Chapter 51: World Deadliest Talent: Child’s Play
— Pamela’s POV —
Returning to the command center that had been reduced to rubble, I didn’t know how to feel. That building housed dozens of active officers, including Colonel Adin and his lieutenant, Katrina.
To think both of them died to the same enemy they planned to sacrifice us to made me feel strange. I wasn’t sure whether to feel happy or sad—I only hoped Adam and Natasha heeded my words and left the building on time.
At the center of the rubble was the familiar figure leading the horde. It was the 8 ft tall sand-colored orc with a waist-length dress and a massive one-handed war axe. He was seated on a protruding part of the shattered debris, and it looked like he was patiently waiting for us.
Only now did I get a good look at his weapon. It wasn’t like that of other orcs who carried bone or roughly made hand axes.
This was made of some sort of special metal, with bluish veins stretching across its body down to its haft. Blue lightning crackled around the weapon.
"Just as my Lord predicted, there will be some resistance, but this city will eventually fall to us because humans are greedy and selfish..." the orc champion spoke in a human tongue so clearly, I had to look around in search of the source of the voice.
I couldn’t wrap it around my brain that an orc could speak the human language just like a middle-aged man.
Contrary to his hulking size and intimidating look, the orc champion’s voice was mild, calm, and civil. He sounded more human than most humans.
I looked over my shoulder, and as expected, Viktor was taken aback too. He looked like he was seeing a ghost, petrified by shock—or maybe fear. I couldn’t tell.
My gaze shifted back to the orc champion, filled with doubt. I have served as a professional Limitless for the Imperial States of America for over two decades. During this time, I have fought many foes, including orc champions.
While their strength has always been on par with that of B-rated Limitless, never have I felt threatened in the presence of one—until today.
Bwooooooooooooooo!
The deafening sound of a horn resonated from the distance, followed by loud cries of crows scattering helter-skelter as if they were trying to escape something.
My eyes narrowed as I noticed something coming from the distance. At first, I couldn’t make sense of what it was, but slowly, everything became clearer to me.
"Orc Wranglers and their Skarnaks!" Viktor took the words right out of my mouth.
Ratatatatatata!
As if in response to the horn, the sound of our aether-powered machine guns mounted on the walls followed. Blue beams poured into the air in the thousands, racing to meet the orc wrangler army.
The war for C.A.T.H had begun!
Thud!
Viktor and I quickly turned to see the orc champion standing. He lifted his war axe and placed it on his shoulder while his eyes revealed blue sparks.
"Now then..." he said calmly. "Let’s get this over with."
Bang!
The ground beneath the orc’s feet shattered as he shot forward at an incredible speed. All I could see were dazzling bluish sparks rushing down my location.
Huff!
I exhaled sharply as Viktor’s hulking figure sped past me, rushing to meet the enemy head-on.
BOOOM!
A cataclysmic shockwave erupted as both sides clashed and Viktor was sent hurling back in my direction.
Bungee Jump!
I leapt slightly off the ground, but when I fell, I fell into the earth, sinking deeper into it as the world changed before me.
While using my [Bungee Jump] skill, I can phase into the ground with a light leap. Within the earth, the world was dark except for the energy signatures of those on land.
Like now—Viktor’s energy signature was a deep shade of brown, while that of the orc was bluish in color.
Swoosh!
As soon as I decided, the earth propelled me toward the bluish energy signature, and in barely a second I had popped up beside the orc champion, gently grabbing his index finger.
Tag Trap!
"Tag... You’re it." I revealed a cold smile as I looked up to meet the surprised gaze of the orc champion.
My tiny palm glowed, leaving behind a pink cat energy symbol on his finger. But even now, the orc champion did not panic or try to pull away—he seemed more intrigued than annoyed.
"What is this?" the orc champion asked. "How does this talent work?"
Buzz!
My soul shivered at the question. This was the first time I had seen an orc think before acting. To make matters worse, he even used the word [Talent]. In all my decades of service, never have I seen a race we invaded know this much about humans, much less use the word [Talent].
"What are you?" My eyes narrowed as I asked. "How do you know so much about us?"
The orc smiled sweetly at me before responding.
"Everything I know about you humans was taught to me by my Lord," he said in a soothing voice that made me feel uncomfortable. "Alone, we would have been just another mindless horde to be conquered by your kind using strategy and sound reasoning."
For the first time since I awakened my [Talent], I felt fear creeping into my guarded heart. This was the second time the orc champion had spoken about a Lord—and not just that, he spoke of him with the kind of reverence a man should have only for God.
"And who is this Lord?" I maintained a calm tone and a jovial smile.
But the orc champion simply shook his head and said:
"Why search for someone beyond your capabilities?" the orc champion asked with a smile.
"My capabilities?" I scoffed.
I may not possess the strongest [Talent], but I can openly say I possess the deadliest one! If I had decided to remain in the field like Viktor, I would have easily become an S-rated Limitless by now.
"My [Child’s Play] talent may not be the strongest, but it’s not inferior to anyone’s talent in any way!" I snarled at him, but he remained calm.
"Hahahahahaha!" He laughed. "Alright then. Let us find out if you are bullshitting or not."
