Chapter 90: Ice prison

The impact with the wall had left Davi’s body screaming, every muscle burned as if laced with fire, and even the simple act of standing demanded Herculean effort.

A metallic tang filled his mouth, and he spat a trickle of blood onto the cold stone beneath him. His fists clenched, knuckles whitening as he fought against the creeping darkness at the edges of his vision.

Stay awake. Just a little longer.

His mind and body were dangerously close to its limits, but he had done it. Things definitely didn’t go as he expected, but he was inside the temple.

Looking around, he could see many depictions of epic battles carved into the walls. They told the story of a lone beast warrior confronting an entire army.

And being there, he could breathe in fresh, crisp air. There was something comforting about being so close to the beasts’ homeland.

Besides, he could clearly sense the path to his destiny. Somewhere ahead, a corridor stretched into the shadows, veering to the right. Beyond it, a long, winding staircase would lead him to the land of the ice beasts.

Unfortunately, he didn’t have the energy for that entire run, but he didn’t need it, after all, he was close enough. And little by little, he could feel Haru’s power approaching him and filling his body.

His tired gaze gained new life, as a confident smile spread across his face and he prepared to face the enemy before him.

Obviously, he didn’t have time to check what abilities Haru had at that moment. Still, his body knew what to activate by instinct.

So he used the <Last Stand> ability, and immediately the wounds all over his body began to close slowly, while the boy felt his power gradually recover.

That was a rather strange power that could only be used in very specific situations. First, the user would need to be facing one or more opponents stronger than them alone.

Scondely, the user would have to be gravely injured. And the ability could only be used once every 100 hours

However, if all these conditions were met, its effect was impressive. Not only did it heal the body, but it also strengthened it, increasing all his stats by 40% and recovering mana and vitality.

Taking advantage of his recovered power, Davi decided to advance and attack his opponent. He could have simply continued fleeing, but he preferred not to bring trouble to his newest girlfriend’s homeland.

Besides, he really wanted to kill that beast with his own hands and was confident that he could do it this time.

Demonstrating his superior speed, he easily approached the enemy, dodging its initial blows.

Then he spun in the air perfectly, activating <Moon Slash>. His blade glowed softly before striking the monster’s chest squarely.

However, once again, the boy failed to inflict any damage. All he managed to do was destroy the blade he held.

He quickly created a new sword and parried his opponent’s blow at the last instant.

For some time longer, the beast tried to pressure him with powerful blows, but its deformed body simply couldn’t move with the agility it had before.

Davi, even though extremely injured, managed to be more agile than the creature in that state. Therefore, now that he was practically fully recovered, dodging was nothing more than an easy task.

That being said, he still needed to find a way to inflict real damage on that beast.

He preferred not to use a supernova again, because that would leave him in a very weakened state again, and he wasn’t confident that it would be enough.

But none of his other blows seemed to have enough power for that.

"Damn it," Davi murmured as he jumped to the left, escaping the beast’s punch at the last second.

Then he danced with precision, easily traversing a storm of lightning. And, once again, he tried to cut the creature, but without any success.

Immediately afterward, he activated a <Firestorm> engulfing the beast in intense flames so that he could buy some time.

Then he gathered a large amount of mana in the palm of his right hand. Using a <Supernova> with all his power as before seemed like a bad idea, but he had the option of simply accumulating less mana.

During the few seconds that the beast writhed in agony within the raging flames, Davi focused all his mana on a single point. The energy pulsed violently within him, accumulating like a hurricane about to be unleashed.

So, as soon as his enemy emerged from the fire, his skin marked only by light burns, as if the flames had caused no real damage, Davi was already prepared.

He raised his arm, aiming directly at the monster before him. A bright sphere of energy began to form in the palm of his hand, growing in intensity until it shone like a small sun. The air around it wavered with the heat and pressure of the concentrated mana, while sparks danced around the unstable sphere.

For a moment, everything seemed to fall silent. Then, with a deafening roar, all that energy was released at once.

