Chapter 1041: Chapter 104 : Helpless
“Where does Donovan live?” I hissed into the phone.
“Oh... I have his address somewhere....”
I heard papers shuffling around as Amanda searched for the address. I started pacing back and forth.
“Ah, I’ve got it.” She rattled off the address and his apartment number.
I froze. “That’s a very rough part of the city.”
“I know. Go get her,” Amanda pleaded.
I sighed and flopped down in my chair again. Sasha was in danger, but from Amanda’s report, it sounded like Donovan had a whole crew of ruffians working for him. I didn’t want to put her in more danger.
I picked up the phone and made another call.
“Brady, I need you to clear your schedule.”
“Uh... okay. What’s going on?”
“Sasha was abducted by Donovan and we’re going to get her back.”
“Say no more! I’m ready at the drop of a dime.”
“Good. I’ll send Ian to pick you up and he’ll bring you to Donovan’s address. Be ready for a fight. He has a lot of goons.”
“You know I’m ready for a fight. See you there.”
The address was on the other side of town. I sent Ian for Brady and caught a cab to Donovan’s street.
I followed Amanda’s directions to a rundown apartment building. The siding was falling off, and the paint on the trim was chipping. Only a few lights were on in the building, foggy against dust-caked windows.
I grimaced. How could anyone live there?
Ian pulled up in the town car and Brady popped out.
“Okay, how are we doing this?”
I put my fingers to my lips. “I need to make sure Sasha is here before we do anything.”
Brady covered his mouth and nodded.
I closed my eyes and focused on the mate bond, reaching out with my senses through the bond.
It didn’t take long for me to feel the quiver of our connection. Sasha was in there, and she was upset. I put a hand on my heart, promising myself that I’d kill them for upsetting her.
“She’s in there.”
“What apartment number?”
“Amanda said it was apartment three, in the basement.”
“Alright, what’s the plan?”
“I’m guessing Donovan has his goons on guard somewhere inside. We’ll need to be prepared for a confrontation. The goal is to get to Sasha and get her out before Donovan realizes we’re there. I don’t want to give him the chance to do anything to her.”
“Roger that. We’re not letting him get away.”
“Agreed.”
I reached out to Sasha with the mind-link.
‘Sasha, Brady and I are coming for you. Is there anything you can tell us about where you’re being held?’
‘Lucas!? I thought I sensed you. It is so good to hear your voice.’
‘You know I wouldn’t leave you in Donovan’s clutches. What do you see? How many guards are there?’
There was a long pause. I could still sense Sasha. She was probably assessing the situation.
‘Donovan is here. He is the one who took me, and he has about seven guards working for him.’
I looked at Brady. “Donovan and seven goons–that should be doable between the two of us.”
‘Lucas, be careful. It isn’t just Donovan. Stone is here too. I think they’ve been working together all along.’
I ground my teeth and snarled under my breath.
“What is it?” Brady asked.
“Stone Hamline is still involved. I should have killed him.”
Brady grinned. “Well, tonight, you might get your chance.”
I nodded. “Alright, let’s move in, quietly. I want to surprise these thugs so they can’t sound the alarm.”
“Wait... didn’t Amanda say she called the police? Shouldn’t we wait for them? What if they show up and think we’re with Donovan and Stone?”
I scoffed and shook my head. “No way! As soon as they hear sirens, they’ll split, and they could do something to Sasha in the meantime. Besides, if the cops show up, a quick call from Xander will clear it all up. I’d rather be on that end than have Donovan and Stone escape again.”
“Good point.” Brady nodded.
“Let’s go.”
I ran up the apartment steps and tested the front door. It wasn’t locked. I pushed the door open carefully so it wouldn’t creak. The rusty hinges chugged. Brady and I slipped down the main hall, and I nodded to the stairs that led to the basement.
“Here we go,” I whispered to myself.
We raced down the stairs, running into Donovan’s thugs at the bottom.
Their eyes glowed in the darkness and they growled.
“Oh, this is going to be fun.” Brady chuckled.
In the dark, I saw his eyes gleam and his fangs flash. He dove into the wall of muscle. I smiled to myself and pounced on the nearest guy. He jumped around like a bucking bronco. I wrapped my arm around his throat, tightening on his windpipe.
He growled and flailed against me, but he couldn’t grab a hold of me. He ran into a wall, slamming my arm and leg against the stone.
I growled but maintained my grip, constricting his airway.
He stumbled forward and fell to his knees. He gasped and wheezed until he collapsed on the floor, unconscious.
I jumped up and launched back into the fight. Brady and I quickly took out the thugs. They were no match for me and a vampire.
“Well, I’m a little disappointed,” Brady admitted, dusting himself off. He glanced around at the incapacitated shifters.
“It’s not over yet. These guys were just the warm-up. We still need Stone and Donovan.”
