Chapter 57: Chapter FIFTY SEVEN
- KILLIAN -
She’s not here with me. I desperately hoped that she would be. I guess a confession didn’t really mean anything.
I dip my hand inside the glass bowl full of popcorn on my bed and feed myself to it. I’m sitting lazily on my bed while watching a series. I decided to pause everything I had going on just to meet with her yet I ended up alone.
I’m not pissed, I just realise how down bad I am for that chic called Hazel.
I pick up the remote to change to the next episode. By my side on the bed is the flash drive. When I arrived, I was conflicted between working or relaxing and I chose relaxation.
I guess I’ll be making myself invisible for now till the dinner. I need to give her space to access her thoughts and think about what I said. It’s just a matter of time.... I hope.
After now, being the good, gentle man, if she doesn’t accept me... I drop more popcorn in my mouth, I will try it the other way. Hazel will be mine. In every way possible and I will ensure of it. While giving her a free choice, obviously.
My eyes are glued to the TV screen, enjoying the show I’m watching on Liam’s account on netflix, of course. You didn’t think I forgot about that part, did you?
My phone screen lights up. I lower my gaze to look at it.
’I can’t sleep.’ The name above the text is Kate.
’I’m coming to your room.’ I know she’s probably behind the door texting this so I didn’t pick my phone up to reply to her. I’ll say something in person. My door pushes open and a short figure in a robe comes to sight.
Her hair is messy and she’s holding a pillow. She looks sleepy.
"For someone who can’t sleep, you seem to need it." I welcome her with those words and adjust to a side of my bed to accommodate her. I clear the other part of snack bowls and my flash drive which I dip in my back pocket. "Here." I tap the bed twice.
Kate walks sluggishly to me. "Not sleepy. Frustrated is the word. And depressingly tired." She chuckles.
There was a soft thud when her butt came in contact with my bed.
"After a brutal game, I’d be shocked if you weren’t." I fill my mouth with popcorn. "Want a snack?"
Kate looks at me. "It’s past one am in the morning." She has a brow raised.
"Is that a no?" I reply with the same tone, raising a brow.
She giggles. "Nah, fuck it. Pass it to me." Kate stretches her hand to me and I hold out the bowl of popcorn. She takes out of it. I drop it between us.
"There’s more where came from." I say, returning my focus to the screen while pointing to my other side where I arranged the snack bowls when she walked in.
"If I want more, I’ll lean over. Thanks." She says. Kate becomes quiet and stares ahead. "What are you watching?"
"Not your favourite genre." I sigh and pick up the remote. I press the ’back’ arrow button and it leads me to the section where the series description is, along with the title and ’Resume episode’ and ’Restart’ icons are.
"Okay. Definitely not my genre." She says while chewing out loudly. I can hear every crunch as she chews till it becomes silent but I’m not bothered by it. "Let’s watch together."
I press the ’ok’ button and the series continues.
Do I need to fill her in on the part she’s missed?
I lower my gaze to the side. She’s staring at the screen attentively.
I guess not.
I continue watching. I’m sure she’ll doze off in the middle of this episode. Maybe I’ll take her to her bed after she does once I’m aware not even a grenade will wake her up.
*
It’s been an hour into the series since Kate arrived. I miscalculated, she’s still up. Even more awake than before. I can’t tell if it’s a good thing or not but I’m indifferent. She seems to be enjoying the series.
Kate flinches and grips my arm. "Oh, oh!" She holds me tighter. "I knew that man was no good from the moment he showed up." Her other hand grabs a handful of chips. She sticks it in her mouth at once. Crumbs fall on my thighs.
Just great. I’m not enjoying the privacy invasion but I guess adjusting my wants to fit her needs is part of the process.
"I wonder," I say, stretching my legs while leaning me hands backwards. I fold my hands behind my head and rest on the bed stand. "Do I worry about your sudden interest in the series or the fact that eating this late is not a big deal for you anymore?" I give her a side gaze without moving. "Or you being awake by this time. Or the mess you’ve made on my bed?"
Kate glances at me then at the bed covered in crumbs of the snacks she ate. "Want me to dust it off?"
I fix my gaze on her hands. Her tips are moist and stained with food jots. She wants to dust my bed with that hand? "No thanks. I’ll change the sheets later."
She nods swiftly then averts her gaze back to the tv. She looks unbothered. Seeing her this way is relaxing. It’s the closest thing to normal she has been in a while.
A gentle smack of her lips as she suck on her fingers one by one slides into my ears.
"Go and wash your hands." I demand.
"Pause it."
"If I don’t, will you leave?"
She shakes her head. I pick up the remote and pause the series. "Take your time. I’ll put the snacks away."
"Thank you!" She gets up and runs to the bathroom. I examine my bed. It’s in desperate need of tidying. How can one person make such a mess, for Pete’s sake?!
