Chapter 521 521: Portal 1

Rosalind stared at her recovering grandfather, lying on the bed. At this rate, she was already certain that he would wake up one day. However, she was uncertain when it would be.

Earlier, she had tried to use her blessing, but for some reason, it did not work. Belisarius was quick to point out that her light blessing was no longer as pure as it should be.

Obviously, she knew better than that.

Even if she absorbed demonic energy, she could still sense the purity of her light blessing. She wondered if this was more about trauma, among other things.

"Shall we get going?" Lucas uttered.

"Alright," Rosalind nodded, agreeing to leave the market so they could go back to Aster. "Are you not concerned about Wugari?" she asked.

"They can manage," Lucas said. Since earlier, he had been silent, his words sparse. Still, he was adamant about being supportive of Rosalind.

"Do you know why they would suddenly summon the portal now?" she asked.

"No."

"Isn't it a bit confusing?"

"It is," Lucas said. Then he suddenly stopped walking. "Are you scared?" he asked.

"Scared?"

"Of the portals, of the demons descending…," Lucas said.

Rosalind said nothing. She was glad that they had this conversation now rather than when they went out where Belisarius was waiting. She did not know why, but there seemed to be something going on between Lucas and Belisarius. The two must have had some sort of argument.

"No," Rosalind said.

"How about the voice?" he asked.

"Gone," Rosalind said. She was now certain that it was because of the demonic energy that she had absorbed. After absorbing so much energy, her body felt lighter and somehow more powerful.

Without saying a word, she summoned her cursed dagger which had already integrated with the black liquid that he gave her.

The weapon was pure black and it glinted against the lighting in the hallway. "I quite like this feeling…"

"The darkness?"

"Darkness?" Rosalind asked. "What darkness are you talking about?" she asked.

"Demonic energy is often associated with darkness. This—" Lucas suddenly stopped talking. He frowned. "It's coming."

Rosalind nodded. She immediately recalled the dagger and held his hand.

Without saying a word, he teleported them near the Imperial palace.

The air crackled with an ominous energy as Rosalind and Lucas materialized near the Imperial palace. The night was draped in a shroud of mystery, the moonlight casting eerie shadows across the ancient structure. Above them, directly on top of the palace, was the portal they sought.

"I—" Rosalind didn't even know that it was already nighttime. She stared at the portal and frowned.

The portal was a swirling vortex of deep, inky darkness, framed by a halo of pulsating crimson light. It seemed to defy the laws of physics, a gateway into a realm unknown.

It emitted a low, resonating hum that sent shivers down their spines, a testament to the otherworldly power it contained.

The edges of the portal flickered and shifted, as if it were alive, constantly morphing and changing form. Shapes within the darkness seemed to writhe and dance, hinting at the presence of something unimaginable on the other side. Wisps of ethereal energy escaped from its periphery, reaching out like a monster's claws.

Up close, the portal seemed bigger, more intimidating. It looked like a large ball of darkness that threatened to devour everything and everyone around it.

"What do you think?" Lucas looked at her, a smirk apparent on his face. This time, she immediately felt the excitement in his eyes.

"It can be frightening… especially up close," Rosalind said. This was not the first time she had seen something like this. Still, she could not stop herself from feeling its weight.

"They are coming," Belisarius uttered. He stood not far away from them. "Do you remember what I told you about closing the portal?" Belisarius said. "I will be there to help you."

"I do…," Rosalind uttered. It was a sad fact that the only way they could close this portal was during the time when the demons from the other side would start crossing. This only made everything far more dangerous.

The plan was simple. They were going to make everyone think that the one who closed the portal was Lucas while Belisarius and Rosalind would work on closing the portal.

In this way, the one who would receive the anger from the demons who were able to possess a human body would only be directed at Lucas. Again, she was going to let Lucas receive the brunt of their hate.

"Although, I am fairly certain that those demons are not stupid enough to actually fall for the act," Lucas muttered.

Their conversation was interrupted by a loud boom.

The ground trembled violently as the air crackled with dark energy.

The gruesome opening of the portal has started.

Almost immediately, a sickly, crimson glow pierced through the air, casting eerie shadows that danced and flickered. The stench of sulfur and decay permeated the surroundings, making the atmosphere nauseating and ominous.

Rosalind and Lucas were suddenly engulfed in an otherworldly sensation as the portal tore through the fabric of reality. The skies twisted and contorted, giving birth to a whirlwind of chaos.

Then, from within the portal, the first signs of demons emerged— grotesque figures, demonic entities with twisted, contorted features, and eyes ablaze with malevolent intent. Taloned hands reached out, grasping for purchase as they descended, leaving streaks of red and black against the darkening sky. Their wretched bodies were adorned with jagged spines and gnarled horns, exuding an aura of malice.

"That—"

"On the count of three—" Belisarius interrupted Rosalind. She could see a black ominous ability swirling in Belisarius's hand. To her surprise, however, Lucas too had the same dark ominous smoke that seemed to mix with black lightning. "Three…."

"Two…."

"One!" Both Lucas and Belisarius said the words together.

Meanwhile, Rosalind steadied her racing heart. She followed Belisarius's instructions earlier as she focused her light and dark blessings on the portal.