The beam shot out like lightning, tearing through the air at a speed impossible to follow with the naked eye. In an instant, the explosion of pure destruction struck the beast.

The impact was devastating. The creature barely had time to react before feeling the energy pierce its flesh. The beam tore through its shoulder, burning and corroding the surrounding flesh, leaving a smoldering hole in its grotesque skin.

The monster roared in fury and pain, instinctively retreating. But despite all that, within moments, black mana gathered around the beast’s wound, which once again regenerated.

Davi could only lament, perhaps if he could fire multiple attacks like that in quick succession, he could defeat the beast, but he didn’t have that much power.

And as he easily dodged his enemy’s blows, the boy continued searching for a solution to his problem.

The only conclusion he could reach was that his best option was a battle of attrition. Normally, he would lose in any prolonged fight, but in this case, there was a chance that wouldn’t happen, after all, the monster was still an unstable creation. Moreover, at some point, it would have to run out of mana and collapse.

But that was a very risky gamble. Besides, he needed to end this fight quickly so he could return to camp and help everyone.

Considering all that, he decided to turn and run, luring the monster towards where Haru should be. However, the moment he started running in that direction, the boy felt a presence watching him.

"Reveal yourself," he ordered in a firm tone.

It was only then that the girl who had been observing everything revealed herself. With a loving smile, Haru bowed respectfully before her master.

"Hey, how long have you been watching me?" Davi asked as he easily dodged another punch from his opponent.

"Since you came in here," Haru said, approaching her master.

Davi sighed, noting how long it took him to notice the girl’s presence. Then he simply ordered, "Can you handle that?"

"Yes, but..." the girl hesitated for a moment. "Are you sure I can have your prey? I wouldn’t want to steal my master’s opponent."

In that girl’s culture, fights were sacred. And trying to attack an enemy that already had an ’owner’ was a great sin. Even more so, trying to steal the prey of her master, to whom she owed absolute submission.

"Don’t worry, I already defeated this guy," Davi stated. "This defective and annoying leftover is just getting in my way, and I have more important things to deal with. Besides, I promise to give you a reward if you handle this for me," the boy said without thinking much.

"If you say so," Haru smiled animatedly and turned to the opponent before her with a terrifying grin. "Leave it to me," the girl said excitedly, then drew her sword.

Haru advanced without hesitation, her sword glowing with a frigid aura as it cut through the air in a perfect arc. The monster didn’t even have time to react before the blade pierced its torso.

For a brief moment, the creature’s body remained still, as if its mind hadn’t yet processed the blow. Then, with a wet snap, the upper part of its body slid to the side, separating from the lower half.

Davi watched the scene with a sigh.

But before relief could take hold, the same dark energy that had previously closed his wounds began to act again. Like a living, pulsating mass, it enveloped the two halves of the monster, and in a grotesque instant, fused them back together.

The beast roared, its mouth opening in a furious scream as its regenerated body trembled.

Haru tilted her head, looking disappointed.

"What an annoying enemy..." She murmured.

Without wasting time, she charged again, her slashes becoming a whirlwind of icy blades. Each of her blows was clean and lethal, dismembering the monster repeatedly. But every time she reduced her enemy to pieces, the dark energy spread, restoring its form.

Noticing this, Haru sighed, casually dodging a clumsy blow. At that rate, it would take forever to force that beast to its limit.

Then, as if a lightbulb had turned on in her mind, her eyes gleamed with an idea.

In the blink of an eye, the girl stepped back a few paces, pointing her hand toward the ground. A bluish aura began to spread around the beast, and the air suddenly turned icy cold.

The monster lunged to attack her again, but the moment its foot touched the ground, ice spikes sprouted up, closing in around it like a trap.

"Let’s see how you regenerate inside this," Haru whispered.

With a flick of her hand, the ice continued to expand, completely enveloping the monster. Within seconds, it was sealed inside a massive crystalline prison, its form writhing within, unable to move.

Then, having finished her work, Haru turned to her master with a wide smile and eyes that begged for praise.

"Master, now about my reward..."
