Chapter 48: The Devil’s Solution
Chapter 48: The Devil’s Solution
Buzz!
Everyone in the room was stunned by Pamela’s decision—except me. In my opinion, it was the most rational decision because defending this place was impossible against the horde.
While the C.A.T.H was armed with a lot of Aether-powered weapons, turrets, and a sizable number of soldiers, I doubted they were more than five thousand.
But does that matter?
Only Aether-powered weapons were effective against these monsters, and I doubted there were up to two hundred Ascendants here.
Even if they were, it still wouldn’t be enough. We would basically be sacrificing ourselves for nothing.
"All helicopters and planes available will be used to evacuate as many citizens as possible," the lieutenant mustered the courage to talk. "You cannot leave with your team!" she said, but her words fell on deaf ears.
Pamela was already walking toward the door, and so was I—except I backtracked. I didn’t dare show my back to them, and I didn’t plan on dying by a shot to the back.
Natasha was a bit hesitant, but she followed.
And just as expected, the Colonel reached for his gun!
DOOR!
The moment he pulled out his gun, my towering gates had already taken shape, standing between him and us!
"Shoot... I dare you!" I snarled as my eyes slowly turned pitch black.
This was a matter of life and death. I didn’t come to this world to play politics with these bastards. Even if it meant becoming wanted fugitives in this country, I didn’t mind taking that step.
This time, I had to agree with Pamela on this.
I felt Pamela gently grab my shoulder. Looking over it, she shook her head, and I nodded. Reluctantly, I withdrew the gates and stepped back while she stepped forward.
At this point, those seated behind the monitors were on their feet, their hands on their guns. My gaze shifted to Viktor, who hadn’t moved an inch.
In fact, his eyes were on the ground, and he acted like none of this was happening.
"Government dog." I cursed under my breath.
"All Limitless will be the last to evacuate from the site. You will stay here and hold them off," the Colonel had suddenly regained his voice.
Natasha gasped beside me, while Pamela remained calm too.
"How do you plan to stop us from leaving?" Pamela asked the question on my mind.
The Colonel and Lieutenant looked toward Viktor.
Buzz!
My brows knitted and my fists clenched as Viktor raised his head.
"You will discipline this traitor for us, won’t you?" the Colonel asked with a questioning gaze.
Viktor froze, blinking a few times before shifting his shocked expression in our direction. He clearly didn’t expect this would escalate this way.
"Will you?" Pamela asked in a threatening tone as her hands balled into fists.
Viktor was reluctant. Even a piece of shit like this knew these people were going a bit too far. However, his hesitation was also a bad sign.
All he needed was a little push—and the Colonel didn’t disappoint.
"I will make sure the government knows of the great service you rendered today," the Colonel revealed a sinister smile. "We always reward Limitless who have proven their loyalty to the crown," he added.
Slowly, the confusion and hesitation in Viktor’s eyes began to clear, steeling with resolve. I watched his fists clench as he stepped forward with a disgusting righteous look on his face.
I knew this bastard was about to spew crap to justify his betrayal—and he didn’t disappoint.
"We are all citizens of the Imperial States of America. We have received so much benefit and support from the government. Don’t you think it’s time we repay its kindness and protect as many citizens as we can?" he asked with a calm and righteous tone that made me feel like throwing up.
"Bastard!" Natasha yelled from the side, but I gestured for her to keep quiet and strolled forward.
Standing side by side with Pamela, who was still silently glaring at Viktor, I clapped my hands as loudly as possible to draw everyone’s attention.
Once everyone’s attention was on me, I stopped clapping and lowered my hands slowly. I turned to meet Pamela’s gaze and shot her a warm smile before saying:
"Allow me to offer the perfect solution for this situation," I said in a soothing tone. "Let’s kill everyone here and leave. Dead men tell no tales."
Buzz!
Pamela was calm—proving she already had that option in mind. I couldn’t say the same for everyone else as they all instinctively took a step back, while Natasha gave me a disbelieving look.
She didn’t think such an evil thought could come from me.
"All you have to do is kill him." I pointed at Viktor, who took another step back, his mouth left open in shock. "I alone can handle the rest... quietly."
"You!" Viktor roared. "Are you crazy?!"
"YOU BRAT!" the Colonel screamed, while his lieutenant’s brows furrowed and she grabbed her gun.
The other officers present pulled out their guns and pointed them at us, but Pamela and I never broke contact.
It felt like she was searching my eyes for a hint of doubt—a reason to refuse—but she couldn’t find any.
"Okay..." Pamela’s childish smile returned. "Let’s do that."
Buzz!
Everyone in the room exchanged glances while we turned to face them.
Natasha was too stunned to move, just standing there with her eyes wide open. White mist began pouring out of my body while Pamela’s eyes revealed a strange light.
"You can’t be serious?" Viktor was still trying to wrap his brain around what was happening.
Never in a million years did he think we would actually go this route. At worst, he expected us to try and leave—and then he would beat us down and force us to stay. He didn’t expect we would be the ones taking the initiative to attack.
No one has a monopoly over violence!
Just as I was about to take a step forward, the room lights turned red, and the familiar siren sounds boomed:
WEE-OOO! WEE-OOO! WEE-OOO!
WEE-OOO! WEE-OOO! WEE-OOO!
Instinctively, everyone’s gaze fell on the holographic map. On it, we saw a big red dot shooting toward the C.A.T.H walls—fearlessly!
"This was what they were waiting for!" I gasped.
