Chapter 1058: Chapter 121 : Eavesdropping

*Alternate Sasha*

I clutched the robe over my naked body more tightly around me, feeling foolish and betrayed. Somehow that bitch other Sasha had managed to come back, even without my help. And she was sleeping with my man.

My heart sank. Well, technically, it was her man, not mine. There was no mate bond between Lucas and me. My Lucas had rejected and abandoned me... the asshole.

Still, I could have made this Lucas mine if the other Sasha had just stayed away a little longer.

But no, now I had to listen to the wet sounds and low cries of their reunion when I’d come here with the plan of seducing Lucas myself. All I had needed was this one night, this one opportunity. And the other Sasha had stolen it from me.

I should have turned away and gone back to my room, but it was like a train wreck. I couldn’t just look away. Because this train wreck was my life.

Finally, they stopped with their cries of satisfaction, and I was about to make my way back to the guest room weighed down by my own humiliation, when they began to talk.

I winced when the other Sasha revealed to Lucas that I’d shut down her efforts to connect with me and come back. That wasn’t going to win me any points.

And, indeed, Lucas’s disappointment was clear when he asked the other Sasha what she wanted to do with me.

I leaned in, holding my breath, waiting to hear what sentence she was going to put on my life.

The other Sasha, that cold bitch, told Lucas that they would wait until I have ‘their’ baby, and then send me back to my reality.

I clutched my belly, betrayal knifing through me as Lucas easily agreed.

The baby.

It was all about the baby.

Neither of them cared about me.

Lucas didn’t care about me.

I fled back down the hall to the guest room and threw off my robe, feeling stupid now for wanting to seduce that backstabbing bastard.

Muttering diatribes against both of them under my breath, I struggled into some clothes and grabbed my purse. Or rather her purse. Everything in this place was really hers.

I wanted to take it all off and burn it, but it wasn’t as though I had other options. Instead, I angrily slung the purse over my shoulder and headed out into the hall.

The hall was empty and silent. I tiptoed my way to the staircase and down it, toward the front door.

It appeared that no one was going to stop me.

With one last smug look up the stairs, I slipped out the front door. Let them wonder where I’d gone. Let them worry about the baby. Goddess knew they weren’t going to be worried about me.

I went into the garage, noting that Ian was nowhere to be found, and I was glad of that. I found the keys for one of the cars and got in the driver’s seat after sliding the seat all the way back. Sure, it wasn’t exactly safe for the baby, but I didn’t give a fuck about that right now.

No one stopped me as I drove slowly into the night... slowly because it took me a while to get the hang of this driving thing.

But I wasn’t an idiot and was almost an engineer, so it only took me until I got to the bottom of the hill to figure out what I was doing.

I drove into the city, parking the car in some random lot just in case they came looking for it. I knew they’d come looking for me, or rather the baby, but I wasn’t going to make myself that easy to find.

Sighing to myself, I waddled down the streets, looking for something, anything, that was open.

Luck smiled on me when I found an all-night diner. I stepped inside and heaved myself into a narrow booth, my belly pushing the table out with a loud squeal.

The sparse patrons turned to look briefly at me, then went back to their eggs and pancakes.

A frazzle-haired waitress popped over to my table with a pad, and I quickly just asked for orange juice. The smell of someone’s fried egg was making me nauseous, and I wasn’t sure I could keep anything else down.

I nursed my orange juice while I tried to think of my next move. Without Lucas’s support, I was utterly alone in the world.

Or so I thought.

As dawn was just beginning to reflect off the plate glass windows, a shadow loomed over me. I looked up and jumped when I saw Stone.

“Sasha,” Stone said, sliding into the booth across from me.

“Probably not the one you’re looking for,” I replied glumly.

Stone reached across the table and took my hand. “No. You’re definitely the Sasha I’m looking for. We were engaged, remember?”

I perked up at his words. “Yes, I remember.”

“Good, good. Because I remember it very fondly,” Stone said. “I remember walking through the gardens with you, all those passionate kisses under the stars. I remember your love and your loyalty. I miss you.”

“I’ve missed you, too,” I confessed. My heart soared at the idea that this was my Stone, that somehow, he had come for me.

Stone relaxed, a satisfied smile playing across his lips.

It was then that I knew this wasn’t actually my Stone, even before he said, “We need to get vengeance on our enemies, Sasha.”

