Rosie's Games
Chapter 530 530: The Hero

Martin Lux felt his limbs grow weak when he heard the reports about what happened after the Duke closed the portals. The streets of the entire continent now knew that it was the Duke who saved them.

He was called their savior, their hero.

How could he accept this?

He felt his body tremble from anger and disappointment. In less than a day, everyone already knew about the Duke's deeds! What could this mean?

It was rather simple! Someone else intentionally spread these rumors and paid people to disseminate them far and wide. Someone is scheming behind their back and is taking advantage of this incident for their own gain!

"Someone else is trying to tarnish our name," Martin hissed. The one who spread those rumors didn't merely seek respect for the Duke. they must have aimed to ruin the reputations of the Seven Families and make them appear weak!

Someone is challenging the Seven Families!

He thought about what happened earlier.

Martin never thought that one day, not one person would even greet him when entering a room. He was born arrogant, famous, and powerful.

However, a few hours ago, he experienced being ignored not only by the masses but even by the knights guarding the halls, who didn't bother greeting him upon his arrival!

The reason for this neglect was that the Duke of Wugari somehow defeated all the demons in front of everyone before closing the portal.

Martin and Dorothy had initially gone to the other Empires to close the portals. Who would have thought that the carnage they expected upon their arrival did not occur? Instead, they saw everyone celebrating, cheering, and shouting the Duke's name! Preposterous!

"Father," Dorothy stood nearby, her head lowered as she tried to call her father. "I don't mean to interrupt, but I believe this isn't the time to act this way."

She lifted her head and stared at Martin's furious gaze. "We need to establish connections with the North," Dorothy added. "We need to improve our relations and offer them support instead of opposing them."

Her words seemed to awaken Martin. He cleared his throat and looked away. His daughter was right. He lost his composure as his plans had failed, but this didn't mean he had lost the war. Right now, he needed to calm down and focus on the future. With the Duke's name on everyone's lips, it would be challenging to oppose him.

What he could do now was to act cordial and show his support for the Duke.

"Thank you for your reminder. Please go to your room. I know you must be tired. Also... make sure your mother is safe."

"I know," Dorothy nodded. She bowed to her father before walking out of his study. The moment she left, the smile on her face vanished, replaced by disgust. How could someone be so foolish? She rolled her eyes as she began walking back to her quarters.

Just like her father, Dorothy was surprised when she saw the Duke close not just one but four portals, and he didn't do it consecutively. He shouldn't have been capable of such a feat, unless, of course, he had already regained his abilities. That would be impossible, considering he was still wandering this continent without suffering the barrier's punishments.

Stronger demons couldn't enter this place using their original bodies due to the barrier. The barrier had its own laws that could destroy anyone exceptionally powerful. For hundreds of years, demons trying to cross to this place would die the moment they arrived due to the barrier's laws.

Because of this, demons found a way to move their souls to a human vessel, but this meant they couldn't maintain their full abilities. There were also other limitations, such as the risk of destroying the body and dying with it.

Dorothy thought about the Duke once again. No matter what she thought, she couldn't find any other reason why the Duke would suddenly do this. If the barrier were to break, the Duke would be one of the people benefiting the most, as he'd regain his sealed abilities.

The Goddess was long gone. That man had no business in this continent. Was it merely loyalty? Or was it love? Dorothy couldn't understand things like this, so she chose to focus on the next part of her plan.

Her original plan involved using this opportunity to make herself famous and change the continent's narrative, but the Duke intervened and ruined her plans. Because of this, she wasn't surprised to see a shadowy figure in her room the moment she arrived.

"You failed," the voice said.

"I know," Dorothy responded. "The Duke of the North was an unpredictable variable."

"He's but a nuisance," the voice uttered. "The plan has been delayed. We need to destroy the barrier as soon as possible."

"How?" she asked. They had nobody for the Lord, and now their plans were ruined. Humans would soon know about the existence of demons.

"I am going to deal with the Duke of the North," the cloaked man uttered.

"He is immortal."

"His body would be perfect for the Lord."

Dorothy pursed her lips. They all knew about the Duke's past, and they also knew he no longer held the power he once had. However, this wasn't enough to guarantee victory.

"Be cautious," Dorothy said. She was not saying the man was weaker than the Duke, but her instincts told her everything wasn't as simple as it seemed.

The man under the cloak only let out a snort. She could feel the arrogance from his gaze under the hood.

For some reason, sweat appeared on her forehead.

For some reason, sweat appeared on her forehead. She took a step back.

"I-" Dorothy's lips trembled.

"How dare you underestimate me?" the man asked.

"I- I did not mean to say that," she immediately lowered her head, her face losing its colors as she gritted her teeth. "I apologize."

"This will be the last time you will mention this matter to me. You already failed your mission. One more mistake and I will not hesitate to end your miserable life!"
