Chapter 1053: Chapter 116 : My Life Now

*Lucas*

"Hi, Lucas!" the other Sasha said enthusiastically as I entered Sasha’s office, making me jump.

"Uh... hi," I replied, setting down the book I’d taken back on Sasha’s stack. "What brings you here?"

"Oh, you know, just curious," she beamed.

I took a look at what was in front of her. She was looking over plans, reading engineering books, and even doing a little sketching.

“I figured I could at least try to keep up with Sasha’s studies,” she said. “If she’s anything like me, I know she worked hard to get herself through school.”

“That is kind and thoughtful of you.”

“It does help that I was studying the same thing.”

"Hm." I moved some papers and settled down on a chair next to her. "Have you eaten?"

"Phoebe brought me something about an hour ago," she replied. Then she looked at the clock and jumped. "Oh... I guess it was more than an hour ago."

I sighed and stood, holding out my hand. "Come on. Let’s get you something to eat."

She gave me a winning smile, and I could see in her eyes there was enthusiasm in them for more than food.

My gut twisted. I hated seeing this Sasha in my Sasha’s body. I hated that she was carrying our baby. But most of all, now that a month had passed and I was still taking care of her, I hated that she’d begun to take an interest in me.

This Sasha was getting far too comfortable in my Sasha’s life, my Sasha’s body, but what was I supposed to do, break her heart and have her run off with our baby?

No, it was best to just leave things unspoken between us. She could have her little fantasies until my Sasha managed to put things right.

And I knew she would put things right. Eventually.

"Lucas," she asked as we reached the kitchen. "Do you ever think you could pretend I was your mate?"

I let go of her hand as though it were a hot poker.

Her eyebrows drew together in concern, and she looked at me expectantly.

Should I lie?

The subtle differences between them all added up to too much. I would never be able to think of this more meek, soft-spoken Sasha with such an innocent spirit as my mate... unlike my feisty, fiery, trailblazing Sasha.

No, not ever.

I stared at her for a long while. Finally, I decided to tell the truth.

"No."

She looked crestfallen, tears welling up in her eyes. I immediately felt bad for being so blunt. She placed a hand on her rounded belly and took a shaky breath.

"I’m sorry," I said more gently. "I know this situation is difficult for you too. But you have to understand. You may look like Sasha on the outside, but you’re not her. You don’t share our history and the bond that we’ve built over time. I miss my mate terribly, and I’ll never stop trying to get her back."

She wiped her eyes and nodded reluctantly. "You really love her, don’t you?"

"More than anything," I said fervently.

The other Sasha was quiet for a moment. "I guess I hoped that since I’m carrying your child, we could make this work somehow. I don’t want our baby growing up without a father."

That gave me pause. She had a point. Regardless of our circumstances, this was still my child. I would have responsibilities. But I also knew I could never truly love this Sasha or be the mate she clearly wanted.

"I will be here for our child, you have my word on that," I said gently. "But romantically, I only want my Sasha."

She nodded sadly. "I understand. I’m sorry for putting you in such an awkward position."

I gave her a small, reassuring smile. "You’ve been through a lot too. Let’s just take things one day at a time, okay?"

She returned my smile bravely. "Okay."

We focused on making a light dinner, and then I walked her back to the guest room to rest, though my mind was troubled. I had to find a way to get my mate back before things got more complicated with this other Sasha. I missed my Sasha fiercely, like an ache in my soul.

Somehow, some way, I had to reach her across dimensions.

*Alternate Sasha*

In truth, I wasn’t surprised by Lucas’ firm rejection, though it still stung deeply. I wished I’d had a mate as loyal and devoted as him in my own world. With a bitter smile, I climbed into the too-big, too-empty guest bed alone yet again.

This past month of Lucas’ gentle care and support had lulled me into a false sense of comfort and belonging here. But clearly Lucas still saw me only as an imposter, not his true beloved mate.

I curled up on my side, one hand gently rubbing my swollen belly, seeking our child’s soothing movements within. This innocent baby growing inside me was the one good thing to come out of this whole mess.

Lucas was absolutely right. I could never replace his Sasha in his heart. But I could focus on preparing a stable, loving life for our child here. Lucas had promised faithfully that he would be fully involved and present as the father, and I had to trust that would be enough.

Exhausted both physically and mentally, I finally fell into a troubled, uneasy sleep filled with vivid dreams of the loving life here that could have been mine... if only circumstances were different.

