Chapter 70: Chapter SEVENTY

I can’t keep my eyes off her. And annoyingly, off him too. My jaw tightens and I flash piercing gazes at the two of them. 

We didn’t get to meet later today and tonight was not what nor how I expected us to see again. 

But of course Kate’s supposed ’dinner’ involved Hazel. Who else do I know that she knows that has been within these walls?

I should’ve gotten the hint since day one when she told me. Now I have to spend a few hours pretending to be interested in this conversation and whatever Kaiden is blabbing about. I hold a glass and pour myself some liquor. While the gentlemen are allowed to drink alcoholic drinks, Kate and her friend aren’t. 

I roll my eyes for what seems like the tenth time this evening. I’d rather have Liam annoy my life than listen to another word that comes out of this human’s mouth. 

I’m pissed. Sighting him with her ruined my mood. What the fuck are they doing together?

Why on earth did I not realise that they hadn’t ended whatever was going on between them? I mean I saw him that night during the school dinner but considering he didn’t even consider to text after she nearly drowned throughout the days she spent here, I figured it was over between them and he must’ve been at the congratulations dinner for other reasons. 

Hazel laughs, breaking my reverie. I raise a brow. I dazed out of this conversation long time ago but there’s absolutely nothing Crest will say that would be that funny. Unless it’s an inside joke between she and Kate and they’re laughing at him. 

My blood boils. 

A chuckle slips out of my mouth. I laughed for a different reason. Annoyance. 

The room becomes quiet. I don’t bother to understand why. I lead a half full tumbler to my mouth and have a sip. 

My throat burns as I swallow. I’d choose this sting in my throat to the sight before me any day. My attention diverts to Hazel and Kaiden seated adjacent Kate and I. Kate’s hand make it’s way to my thigh and she grips it. 

I don’t bother to look at the movement of her hand on my leg, I can feel it, rather, my eyes are on our guests. 

"Why the sudden silence?" I ask, taking another gulp. 

"Kaiden asked you something." Kate says, looking at me. 

Interesting. 

"I mentioned how you’re not a full time professor despite being one and how you have various investments and he was interested to know more." I sigh the moment Kate was done speaking. 

Calling out my actual job and what I do would be epic right now. I’m a Mafia boss and killer who runs multiple cartels as well as very successful hotels, clubs, casinos and pubs. My family also owns wine factories and other decent restaurants with mini branches. But the only good thing to mention that’ll freak him out and make him uneasy till he leaves are the words ’I’m a past assassin and I kill people for money. That explains why I’m a mere professor who could afford this house. Those students are my prey.’ 

A menacing gaze with that sentence will do the trick. And a subtle half grin. 

"As much as I’d love to dive into a conversation listing my establishments, I’d rather not bore you all. Maybe another time, say, just the two of us, Crest?" I muster as politely as I could. I draw my hand holding my glass to my lips and drink out of the content. If he’s smart enough, he’ll get the hint that I’m not interested in small talk. 

And if he doesn’t, there’s no harm there, after all, he’s a blonde. 

No offence. 

Kaiden returns the smile. "I await such conversation with you." 

I stop myself from laughing. He didn’t get it. I hide the curl of my lips with my glass. Hazel shoots me a glare. See? Even she got it. 

"Let’s talk about something else, preferably something interesting." Kaiden requests, breaking the silence. 

"I’m sure you find playing a bagpipe interesting. Or spending an hour watching a boring mime." I murmur under my breath. 

All eyes sway my way and Kate squeezes my thigh. I guess I was louder than I thought. A man can’t help his frustration sometimes. "My apologies, a spoken thought." 

"Right." Kaiden says skeptically then averts my his gaze from me. 

If I chip into their conversation more, it’ll end up with a childish banter and inappropriate responses to his words, much of which will be vulgar, so I will be the bigger person and stay quiet. After all, listening is my forte. 

"What’s wrong? You seem to be in a bad mood." Kate whispers in my ears, moving close to me. 

He puts me in a bad mood. His presence is annoying!!

That’s because he’s with Hazel. On a normal day, you wouldn’t bother, rings in my head. That’s true, yet doesn’t change how I feel. 

"Please excuse me, I have to use the bathroom." Hazel says, standing up. I’m glad that got Kaiden’s hand off her waist but the temptation to shoot his arm so he never touches her again is strong. 

Kate attempts to stand. "No, it’s okay. I’ll find my way." Hazel interrupts. From her tone, I can tell she doesn’t want to leave Kaiden alone with me. She doesn’t know what I’m capable of but good choice. 

I think Kate got the hint. "Okay, it’s past the last two doors to the left. Take your phone with you. Just in case." She points in the direction Hazel should follow. 

Hazel has been here before. I doubt she’ll get lost but my innocent, little fiancé doesn’t know that. 

"I will. Thanks." Hazel grabs her purse and flashes Kate a smile before walking away. She didn’t even look at me. That makes my jaw clench. I may have been an asshole to her acquaintance earlier, but I have been silent all night to give all of them a perfect, undisrupted evening. 

I follow her with my eyes till her presence wasn’t in sight anymore. 

I avert my gaze to Kaiden, then Kate. Kate helps herself to an appetizer on the center table and Kaiden is quiet. 

It’s an awkward thing being here but I appreciate the silence. I drown the remnants in my glass down my throat. Fuck this, I’m going after her.
