Chapter 1052: Chapter 115 : The Slithering Dark

*Lucas*

Brady finally convinced me to go get a cup of coffee with him. We’d been there two days straight, Brady not leaving my side, me not leaving the other Sasha’s. Brady also told me I stank, so I hit the other Sasha’s hospital shower after sharing a quiet coffee with Brady, both of us looking down at the unconscious Sasha.

When I opened the shower door, steam rolled out, but cleared quickly to reveal a number of doctors and Brady crowded around this Sasha’s bed.

“She’s awake,” one of the doctors told me, making way for me to go to the bedside.

“She and the baby are stable,” another doctor said happily as I sat down next to Sasha.

Her eyes were wide and shocked, but I felt no bond with her. My heart plummeted.

Her eyes fell on me and curiously searched my face. “You aren’t my Lucas, are you?”

It wasn’t really a question.

I gave her a warm smile, one that Brady echoed, and gently took one of her hands in mine.

“No, I’m not.”

The other Sasha looked down at our joined hands with a frown, and I quickly let go. “How did you make it to this reality?” I asked.

It was the wrong thing to say.

*Alternate Sasha*

“How did I get here? How did I get here?!” I yelled, anger and confusion swirling like a blender inside me. “Not ‘how are you’ or ‘how are you feeling.’ Just straight to the point, huh?”

The other Lucas, the one who had accepted his Sasha and who was happily expecting this baby inside me, which also wasn’t mine, did a bit of a mental backpedal. I could see it in his eyes.

“Er...”

“Let me tell you how I got here. There was a Lycaon church rebellion and uprising that breached the castle in my reality. They took many dangerous artifacts and freed Morianne. Now I’m here and my fiance is in prison. That’s how I ended up here,” I fumed. I knew it wasn’t really his fault, but he had the face of that asshat Lucas from my reality, and it felt good to shout at him.

“So... Morianne brought you here?” Lucas asked carefully.

“No, the flying circus did. Yes, of course that crazy witch Morianne brought me here!” I grumbled. “Look. I was happily sleeping next to my fiance. I woke up pregnant with someone else’s baby and with my fiance in prison. Not even in my own body! And when I asked Lucas for help, he wanted no part of it and rejected me–stupid rogue asshole.”

“S-Sasha,” Lucas said softly, as though he wasn’t sure exactly what to call me.

“Yes, Lucas?” I replied peevishly.

Lucas sighed and gave me a pleading look with those steel gray eyes of his, eyes I’d met when I woke up in my own reality, eyes that had been so cold to me when rejecting me. And yet, this was not that Lucas. I felt myself thaw a bit.

“I won’t abandon you. I promise. I don’t know what kind of an idiot that other Lucas is, but he doesn’t deserve you,” Lucas stated.

It was a cool balm to my soul to have at least one Lucas apologizing to me for the way I’d been treated. “Yes, well, when I get back, I think I’m going to march right up and tell him that, too,” I sniffed.

“You do that,” this Lucas said with a small smile.

I licked my lips, my throat suddenly feeling scratchy. “Could... I maybe get some water?”

Much to my surprise, Lucas sprang right up and got it himself. Yes, he was so much different from the Lucas in my reality.

Lucas put the cup to my lips and I took some small sips, then settled back into the pillows. Doctors were still flitting around us, but for some reason, it seemed like we were the only two people in the world.

"Thank you," I said softly. The cool water soothed my dry throat and helped calm my frazzled nerves. Lucas’ kindness touched me in a way I hadn’t expected.

"Of course," he replied. His voice was gentle, his eyes soft.

I studied his face, noting the similarities and differences from my Lucas. The shape of his jaw, the line of his nose, the style of his hair–they were all the same. But his energy felt lighter, warmer, as though he didn’t carry the same burdens.

Maybe that was why he could show me compassion so easily, while my Lucas struggled. This Lucas hadn’t lived through the same losses, the same pain. He was less guarded, more open.

I wondered what my life might have been like if I’d met this version of Lucas instead. Would we have fallen in love? Would he have ever rejected me, abandoned me when I needed him most?

My heart ached for the future we could have had. But it wasn’t meant to be. I was here, carrying a stranger’s child, and he’d run off to be somewhere else.

"My fiance is in prison and my mate rejected me," I whispered bitterly. "Lucas just... left me there, alone. Goddess, it’s like there’s almost nothing left to live for."

This Lucas paled and touched my arm. It didn’t feel so strange this time, and I turned slightly toward him. "Please, don’t say that. Think of the baby."

