Chapter 69: The individual test - David

After being enveloped by an intense light, Davi was teleported to a forest similar to Sylvia’s, though in his case, it wasn’t as dense.

The trees, though imposing, were more spaced out, allowing for a clear view of the surrounding terrain. Sunlight managed to filter through the canopies, casting elongated shadows on the ground covered in dry leaves.

Looking around, he spotted 10, no, 12 giant monsters. They seemed to be communicating through grunts, but the communication was rudimentary, consisting of a limited variety of sounds and gestures.

It wasn’t a complex language like that of humans, but rather a set of signals with restricted meanings. This meant they probably couldn’t coordinate well as a group.

Or at least that’s what Davi managed to figure out in the time he had to observe. After all, it didn’t take long for the monsters to notice the boy’s presence and focus their attention on him.

"Damn it!" the boy complained, realizing he had lost any chance of attacking his enemies by surprise.

The monsters had noticed him. Even if they weren’t intelligent, they were 12 creatures over 4 meters tall. And the situation seemed desperate without the ability to use any of his powers.

If he had his abilities, he could eliminate them easily, but he only had a limited number of shots with his gun. And all he knew about it was a brief description Gilg had given him.

According to him, as long as Davi hit a spot that would be lethal to an ordinary human, such as the head or heart, the weapon would kill any enemy instantly. If he missed the shot, the weapon wouldn’t cause any damage.

Of course, it was an incredibly powerful ability, but he only had 15 shots, meaning any mistake could be fatal.

In any case, he needed to do something, and his first plan was to try to separate the group of orcs. If he could face them alone, it would be easier to take them out.

So, after putting enough distance between himself and the orcs, and noticing they were splitting into smaller groups, he decided to lure one of those groups, separating them from the others.

"Idiots, over here!" Davi shouted, trying to get their attention. "Come on, follow me!"

He continued leaping from tree to tree, using the terrain to his advantage. Even though he had just arrived and had no idea where he was going, he managed to improvise, moving with agility, hiding, and climbing with dexterity.

However, there was one problem: his stamina. The constant escape and intense movements were starting to take their toll, and he could feel exhaustion creeping in. The longer he dragged out this fight, the worse it would be for him.

That said, after running nonstop, Davi finally managed to circle around the orc patrol, positioning himself behind one of the monsters. Then, before the orc could notice his presence, a loud bang echoed through the forest.

Pow!

The precise shot pierced the orc’s skull, and the creature collapsed without even understanding what had hit it. Life had been drained from its eyes.

The sound of the massive body hitting the ground echoed through the forest, so Davi began to move quickly. He knew the orcs would likely head over to investigate what had happened.

"Only 11 left. Come on, let’s see what you’ve got." The boy murmured with confidence. That said, his legs were trembling, not from fear, but from exhaustion.

Fatigue was evident throughout his entire body, and he was breathing heavily. Still, he kept running, dodging, and climbing until he found another favorable position to shoot.

Then, two sharp gunshots echoed through the forest in quick succession. Shortly after, the lifeless bodies of two orcs collapsed to the ground, their companions completely unaware of where the attacks had come from.

"Only 9 left," the boy murmured between tired breaths.

The exhaustion was inevitable. It would have been much easier if he had someone to help him, but this was the situation he was in. So, he took a deep breath and muttered to himself:

"Stay focused, conserve energy, observe your surroundings, and wait for the right moment to strike."

With that, he continued avoiding being surrounded, creating openings to shoot. Another orc fell, and now only 8 remained.

"Ha! Ha! Ha!" Davi’s breathing was irregular, his entire body seemingly on the verge of giving up at any moment.

And then, the fatigue finally caught up to him. Davi made a crucial mistake, distracted by the exhaustion weighing down his body. Suddenly, he found himself cornered: behind him was an impassable rock wall; in front of him, two enormous orcs.

To make matters worse, the real reason for all his troubles was the smaller creatures emerging around him. Maybe they were goblins? Regardless, the problem was that he hadn’t noticed these enemies earlier.

