Three days later.
Inside the Melted Black Ruins, the members of the Dancing Nuclear Guild’s raid team found a safe place to rest and recover.
Juan Canyun sat alone in a corner, clutching his spear, quietly watching the silly videos on the Bilibili website.
The video Juan Canyun was currently watching was one made by a user called ‘Frontline Reporter UP,’ titled ‘Holy Spirit’s Daddy’s Moments Season 7.’
This sort of video, showcasing moments when players are ‘trapped’ in the game, had become incredibly popular on Bilibili, with this particular video ranked seventh in the gaming section.
Juan Canyun watched the barrage of comments like ‘care from the troll planners’ and ‘typical plot,’ floating across the screen, paired with instances of players being entrapped, which should have made him laugh heartily.
But… Juan Canyun didn’t feel like laughing at all, because half of the material for this episode came from his own misfortunes, and the other half came jointly from the Dancing Nuclear Guild and the Abyss Temple Guild.
The Melted Black Ruins instance was truly heart-wrenching, with all sorts of unexpected traps one after another. During the three days of pioneering the ruins with the Abyss Temple and the Dancing Nuclear Guild, along with the Planar Pirates, they had produced countless clips.
‘I declare this episode is brought to you exclusively by our great Dancing Nuclear Guild.’
‘You can’t bully my little Shi Qi like this! If you use footage of my little Shi Qi again, I’m going to call the police! Hahaha *hic*’
Juan Canyun found these comments bitter to the soul, as the video was currently showing him being chased around the ruins by a rolling skull boulder.
‘Dear reporter, you need to watch your life safety when you go into the instance with the big shots from Dancing Nuclear.’
Juan Canyun, glancing at that comment, turned his gaze toward the Frontline Reporter, who was happily chatting with President Yin in the distance. Seeing the barrage comment ‘By the time we arrived at the scene, all that was left of the UP host was a tombstone,’ Juan Canyun felt a fleeting thought of stabbing him in the back.
“You seem to be enjoying yourself.”
Suddenly, Lady Calamity’s voice rang in Juan Canyun’s ear. As he looked up, he felt something being thrown at him, so he extended his hand to catch… a bottle of light green rum.
‘You have received a gift from Lady Calamity.’
Juan Canyun was a bit stunned. As he turned his head, he realized Lady Calamity was already sitting next to him, prompting him to instinctively shift a little farther away from her.
He didn’t know why this NPC always sought him out. He had never aimed to boost Lady Calamity’s favorability, yet inexplicably earned the title of her Guardian, a title with attributes and of epic proportion.
Members of his guild kept asking Juan Canyun, ‘How the heck did you get that title?’
Juan Canyun himself was utterly confused. For the three days they were pioneering the Melted Black Ruins, his role was to explore the various traps within… a task that should normally fall to the assassins and thieves.
Perhaps it was during this process that Lady Calamity, seeing his agility, had taken a liking to him?
But do NPC’s intelligence include the concept of ‘taking a liking’? Moreover, there are several other players in Dancing Nuclear better skilled than him, so it was puzzling.
“You can face a Mutated Giant Dragon and rolling boulder traps, yet you are afraid of me?” Lady Calamity asked, baffled as she watched Juan Canyun subtly move away from her.
“Is there… something you need?”
Juan Canyun replied with an option from the dialogue box, for in real life, he had a bit of social anxiety… he couldn’t even dare look strangers in the eye when speaking to them.
This mild social anxiety wasn’t relieved at all in the game. It was also the reason why Juan Canyun disliked being used as material in ‘Holy Spirit’s Daddy’s Moments’… he always felt it was embarrassing.
Talking with NPCs also made Juan Canyun a bit timid.
“I can tell you’re one of the most skilled among the Holy Spirits.” Lady Calamity shook her bottle of rum slightly, apparently wanting to clink glasses with Juan Canyun, but he had already stowed the rum she had tossed to him into his backpack.
Lady Calamity raised her glass and discovered that Juan Canyun’s wine bottle had disappeared, so she reluctantly poured herself another drink.
“Are you interested in working for me?” Lady Calamity asked directly after wiping away the liquor from the corner of her mouth.
“Haven’t I already joined your faction?”
Juan Canyun’s voice was very low, his gaze never meeting Lady Calamity’s; instead, he kept staring at the dialogue box, parroting whatever options appeared there.
“I’m talking about my pirate group, not the faction you’re referring to! What can you get from the group you belong to? I think I can offer you everything,” she said.
There was a reason Lady Calamity suddenly came to poach him–she knew that the current relationship between the plane pirates and this group of saint spirits was only based on employment, a very frail and chaotic bond.
In the battle at the Melted Black Ruins, not a single saint spirit was willing to follow her commands; the most they’d do was protect her.
Lady Calamity’s ambition didn’t stop at treating the saint spirits merely as bodyguards, especially when they were the kind that wouldn’t listen to her.
What she wanted were her confidants, those who trusted her and whom she could trust in return!
Although most saint spirits had very erratic and cunning minds, there were still a small number whose mentalities were very naive, like children around seventeen or eighteen years old.
Juan Canyun was a perfect recruitment target Lady Calamity had her eyes on–naive yet ranking among the top in strength among all saint spirits.
“What do you want?”
Clutching his long spear, Juan Canyun looked at the options that popped up in the dialogue box. There were three choices: money, equipment, and status.
But Juan Canyun wasn’t interested in these things. What he wanted was… a sense of recognition, and the thing he desired most was…
“World champion.” Juan Canyun didn’t follow the dialogue box options this time; what he yearned for the most now was the title of world champion in this season’s conflict.
This was the only thing he could use to report back to Principal Yin and Coach Song on their cultivation of him; as for saint spirit equipment and level rankings, they didn’t matter to Juan Canyun.
“World champion? What champion… do you saint spirits have some competition among yourselves?” Lady Calamity curiously asked.
“Mhm.” Juan Canyun didn’t quite know how to explain it at the moment.
“What about other things? Treasures, money, status, and even beautiful women–none of these interest you?” Lady Calamity was getting a headache, for bribing among plane pirates didn’t include any world champion titles.
Juan Canyun shook his head… The equipment he was now wearing was already at the pinnacle of what was currently available to saint spirits, perfectly forged at that, and Juan Canyun felt there was no room for improvement.
“Listen up, kid. As long as you’re with us… not just one world! Countless worlds within the star chart will submit to you, and then no matter what champion title you want, it’ll be no problem,” she said.
The moment Lady Calamity’s words ended, Juan Canyun suddenly raised his long spear… With a swing of his arm, the tail of his spear made a whooshing sound as he attacked Lady Calamity beside him.
The attack was so sudden that by the time Lady Calamity reacted, the rum in her hand had already been shattered by the butt of the spear, and even though she tried to block Juan Canyun’s attack with her arm, she was flung by the tail of his spear three meters away to the ground.
“Hey!”
But as Lady Calamity was about to yell something at Juan Canyun… the wall they had been leaning against suddenly collapsed.
Lady Calamity could only widen her eyes as a massive mutated giant dragon broke through the wall, opened its vast maw, and swallowed Juan Canyun whole.
“Even though I know these guys can resurrect after death! Still, you reptile must die!”
The sight prompted Lady Calamity to immediately draw her flintlock and pull the trigger, hitting the mutated giant dragon right in the eye. The dragon roared in pain, and the saint spirits who had been resting and chatting here just a moment ago instantly went into battle mode.