I stand up, arrange all the empty bowls in one another and put the half empty or half full ones on my reading table. Taking my sheets off is the next thing I do without dusting my bed. This way, every bit of food will be in the sheets. I’ll have to dry clean these later today, but for now, I just need a tidy bed spread with no one eating on it.
I take my pillow cases off and rumple the sheets together then dump it in my laundry basket in my closet. I walk to a drawer where my clean sheets are arranged neatly inside with the pillow cases and take a set out. I stroll back to my bed.
Now I’m spreading my bed. My God, there should be a ’no eating in the rooms’ policy printed on a marble poster which will be hung on the wall pillars just before the stairs. Hence anyone who walks upstairs will see it and read.
I pick the pillows from the side of the bed and wear them the pillow cases. That’s when Kate comes out.
Took her long enough.
"Does this mean I don’t get to eat anymore?" She asks.
I eyed her. I don’t need to say a word because my gaze already did.
"Noted." She murmurs.
I sigh. "Maybe on a chair, but not on my bed."
"Thanks. I don’t want to get my hands dirty again."
Yes!
I nod, carefully arranging the pillows by the bed stand. I take a step back to look at my arrangement. A half smile forms on my face. I pick up the duvet from the ground and head to my closet.
I basically repeat the process again. Take the duvet cover off. Dispose it in the laundry basket and wear it new ones.
By the time I came out, Kate was already laying on my bed.
I wonder if she can’t sleep or she doesn’t want to be alone. I’m not sure if I should ask or just be quiet. Talking to people about their shitty situations isn’t really my strong suit. Especially when I was never raised that way. I never really had anyone looking out for me emotionally after my parents died. Liam did.
I took the role as his parents. He’s the one person I can actually talk to and make feel better because he relates to me so much.
"Want to continue watching?" I ask, laying the duvet on my bed.
"Mhm." She pulls the duvet over her legs.
I pick the remote and climb the bed and lay down by her side, leaving some space between us. Kate doesn’t seem to have a problem with that.
I press the ’ok’ button to play.
My mind isn’t on the series anymore. I need to sleep.
A body curls up to me, wrapping half of my body. I can feel the warmth caused by her body.
"You’re not mad at me anymore?" I ask calmly.
"No. Not anymore." She murmurs. I lower the volume. She’s tired. It’s obvious in her voice.
I don’t know what to say.
"Can I ask you something?"
Even if I say ’no’, she’ll go ahead anyway. "Ask."
"How available will you be next week?"
"That depends on a lot of things. I can’t say."
"Can you free a day for a hang out? Just us and some friends."
’Some friends’ really devalues the statement ’just us’.
"What do you have planned?"
"A date kind of thing. Here."
My brow raises. "You’re okay with inviting people here?"
"Mhm. I kind of need to drop the paranoia. I need to feel comfortable, no?" She turns to face me. Kate leans up and presses her face on my neck. I can feel her breath fan my skin.
"Anything you want, chipmunk."
She giggles. "Thank you."
"Tell me when you need me to be here. I will clear my schedule to spend time with you." I pause to catch my breath. Saying this part of the statement is quite hard. "And your friends." My jaw tightens. I’ve never been a fan of company. I do quite well on my own. Most times.
She wraps her arms around my tummy. I don’t want her to do that. I hate myself for accepting this but it’s not the same. I want someone else with me on my bed.
Kate yawns. Her hands come off me and she turns to the side. "You’re not going to be around tomorrow, right?"
"Mhm." I turn off the TV. She’s not watching.
"When will I see you around in school?"
"Why? Miss me?" I tease. She elbows my stomach. Too soon, got it.
"I’m still a teeny bit pissed off at you."
Understandable. "I deserve that."
"Like hell you do!"
"To answer your question, during the school dinner." That being said, "Congratulations Kate." I say and lean in to hug her from behind. "For winning."
"Thank you." She whispers. She sounds sleepy. I shouldn’t keep her up much longer.
"We didn’t throw a celebration. Not even a mini one. I’ll arrange something."
"You don’t have to."
"Please, allow me to make you feel special."
Kate giggles. "Whatever you say. Goodnight."
I take out my hand from below her body gently and lean my head closer to look at her. Her eyes are closed.
"Goodnight." I whisper back to her. I shift back to my side and sigh. I reach my hand out to my bed table and pull the bottom drawer open. There’s a file there. It’s the printed spare copy of every player’s schedule with detailed information about each player and their strong points that I sent to Liz. I finally have a reason to dispose of it.
I raise it up lazily and scroll through the pages. I stumble accross Hazel’s
part. Despite her inability to participate, I wrote a section for her too. I stare at the school passport photo of her.
I’m making a mistake going after her but it’s a mistake worth doing.