Only one door in the basement had a number three on it. I raced to the door and burst through.
“Sasha!”
She gasped. I saw her sitting in a chair, Donovan behind her with a heavy hand on her shoulder. I scanned her quickly. She didn’t look injured. There wasn’t a scrape or a bruise on her.
“Where is he?” I snarled at Donovan.
“Where is who?” Donovan narrowed his eyes.
“Stone. I know he was here. Where did he go?”
Donovan shook his head. “Long gone. You’ll never catch him.”
“Brady, take Donovan into custody.”
Donovan held up one hand. “Careful.” I saw his fingers tense on Sasha’s shoulder.
I growled.
“Don’t worry, Lucas, he’s just bluffing,” Brady said.
“I am not!”
“Brady’s right, Lucas. Donovan won’t hurt me,” Sasha chimed in.
“Fine. Take him, Brady!”
Brady nodded and raced across the room. He snatched Donovan’s hand off Sasha and pinned it behind his back.
Donovan cried out. “Okay, okay, you don’t need to be so rough.”
“Sure, I do.” Brady hauled Donovan out of the apartment.
I ran to Sasha and broke the ropes tying her to the chair. She jumped up and put her arms around me.
“Thank you for coming.”
I hugged her close and buried my nose in her delicious, silky hair. “Are you okay? What did they do to you?”
“Chloroform. I meant what I said. Neither of them will hurt me. They still think they can manipulate the orbs for us to have a happily ever after.”
I frowned and my stomach cringed.
“That’s never going to happen!”
“I know.” Sasha nuzzled against me. She sighed, and I could feel the strong emotions rolling off of her. I needed to get her home, to safety.
“Lucas, Donovan knows where Morianne is. You need to talk to him.”
I nodded and led her out of the basement. I kept my arms around her. After this, I never wanted to let her out of my sight.
Ian had driven around the block a few times. He was back to pick us up. I got Sasha into the car and wrapped a blanket around her.
“Ian will take care of you. I’m just going to see what I can get out of Donovan.”
She nodded and smiled humorlessly. I kissed her cheek and squeezed her hand.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get him to talk. Soon, we’ll have Marianne and Stone, and we’ll get our baby back.”
She nodded again and hugged the blanket around her.
Brady had Donovan shoved up against the wall of his apartment building.
“What do you want from me, man?” Donovan asked.
Brady slammed his face into the broken siding.
“Sasha tells me you know where Morianne is,” I said.
“Pfft. The bitch is lying!”
Brady pulled Donovan from the wall and I slapped him across the face. He groaned, his head snapping to the side.
“What was that?”
“I don’t know anything.”
“That’s funny, I don’t believe you. Now, start talking.”
“What are you going to do to me? Nothing compared to what Morianne will do, that’s what.”
I scoffed. Leaning in, I grabbed Donovan’s face and made him look into my eyes.
“You don’t know what I’m capable of. But I promise, if you don’t start talking, you’re going to find out.”
Donovan tightened his lips and held his tongue.
Police sirens sounded and several cops flooded onto the street. There was no point in interrogating Donovan more. He’d be sent to the palace, and Xander would do the rest.
“Hand him over to the cops. I want to get Sasha home, anyway.”
When we got back to the mansion, Sasha went straight to the bathroom to shower. I sat in the bathroom and listened as she told me everything that happened and everything Stone and Donovan said to her.
“They are definitely our links to Morianne, then,” I agreed.
“Maybe Xander and Lena will have better luck with him,” she suggested.
“That was my thinking.”
When she stopped the water, I handed her a fluffy robe. Sasha sighed and wrapped herself up in it. I scooped her into my arms.
She giggled and leaned against me. “What are you doing?”
“You’ve been through enough for one day. Let me take care of you.”
I saw a moment of hesitation in her eyes. Then Sasha put her arm around me and laid all her weight on me. Her smile faded slightly and I could see the true depth of her sadness.
“This is going to get worse before it gets better,” she muttered.
“What do you mean?”
I carried her into the bedroom and lay her on the bed.
“Morianne wants my powers. I don’t have them. If we have nothing to give her, then....”
She sniffled, and I saw her eyes glass over with tears.
“Sasha.”
I whispered her name.
I crawled onto the bed with her and pulled her into my arms, holding her against my chest.
“It doesn’t matter what Morianne wants. She’s going to help us. We will compel her in whatever way we can.”
“She’s so stubborn! In the other reality, she chose imprisonment and treason over doing what Xander and Lena asked her to do. She won’t help us get our baby back if she doesn’t get what she wants!”
Sasha broke down in sobs. Her body shook in my arms. I kissed her head and rocked her, comforting her as best I could until she cried herself to sleep.
My heart broke for her. I was helpless all over again.