"Oh, I’m not going to do anything to hurt this baby. I know he’s not really mine, but he sort of is?" I said, trying to explain how confusing the situation was.

"I know. And that other Lucas wasn’t me, but sort of was. All my worst parts, I expect. You yell at me all you want," Lucas said.

A laugh bubbled up inside me, and suddenly I was laughing and crying at the same time.

Lucas took my hand again, rubbing his thumb underneath my palm.

It was very comforting, and soon I was able to speak again. "The Lycaons freed Morianne and stole artifacts from the palace that helped her... Morianne took me. She brought me here, to this reality, so she could use me to summon the Dark King Lycaon."

"What like... Lycaon himself?" Lucas asked.

"The one and only... the Dark Lord of their stupid cult," I confirmed bitterly. Just saying his name left a bad taste in my mouth.

"And... how... how did she intend to do that? With you? And why here? Why not back in your reality?" Lucas fired questions rapidly at me.

It was a bit overwhelming, but I answered them one at a time as best I could. "Morianne kept me prisoner here. She said she needed my magic and my blood. So she figured she’d use the magic I had and the blood of your Sasha, who didn’t have any powers anymore–all her blood. She wanted to drain her dry."

Lucas looked sick, which was exactly how I felt. The thought of Morianne bleeding Sasha to death–any version of me–turned my stomach. What kind of monster would do such a thing?

"And then?" Lucas asked bravely, though his voice shook a little.

"And then... she was going to use that whole ritual to put the Dark Lord Lycaon’s soul... in... in your baby," I gulped, putting my free hand over my swollen belly. The idea of that evil contaminating an innocent child was horrific.

"Shit." The vampire in the corner stuttered and the doctors stopped moving.

"Shit," Lucas echoed, his face draining of color. I could feel his hand trembling in mine.

"Yeah. Shit," I agreed. What else was there to say? The whole situation was profoundly fucked up.

We sat in silence for a minute, processing the disturbing revelations. I could tell Lucas was deeply shaken, as was I. The thought that I had almost been sacrificed–that poor Sasha nearly had–to resurrect some ancient evil was a lot to handle.

"I won’t let that happen," Lucas finally said, steel in his voice. "Morianne is locked up. She can’t hurt you or the baby now."

I squeezed his hand gratefully. Just hearing the determination in his voice made me feel safer. "What will they do with her?" I asked.

Lucas’ jaw tightened. "She’ll face justice for her crimes." His eyes flashed with anger. "She will pay."

I nodded, comforted that Morianne would get what she deserved. As long as she was locked away, she couldn’t try to summon Lycaon again, couldn’t try to sacrifice me or an innocent child.

"I know you said that other Lucas rejected you," Lucas continued gently. "But you have my word that I will do everything in my power to keep you and the baby safe."

Unexpected tears pricked my eyes. After being alone and rejected by my Lucas, his compassion meant everything. "Thank you," I whispered.

He gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. "We’re in this together now."

I offered him a small, trembling smile. For the first time since arriving here, I felt a spark of hope. Lucas and I barely knew each other, brought together by strange circumstances. But with him by my side, I believed I could get through this. I wasn’t alone anymore.

But even that assurance didn’t stop the nightmares that would find me every night.

I was cloaked in fear, haunted by the memory of Morianne’s cold, calculating eyes. I could see her gloved hands reaching for me. I could hear her voice promising me the power I never wanted and the glory I didn’t need.

She was outraged when I refused her offer. She’d promised to make me more powerful than my wildest dreams, and I knew nothing good would come from anything she had to offer.

Now, even in my dreams, I couldn’t escape her influence.

But there was something else, too... something darker, more primal, and even more tempting in a way that Morrianne could never be.

I dreamed of Lycaon.

In my most vivid nightmares, he was towering and powerful, even as a shadowy figure. His eyes glowed like embers, and his voice rumbled like thunder. He spoke to me in a language I didn’t understand, but somehow, I knew what he wanted.

He wanted me and the child I carried. I knew there was more to it than simply a desire for power, or a twisted form of sacrifice. I could feel his need for revenge.

I woke up every morning covered in sweat, my heart racing. Lucas would hold my hand, whispering soothing words. When I described them to him, I could tell he was just as disturbed by my nightmares as I was.

As the days passed, I tried to focus on the present. I was grateful to have this Lucas by my side, and the doctors were taking good care of me and the baby. I realized that in this reality, I had a chance at a different life, one that wasn’t defined by rejection and loss.

I wanted to hold onto and keep this life for as long as possible. But then I felt her... this world’s Sasha tugging on the corner of my mind, wanting to get back to the body, the baby, and the mate that belonged to her.
