Chapter 69: Chapter SIXTY NINE
- HAZEL -
I’m standing outside the familiar mansion I’ve grown accustomed to aside from home. Getting out of the car with a man by my side, I take a deep breath.
Kate’s words when she poured her eyes out to me earlier today replays in my head;
Please Hazel, help me take my mind off things. Everything is so choking.
My family, my soon to be marriage, school.... just come tonight with Kaiden and let’s have a good time.
Kate needs this so here I am. I didn’t know how to tell her that I wouldn’t be with Kaiden anymore so I’m doing this for her. I’m sure the least she would’ve wanted to hear was my breakup in that state. I sigh.
I’ve been so occupied that I forgot to leave him. Even if I wasn’t occupied, how would I have broken it to her that I dumped him when she told me about this dinner long when I was hospitalised? The least I could’ve done, if I actually proceeded to end things with Kaiden, was wait till after the dinner. She would approve of that.
I give a long gaze at Killian’s mansion.
My lips form a line. This should be an interesting night.
"Are you ready to go in?" Kaiden asks as gently as ever, putting my arms in his. I don’t feel anything for him anymore. I feel so sick to my stomach about three things.
One, being the fact that she just told me her marriage is choking.
Two, being the fact that I’m here with someone I once liked.
The third, being the fact that I won’t back off from Killian. Not now. Not ever. Not when we can be so much. I’ve stalled for too long. Way too long. And as much as I love Kate.... I won’t let go of my happiness for her. In a world where I can be anything, I chose to be selfish, just this once.
I fake a wry smile, looking at Kaiden. When did I stop being overly attracted and wooed by him? Must it have happened during the congratulations dinner? When I found out he wasn’t the one who gave me that gift? Certainly, one gift can’t terminate feelings completely. "Yes. Let’s go, Kaiden." I say, halting my thoughts.
The fact that Kaiden is not reluctant to attend this dinner, and he’s actually happy being here with me makes this worse. I shake these thoughts out of my head.
Tonight is not about me but her. I will focus on giving her the best experience and my undivided attention.
Unless I sight the colour grey. A smile forms across my lips. It’s a very attractive colour. Could be my new favourite.
I clear my throat.
Walking to the front door is the two of us, Kaiden and I. I sight Kate by the entrance. She looks overly eager to welcome us. Tonight, I’ll be pretending like I don’t know my way around a place that I’ve been in more than twice. I won’t say I’m accustomed to getting around every room fully, but I do know my way around certain parts.
I lean in for a hug the moment I stand in front of her. "If I had known you would be so casually dressed, I would’ve worn something different. Something less extra." I whisper in her ears with a smile. This girl actually got me to wear a dinner dress and Kaiden a suit while she’s putting on casual black shorts and a plain, light blue shirt.
"Oh honey, I love seeing you all dolled up." She pulls away from me and stretches her hand to Kaiden.
Kaiden takes her, returning the handshake.
"It’s a pleasure to have you here. Thank you for taking care of my friend." Kate says, her eyes sore. Despite her positive display, I can tell she’s been crying. Fatigue and stress is written all over her face. Plus, she’s not wearing makeup and her red acne marks are nearly visible.
"Please, the pleasure is mine." Kaiden replies. He tugs me closer to him with a hand via my waist. "And how can I not, with this damsel? I got lucky." He lets go of her hand. That implies that he’s taking care of me well, which he is.
I giggle nervously. Oh dear, if only he knows I’ll be leaving his fine ass soon, his words will change.
"Shall we go in? Where are my manners!" Kate slaps her forehead and she and I share a laugh. She pushes the door open and gestures us to go in. Kaiden and I make our way through the door then wait for her to join us. Now she’s leading us inside to the living room. The warmth of the house grazes my skin and I inhale. My eyes roll in my socket momentarily. I can perceive him. I love that I can.
Killian walks out, making his way into the living room from the other end. He’s casually dressed in white tees and sweatpants yet he looks awesome. As always.
His eyes lands on me and a smile forms on his face. That smile fades away when he looks at my side.
He has sighted Kaiden, alright. I notice his jaw clench. Apart from that, no aggressiveness was noticed in his behaviour.
That wasn’t as bad as I had imagined it to be. So far, the encounter is normal.
"Please, make yourself comfortable." Kate says, pointing at the sofa.
Kaiden let’s me sit down first before joining me. "You’re too kind." He says, flashing Kate a smile.
"I will go and get the appetisers. Give me a minute." Kate says with a polite smile and walks away.
The moment she left, the atmosphere in the room changed. It became tense. No one has said a word and that adds to the tension in the room. Killian sits on the single sofa right angled to the one Kaiden and I are at, with an angry expression on his face.
I guess this is where the start of the spicy night begins.