I woke with a start, confused by the voice that sounded like me but wasn’t me echoing in my mind. ‘Sasha... I need to talk to you.’

I froze, realization dawning. It was the Sasha that belonged to this world, reaching out through our dream dancer powers. I knew instantly that she was seeking to reclaim her life.

Panic seized me. "No," I cried out loud, relieved for the first time that Lucas was not in the bed next to me. "Leave me alone!"

But her voice persisted, stronger now. ‘Please, let me explain–’

"Go away!" I growled, clutching my head. "This is my life now!"

‘I know you’re scared,’ came Sasha’s gentle reply. ‘But we need to work together.’

"I won’t let you take this from me!" Anger and fear churned within me. Without thinking, I lashed out mentally, forcefully blocking her contact.

Silence fell. I shuddered, overwhelmed. Had I really just done that? Had I shut her out?

Guilt flickered through me but I pushed it down. I had to protect myself and my baby.

As I tried to settle down and fall asleep, doubt gnawed at me. Maybe I should have listened. But it was too late now. Even if it meant leaving this Lucas and starting my own life, I had chosen my path. Now I could only move forward, into the stolen life I so desperately wanted to keep.

Exhaustion swept over me. I curled up in bed, one hand on my belly as the baby kicked sharply. "It’s okay little one," I whispered. "I promise, everything will be okay."

I could only hope I was telling the truth. With Sasha shut out, my fate here was sealed. For better or worse, this life belonged to me now.

Silence instantly fell, both within my restless mind and the room around me. I felt a spreading sense of relief wash over me, along with a small twinge of guilt over my actions. But I quickly tamped down that unwelcome emotion–I had to look out solely for myself in this new world and my unborn baby.

The next morning, still troubled by the contact the night before, I got up much earlier than usual. I went straight to Sasha’s home office to continue researching.

I was completely absorbed in my reading when Lucas suddenly wandered into the room, his dark hair adorably mussed and his gray eyes still blinking away sleep.

"Sasha? What are you doing up so early?" he asked with a yawn.

I quickly plastered a bright, cheerful smile on my face. "Oh, just reading up on some more of this architecture stuff for work. It’s actually pretty interesting material!"

Lucas nodded slowly, his handsome features unreadable. I hoped I was at least beginning to convince him of the authenticity of my commitment to fully staying here and making a real life in this world, and that I could be his true Sasha now, if he would just give me the chance.

No matter what the other Sasha attempted from her side, I would not let her back into this world or Lucas’ heart. I was determined to make sure this life became fully mine now, one way or another.

A few days later, Lucas took me to my next prenatal checkup. As the doctor moved the ultrasound wand over my swollen belly, Lucas stared transfixed at the screen.

"There’s your baby’s face," the doctor said with a smile. "Looking very healthy."

Lucas’s eyes shone with wonder and joy. "Amazing," he murmured. Then his expression became wistful. "I wish my Sasha could be here to see this. She would be so happy."

His words felt like a slap in the face. Anger and hurt rose up in me as I lay there with the cold gel on my stomach.

After the appointment, I stormed out to the car without a word. Lucas hurried after me, confused. "Sasha, is everything okay? Did something happen?"

I whirled to face him, tears in my eyes. "This is my baby now too! But you keep acting like I’m nothing but an imposter carrying your child, like I don’t matter at all!"

Lucas looked stunned. "I didn’t mean to make you feel that way. I just–"

"I get it. You want your Sasha back. Well, I didn’t ask for any of this, but I am here. I am trying to make the most of this and accept it. This is my body now and this is me.”

He looked at me, confused, and I felt even more frustrated. “Just take me home," I snapped, getting into the car.

The drive back was silent and tense. As soon as we arrived, I got out and turned to Lucas, my jaw set.

"I’ll be handling my medical care alone from now on," I informed him coldly. "You don’t need to bother taking me anymore."

"Sasha, wait," Lucas protested, but I slammed the car door on his words.

Inside, I hurried to the guest room and crumpled onto the bed as furious sobs tore from my chest.

It wasn’t fair!

I was doing everything I could to embrace my new life here, but at every turn, I was reminded that I would never measure up to his precious Sasha.

Well, if Lucas couldn’t fully accept me, then I refused to keep trying to win his affection. Going forward, I would focus solely on preparing for this baby on my own terms.

With my hormones raging, I cried until I fell asleep. I had never felt more hurt, unwanted, and alone.
