Chapter 90: Chapter 90

Joel rolled his eyes at Luan’s question. "Does it matter? It’s not because I’m royalty that I enjoy doing all this socializing stuff."

"Fair enough," Luan replied, a smile on his face.

The three then awkwardly sat next to each other, not knowing what to say. Luan was bored out of his mind and just wanted it to be over with.

While Joel was very anxious, he kept clinging to the sliver of hope that he would be the one that the Emperor and Empress had chosen to become the princess’s husband.

As he kept twirling with his hair nervously and looking around, Luan started to become irritated.

"What’s your problem?" he asked.

Jasmine looked at Luan like she was offended. "Did I do something wrong?" she countered, raising an eyebrow at his rude question.

Luan just rolled his eyes and pointed at Joel. "Not you, Him."

Jasmine’s eyes widened slightly, and she chuckled. As she relaxed once more and kept gazing at her mother and his holiness.

"What do you mean, what’s my problem? Aren’t you nervous? It’s Princess Liana’s engagement announcement," Joel carefully said, while looking at Luan.

"..." Luan was speechless; it looked like either this guy was extremely timid or there was something else going on.

Well, not like he cared that much; the announcement should be made soon, as they’ve been here for a good while.

"Don’t worry about it. Just do your own thing," he stated, not minding Joel’s antics anymore as he went right back to admiring Jasmine.

Like that, time slowly passed. The three were awkwardly sitting together while enjoying the snacks. Sometimes exchanging some pleasantries.

Cling, cling.

Suddenly the sound of someone hitting a glass with a knife was heard throughout the hall, and everyone quieted down. They all knew that the only one that was allowed to do something like that was the host.

Atop a staircase stood three people: Caelius, Valessia, and Liana. "Thank you all for coming today. We will now proceed with the most important part of tonight, so could everyone please go to their designated spot?" Caelius declared.

When everyone heard that, without fuss, everyone was guided toward the place by servants that were running around making sure nothing would go wrong on this special day.

Luan, Joel, and Jasmine also went toward the spots their families were assigned.

’Finally,’ Luan thought, rolling his eyes at the over-the-top display of power from the Emperor, of course he kept it to himself. He didn’t want to be executed for something dumb like that.

Joel’s eyes widened when he saw Luan go toward the front of the hall. Where the most important and powerful people were positioned.

He went even further than Jasmine, who was clearly from the Theocracy and was the daughter of the saint. Making sure to remember his name and looks, he would try to get to know him better; it’s always good to make more connections.

Fifteen minutes later, the whole hall was dead silent with everyone’s attention focused on the imperial couple and their daughter. At the front, right below the staircase, were the other imperials situated.

The Emperor’s other wives and his other children. And behind that was Luan and the Meskevela family together with his mother’s family.

When Luan arrived there, he was hugged by his grandparents and his uncle; they would probably have questioned him extensively if not for the current situation.

Which he was very grateful for; well, it would certainly happen after this was over. Just thinking about it, Luan felt shivers run down his spine.

’Nothing I can do about it,’ he thought with a shrug. After his grandparents let go of him, they also turned around and started paying close attention to the Emperor’s next words.

Those words would change the delicate balance between all the countries drastically, depending on who the groom would be.

The whole hall waited silently with bated breaths until finally the Emperor cleared his throat. "I, Caelius Alderon, thank you all for coming to this joyous occasion," he started his speech.

"I’m sure you all must have a packed schedule, so I won’t take too much of your time. We will in a moment announce the engagement, and then you all can enjoy the food and drinks we have prepared for you all."

Then Valessia stepped forward, "And after that we will invite some people personally, so please be patient and await your turn. If you haven’t been selected this time, we are very sorry, but we won’t be able to receive you today then," she added.

Then the two looked at each other and at Liana, and they both stepped back and handed her an envelope with the crest of the Alderon plastered on the back, making sure everyone could see it.

Liana stood at the front now, all the eyes aimed at her. Some people were praying it was them, while others just wanted to admire her beauty from afar.

Luan stared at her with a grin on his face; in a moment she would become his fiancée. Ah, how lucky he was.

Joel, on the other hand, had both his hands clasped together in front of his head and was rapidly reciting prayers, hoping he was the man they had decided on.

"The one who will receive this envelope is my fiancée, so please, after you receive it, come stand beside me so that Mother and Father can announce the rewards you will receive," Liana declared.

Then something appeared in front of her, cloaked in ethereal robes, with a pure-white mask in place of a human face. An ethereal-looking human appeared.

Liana gracefully handed it the envelope, and then the ethereal figure turned around and slowly started floating toward the one who was to become Liana’s fiancé.

When Luan heard her words, he was stunned. Rewards? Weren’t they going to start the Imperial Academy in a couple of days? What kind of rewards could they offer?

OR maybe they were already going to announce the rewards, like the noble title and the territory, and only expect them to start after finishing the academy. Or at least that’s what he hoped for; if he had to manage a territory while attending the academy, that would be terrible.