The goblins laughed sharply and shrilly, as if they knew Davi was at a disadvantage. They moved quickly, surrounding him from all sides, while the two orcs advanced with slow, heavy steps.

Davi took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the situation, but there was no time to hesitate. He needed to act, and fast.

His hand gripped the revolver firmly, and three shots echoed through the forest in rapid succession. The first shot hit the orc on his right, piercing its skull and sending it crashing heavily to the ground.

The second shot struck the orc on his left, who barely had time to raise its axe before collapsing. The third shot went straight into a goblin that was approaching. Davi didn’t want to waste one of his shots on such a weak enemy, but he had no choice. If he allowed that monster to hit and injure him, he would exhaust himself even faster.

The bodies of the three enemies fell almost simultaneously, creating a brief moment of distraction, as the goblins recoiled in fear for an instant. At least they could be easily intimidated, which allowed the boy to escape the situation.

With the sword he carried at his waist, he eliminated the few goblins he couldn’t shake off. And after all that, he sat on the ground, utterly exhausted.

"What’s wrong with me?" he muttered, realizing he was growing far more exhausted than usual.

’Sorry about that, I forgot to tell you, but that gun drains your energy over time.’

Finally, Gilg’s voice echoed in the boy’s head, explaining the reason for all his struggles. Knowing this, Davi could only sigh in frustration. This meant even resting wouldn’t be useful.

"Only 6 left, only 6 left..." he reminded himself, trying to regain focus.

He stood up and clenched his fists tightly, summoning every ounce of strength he had left. Then he ran once more, knowing he needed to defeat those monsters as soon as possible.

Through the forest, the irritated grunts of the orcs could be heard as they failed to find their enemy no matter how hard they tried.

"Garr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

The massive monsters punched trees in frustration and growled at each other. At the same time, a certain tension could be seen in their eyes, as if they feared being killed like the others.

Then the boy jumped in front of an orc who was venting its frustration by kicking goblins.

"Looking for me?" he commented with an arrogant smile.

But before the monster could react, it fell to the ground dead, a bullet having perfectly pierced its skull.

This time, Davi didn’t run after defeating his enemy, because he had finally found the perfect spot: a clearing. Thanks to this, he could see any enemy approaching from a distance.

And, of course, this meant he could take them out from afar. This was the ideal place to eliminate the remaining 5 orcs.

The first monster to approach Davi tried to attack him with a clumsy, awkward movement, but its slowness was evident. Before it could fully raise its heavy weapon, Davi had already shooted.

The enemy fell to the ground with a completely lifeless gaze. It didn’t even have a chance to see what hit it.

Next, four more enemies approached, advancing with a hint of fear in their eyes. But Davi, with four quick shots, fired in rapid succession, the echoes ringing like thunder.

With incredible precision, the boy managed to hit all his enemies before they could get close. One by one, the monsters fell, their heavy bodies hitting the ground with dull thuds as life drained from their eyes.

Around them, the goblins who had been watching the scene froze in fear. They knew very well how powerful the orcs were, so naturally, they were terrified of a being who could defeat them so easily.

Because of this, they quickly fled, fearing they would have to face him. This saved Davi, as he wouldn’t have been able to fight them if necessary.

"Seems even idiot monsters are capable of feeling fear," Davi muttered, watching the goblins scatter and run away in desperation.

The silence that followed was broken only by the sound of Davi’s tired breathing. The pain was excruciating, and his legs screamed with exhaustion.

Davi sat on the ground, leaning against the body of one of the dead orcs. Around him, only the stench of death, corpses, and crows coming to feed on the remains were left.

His vision began to blur, but he should be fine, after all, he had completed the test.

"Hey! When are you going to send me back to the temple? Didn’t I finish the test?" the boy shouted at the sky, a little irritated.

Then the ground shook in response to his question, as a monster much larger than the others approached him.

’Sorry, but you still have to kill the orc champion,’ Gilg informed him.
