Chapter 127: Office Re-Discovery [Christian POV]
I followed behind Leslie, staying two steps behind. She increased her pace to distance herself from me even more.
She ran like a little rabbit, turning at the end of the hall to run to the adjacent office. I watched her with dark eyes, looking at her like a hunter towards his prey.
Her tight pencil skirt only made me even more distracted. The silhouette of her bottom matched what I had pictured last night perfectly.
Before I knew it, I was standing in front of her office door, blankly staring at it. When I realized where I was, I clenched my fist angrily.
No! You still don’t know if this was some sort of trap! It’s possible that she could be related to the accident.
I scolded myself as I made my way to my office. There was no reason for me to be so obsessed with her, especially when I didn’t have my memories.
Once I sat down behind my desk, I looked at all of the documents that were waiting for my approval. Most of them were reports from the Sophia season launch.
The first document I picked up was probably the most important. It was the final profit report that stated the sales vs. cost breakdown of all of the pieces.
My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw how much each piece of jewelry sold for. These sales numbers would break every record Sophia ever had in sales, even during its best years.
"This single season even made enough profit to carry Sophia through another two years of business. This is incredible!" I muttered with shaking hands.
I quickly flipped through the rest of the documents to figure out who it was that led the event this year-- they deserved a huge bonus for their success. However, as I flipped through the various documents, I realized that in the places where the project head’s name was supposed to be, it was Blake’s name instead.
Did I really make Blake handle the Sophia season launch? Surely not...
I lifted the phone on my desk and called his number.
"Good morning, Sir," he quickly answered on the other side.
"Hey, Blake. Were you the one leading the Sophia season event? I was just looking through the reports and couldn’t find a name for the person in charge," I said.
As soon as I woke up from my accident in the hospital, I let Blake and Jonathan know about my condition and memory loss.
"Oh, no, sir. My name was just put on all of the documents to hide the real mastermind," he laughed lightly.
I suddenly became very curious.
"Why would I try to cover up the head of the project? Shouldn’t they be getting all of the recognition for the success? I mean, this season launch was incredible!" I said.
Blake let out another chuckle on the other end, "Because the person in charge of the event is Miss Moresi."
"What?!" I exclaimed in shock.
I made her the head of such an important project?
But after the initial surprise, I was even more impressed with the results. There was undeniable evidence that the event was the most successful one in Sophia’s history.
So she’s got brains too...
Before I hung up the phone, Blake’s voice rang out once more. "Sir, shall I serve the usual lunch today?"
Usual lunch? Why would he ask me something like that?
"Uh, yes, please," I replied, a little confused why he would ask me something like this. After hanging up the phone, I glanced down at the Sophia reports once more before glancing at the hidden door that led to the office next door.
"I can’t ignore her forever," I sighed, unsure of how I wanted to face her.
After figuring out that we had a very intimate relationship only made things more complicated for me. While I could admit that she was very sexy and beautiful, that wasn’t love.
Did I ever love her? Or was she just a fling?
My thoughts suddenly got disrupted by another phone call. Zach’s name flashed on the screen of my cell phone.
"What’s up?" I asked, picking up the phone.
"Morning, Christian. I have just finished gathering the information you requested earlier. I’ll send you the timeline of events of the night of the auction house, but the last person you were with should have been the second Miss Moresi."
My grip on the phone tightened.
Leslie? That’s quite the coincidence.
"Send over the list. Thank you for going through the trouble of finding this information," I replied, grateful for his services.
"No problem at all. I wanted to verify with multiple sources before I sent it over, which is why it took so long. Let me know if there’s anything else you need."
I thanked him again and hung up the phone. If Leslie was the last person I was with, then the best person to ask what happened was her.
If she’s lying to me, I would be able to tell.
A small sound came from my computer, notifying me of a new email. It was from Zachary, depicting an hour-by-hour timeline of where I was and who I was with at the auction house that night.
I scanned it over, and sure enough, my last known location was in the VIP booth.
Let’s see what you have to say.
I picked up the phone on my desk once more, then dialed the number to the office next door. Two rings later, she picked up the phone.
"Hello?" she asked. Her voice was soothing and pleasant to my ears, momentarily distracting me from the purpose of my call.
"I wish to speak with you. Can you come to my office?" I asked. My voice came out sounding a bit fierce, which I quickly regretted.
"Oh, sure. I’ll come right away," she replied. This time her tone was softer and filled with worry.
She hung up the phone, and a few minutes later, I heard a knock on my door.
Why didn’t she just come through the pocket door?
"Come in," I said.
One of the large double doors to my office opened, and her small head poked inside.
She took a step forward and waited for my instructions, still standing a considerable distance from my desk. After glancing at me once, she kept her eyes lowered on the ground.
"Please come forward. I wanted to just say thank you for your hard work on the Sophia season launch. I just looked through the reports and have realized just how much of a success it was."
Her large doe eyes met mine as a slight blush appeared on her cheeks. She walked forward until she was standing right in front of my desk.
"Thank you for the praise. It was a wonderful experience to work on such a large project. Thank you for trusting me."
Her words were filled with gratitude, and her mouth curved into a small smile. I could easily tell that she was proud of the work that she had done and enjoyed every bit of it.
"Please remind me if there was a private agreement between us for you to work on this project. Perhaps some reward?" I asked, trying my best to understand the dynamics between us.
She looked at me. First, her eyes were filled with joy, but a moment later, I could swear I saw a look of desire. It was so fleeting that I even thought that I may have mistaken it.
I looked over at her again, and this time she looked sad.
Is she sad because of me? Did I promise her some kind of reward that she now can’t ask for because of our awkward relationship?
I hated it. I hated seeing her pained expression, but I also hated that it bothered me so much. I waited for her to reply, wondering what she would say.
"Thank you, but there’s no need for a reward. Just being able to work on a meaningful project is enough for me," she replied softly.
I raised my eyebrow, feeling a little surprised.
No reward?
"Here, at least take a look at the final reports. I’m not sure if you’ve seen any of this information," I said, holding the reports up for her.
She walked over and accepted them, glancing at them with a soft smile.
"It’s still so shocking to me that they sold for this much," she mumbled before breaking out into laughter, "Oh, this must be the pair of earrings that Morgan purchased."
Her smile was truly breathtaking.
"What’s so funny about the pair of earrings she bought?" I asked, curious.
She handed the report back to me and smiled, "Take a look yourself. Tell me if you find any of those bottom sale amounts out of place."
I glanced down and looked at the sale report, noticing that one of the earrings sold for way more than the rest.
"Did Morgan buy these?" I asked, with a slightly amused smile.
She nodded, unable to hide the amusement in her eyes, "Yes. She was so desperate to buy something all night that when these secondary earrings hit the auction, she immediately placed her max bid amount."
Although I didn’t remember being there, I could picture it in my head and chuckled. "Your sister is something else."
She nodded, "Even now, she doesn’t see any issue with what she’s done."
We both had a nice laugh, and the atmosphere between us got a little less awkward. I couldn’t pull my eyes away from her beaming smile.
She’s exceptionally beautiful when she smiles.
