Chapter 115: Chapter 115

After a last desperate charge of the remaining monsters, everyone heaved a sigh of relief, some soldiers falling on their asses, letting go of all the tension and adrenaline that had built up during the battle.

Luan sat in his chair uneasily, staring at the edges of the forest. He had a really bad feeling about this wave, but for now he could rest a little. After all, they had beaten this massive wave. With zero casualties.

A triumphant smile on his face, Luan nodded to himself, satisfied with his performance. Dimitri and the other leaders also nodded, looking over all the soldiers that were huffing and puffing from exhaustion.

"We did it!" Dimitri loudly exclaimed while raising his sword into the air.

"Yeah!" All the soldiers shouted back, smiles plastered on their faces; not only had they killed all those monsters, there wasn’t a single death.

Morale was at an all-time high, and everyone looked in the general’s direction, and they saw him seated there in a dignified position, and they all saluted him simultaneously, some while they lay on the ground.

Others, while seated, and some even with a lot of effort, stood up once more and bowed deeply. Without him it would have been impossible to accomplish such an astonishing result.

Luan nodded at them all and then closed his eyes and leaned back into the chair. Even though he had this weird feeling in his gut, he couldn’t see anything in the forest, so it was better to just fully relax and recharge; if anything happened, he could deal with it then.

’This is insane; I hope the protect the fortress is complete with this. I’ll try and hunt the ogre king tomorrow after a couple of hours of rest,’ Luan mused to himself.

Slowly all the soldiers were struggling to get back up after collapsing. But after a while they were all back up and started to walk toward the entrance of the fortress, which had been opened again. The healers were healing the mages who had exhausted all their mana.

Like that, everyone made their way back into the fortress except all the leaders; they approached Luan, who was still just seated in his chair with his eyes closed.

Trying to recover as fast as possible.

"Uhm, general, what now?" Dimitri timidly said, his eyes darting around, a similar uneasy feeling running throughout his body.

Luan opened a single eye, and when he saw all the leaders standing in front of him, he sat upright and looked at them all.

"Go rest now; after such a battle, the body needs nutrients and rest. I’ll keep an eye out here, and if anything happens, I’ll alert you all," Luan casually remarked, closing his eyes once more and leaning into the chair again.

The leaders looked at one another for a couple of seconds before Raymond and Amalia sighed and made their way into the fortress as well.

Dimitri and the other leaders followed behind them. The general was the leader after all; they had to listen to his orders even if they didn’t agree with them.

"Why is he pushing himself so much?" Dimitri whispered to Karo, a well-built young man with short blue hair.

"I have no idea. But I’m pretty sure we will never be able to understand the stress and pressure he is under. With so many lives on the line, a single wrong decision would be the difference between life and death," he replied, glancing one last time at the lounging general before they also entered the fortress and made their way to the cafeteria to eat.

After they all sat down with their plates, the leaders looked at each other, the worry evident on all their faces.

"Why do you think he stayed outside?" Amalia inquired, making sure none of the soldiers could hear them.

But that probably was never going to be a problem; they were all rambunctiously feasting, and the leaders also chose a table all the way in the corner away from them.

"No idea, but I have a bad feeling about today," Dimitri honestly said, stuffing his face with monster meat.

After only eating vegetables and potatoes for a long time, his aging body wasn’t what it used to be anymore; he needed the nutrients in meat to be able to stay a leader and be functional on the battlefield.

So only now could he allow himself to eat it; otherwise, he would become a liability to the general, and that would be his greatest shame.

Amalia and the others slightly raised their eyebrows when they saw Dimitri eating monster meat, but they didn’t comment on it. It was his business what he did and didn’t do; right now they didn’t have the leeway to criticize each other like that.

"Bad feeling, what do you mean, Dimitri?" Raymond asked, staring straight into Dimitri’s eyes.

"Didn’t you see the grave look on the general’s face after we had just beaten that massive wave of monsters? It looked like he was staring at the edge of the forest like he expected something else to come out as well," Dimitri explained his theory.

Glancing around the cafeteria to make sure no one was listening to their conversation.

The other leaders gasped audibly when they heard his words. That’s right. They hadn’t paid any attention to it at first, but now that Dimitri had pointed it out, it made much more sense.

Even though Luan had nodded at all the soldiers, there was no triumphant or even happy expression on his face.

"So do you think this was only a part of the wave?" Amalia then inquired, shocked at the words that came out of her own mouth.

"I have no idea, but I think we shouldn’t relax too much. So eat well and make sure you are always on standby and alert," Dimitri stated.

All the leaders nodded, their minds racing with possibilities. If this was only a part of the wave, there would surely be a lot of deaths.

The worry on each of their faces was evident, and even the celebrating soldiers started to pick up on the somber atmosphere coming from the corner.

When the leaders saw that, they quickly ate their food and left the cafeteria. They couldn’t afford to lower the morale based on their suspicions.

If another wave was going to appear, they needed to keep the morale high.
