I wanted it to be true so badly.

I kicked off my shoes and let Stone tuck me into bed. He promised me something delicious to eat when I woke up, something that had nothing to do with eggs.

His reassurances about the eggs made me laugh. It felt good to laugh with him again.

“You just get your rest,” Stone cooed at me, smoothing the blankets down and fluffing my pillows. “I’ll be here when you wake up.”

“Promise?” I asked, not entirely liking the vulnerability in my tone.

“Promise,” Stone said. Then he kissed my forehead and headed out of the room, leaving the door open just a crack as though I were a frightened child.

I didn’t mind so much, because with the door open even that little crack, I could hear Stone’s next words.

“It’s me,” Stone murmured.

It took me a moment, but I realized he was on the phone.

“Yes, I have her,” Stone said. “She’s all tucked in and cozy. No, she’s not going anywhere. I’ve just about got her wrapped around my little finger.”

I wrinkled my nose. I didn’t know about that.

“We’ll be staying here until she has the baby. The other plans are in motion. Yes, it is a good thing she finally got out of that house. I don’t know what we would have done if she was still there when it all went down,” Stone went on.

‘All what?’ I wondered. In spite of myself, I found myself worrying about Lucas and the other Sasha. I might not exactly be happy with them at the moment, but I didn’t want anything catastrophic to happen to them, either.

“This Sasha? She doesn’t suspect a thing. And even if she did, she’s totally on board. They’ve screwed her over just as badly as the rest of us. There’s no reason to think she’s anything but pissed off about it. I think she’d agree they deserve what’s coming to them,” Stone said.

I wasn’t so sure about that, either. Lucas had been nothing but kind to me, and he had been honest from the beginning about not being able to love me. It was that other Sasha....

Maybe I could convince Stone to let Lucas walk away and just wreak his vengeance on the other Sasha. She definitely deserved it after what she’d taken from me.

And if this Stone turned out to be a real asshole, well, then I could go back to Lucas and play innocent if he wasn’t dead and she was. Either way, I could finally get the love I craved.

The rest of Stone’s conversation was lost as he changed rooms, but I knew enough now to know I should be very wary of him. I would go along with his plans for now, but if he proved as dangerous as Lucas seemed to think he was, I was getting out of here.

I would just have to keep watching and listening.

With that decided, I closed my eyes and snuggled into the warm softness of the bed Stone had provided me. It was just one of many things I should be grateful for.

I dreamed of the baby–holding the baby, rocking the baby.

A kind man stood behind me, protective over the both of us. Only, sometimes it was Stone and sometimes it was Lucas.

Either way, the baby and I were well taken care of, and that was how it was going to be in reality as well.

I would make sure of it.