I didn’t pull my hand away. This Stone seemed dangerous, and I thought it was safer to play his game. “Stone,” I pleaded. “I just want to go home and be loved and pretend none of this ever happened.”

Stone shook his head. “No, Sasha. Look what they’ve done to you. I’ve been following you since you got here, afraid to approach because of that blasted Lucas Black. I thought... I thought he’d at least treat you right, but here you are... in a diner, pregnant, since the middle of the night.”

He had a point. I bowed my head over my juice. “Well, it was me who ran away.”

“I know,” Stone replied, giving my hand what I’m sure he thought was a comforting squeeze. “Why did you do that, by the way?”

“This world’s Sasha returned,” I said glumly.

He might as well know, I thought.

Stone’s eyes lit with a fire that made me uneasy. He looked almost... crazy. “Did she, now? And I suppose Lucas dropped you like a hot potato.”

I blushed with shame. “He did.”

Stone brought my hand to his lips and kissed it. I suppressed a shudder. “None of that is your fault. None of this is your fault. They are bad, selfish people who only want you for the baby they caused to be in your body in the first place.”

“Well, technically it’s her body, and things just sort of got switched around–” I began to explain.

Stone shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. They hurt you. Whether they did it on purpose or not is up for debate. But they certainly haven’t done anything to fix the situation for you since then, have they? No, they’ve just kept you around like an incubator.”

My eyes welled up at his description of the situation.

Clicking his tongue, Stone stood and then slid into my side of the booth, putting his arm around me. “We have to make them fix it, darling. We have to make them put everything right. or we have to make them suffer for the pain they’ve caused. Is it really fair they get their happily ever after while you’re hovering around some seedy diner in the middle of the night, just hoping they don’t screw up your life any more than they already have?”

I couldn’t help it. I burst into tears as he laid all my fears bare.

“Shh. Shh, darling. I’m going to make it all alright,” Stone murmured into my hair, rocking me gently.

The waitress came up with a frown on her face. “Ma’am, is this guy bothering you?”

“No,” I sniffled, raising my face up to look at her. “No, he’s my fiance. He’s helping me through a hard time.”

“That’s right, love. I’m your fiance,” Stone whispered, still rocking me.

The waitress looked uncertain but finally gave in with a huff. “You having something, mister?”

“A baby, it seems,” Stone replied with a charming chuckle.

That softened the waitress up a bit. “Good for a baby to have a daddy. Glad you’re working this out together. But... er... I did mean like coffee or a sandwich or something.”

“Are you hungry, darling?” Stone asked me.

I made a face. “Someone’s having eggs. It’s... bothering me.”

Anger flashed across Stone’s face, but was quickly replaced by a sympathetic look. “Oh. Well then maybe we should just take something to go. How does that sound?”

Unease had me glancing at the door. “Where are we going?” I asked.

The waitress caught my look and pursed her lips, not leaving the table.

“I’ve got a place all set up for you and the baby,” Stone said. He looked sharply at the waitress. “Can you give us a minute?”

“You okay, honey?” the waitress asked me.

Worry for the baby drove my next words. “I’m fine,” I responded with a forced smile.

The waitress made a ‘hmph’ sound but moved off a little way, not far, but far enough to give us a little privacy.

“Sasha, Lucas has betrayed you. This world’s Sasha wants to tear that baby away from you and then send you away, right?” Stone asked.

I wondered how he knew. “How–”

“It’s obvious. It wasn’t even a guess. Once they have that baby, they have no more use for you,” Stone said. He hugged me tighter. “I want to protect you... you and the baby.”

I looked at the waitress. She was signaling the fry cook, a huge mountain of a man who looked as though he wouldn’t need the spatula he was holding to beat Stone to death if it came to it.

After thinking a little about my situation, however, I made a bold decision. I just hoped it was the right one.

“Okay,” I said slowly. “Take me to a safe place.”

Stone’s features lit with triumph, and I instantly wondered if I’d just made the worst decision of my life.

But what choice did I have? Everyone in this world–everyone–was on Lucas and the other Sasha’s side.

Except Stone.

He might not be my Stone, and by this time I was absolutely convinced he wasn’t. But he was a Stone, and my Stone loved me. So why not this one?

At least he could keep the baby and me both safe and hidden for the time being.

Stone stood and held out his hand to me. “You won’t regret this, Sasha.”

I took his hand. “I know,” I said softly.

Inside, I just desperately prayed he was right.
