Chapter 47: Furious Pamela

"He’s not feeling too good. I had to support him on the way here," Pamela used me as an excuse, and the Ascendants glanced at me.

The man had dazzling black hair gelled back smoothly and a thick mustache that I found irritating. His gaze was unkind and, to some extent, condescending. This made me hate him even more.

"Colonel, he is the child who fought the orc berserker alone," the lady beside him quickly said, catching my attention.

She had long blond hair, and her face cap was pulled down so low I couldn’t see much of her face. Her words seemed to trigger genuine shock from everyone except Pamela, as they gazed at me with widened eyes.

Even the Colonel couldn’t hide his surprise.

"Impossible!" Viktor blurted out. "He’s a support type capable of storing items. There is no way he’s the one."

Viktor’s words were met with a cold silence as the Colonel’s gaze tightened.

"Are you calling my lieutenant a liar?" he asked in a cold and threatening tone.

To my surprise, Viktor shrank back with a look of terror and quickly lowered his head.

"Never!" His voice quivered, and I frowned.

Were Ascendants stronger than Limitless?

Based on my knowledge, we are superior. Yet how can a superior being cower in the presence of the inferior? Only then did I notice Pamela’s hands were clenched into fists, clearly pissed by what was happening, but she didn’t speak either.

"Opening space?" The lieutenant seemed oblivious to the tension and rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "On the van, he used an ability that made him stronger and heal faster..." Her voice trailed off, and then her eyes widened.

"Yes!" she yelled with certainty. "He did open what seemed like a portal and tried to push the berserker in but failed."

At this point, everyone’s gaze—except for Pamela’s—shifted to me, their eyes widened in surprise.

"Doesn’t that mean..." the lieutenant muttered with a look of realization.

This was an expression everyone shared.

"Dual talents!" the Colonel said, a tinge of surprise in his cold voice.

"I didn’t know..." Viktor mumbled timidly.

"Because you are not a part of the Academy. You are just a Texas Pro-Limitless who aids us with rift raids," Pamela finally clapped back, her voice carrying a tinge of disgust that shocked even Viktor.

I knew she wasn’t being rude for no reason. She was pissed at Viktor for letting himself get walked over by people far beneath his capabilities.

The tension in the room was high, and even those seated behind the large screens couldn’t help but steal glances at the heated exchange going on.

Sigh!

I let out a heavy sigh and began limping my way toward the war table, only stopping when I stood next to Natasha. Ignoring everyone’s gaze, I glanced across the flatlands surrounding the C.A.T.H.

I didn’t need anyone to tell me that the red dots covering part of the map were the orc horde. They were a good distance from the main C.A.T.H., and they were waiting for something.

But what?

While I was pondering, Pamela walked over to my side, glanced at the holographic map, and frowned deeply.

"How are they all here?" she asked directly, looking the Colonel in the eyes.

Her direct question seemed to annoy the Colonel, and he frowned but reluctantly answered.

"As you must know, Governor Raymond took the last of Louisiana’s professional Limitless to confront the orc champion leading the horde. He refused to flee the country against our advice and even approached the battlefield under the protection of a few of our men." The Colonel’s frown deepened as he spoke. "Unfortunately, he didn’t make it out alive. Everyone was slaughtered."

Buzz!

My head snapped up to meet the disturbed expression of the Colonel. Even I didn’t expect to hear a sitting governor was killed. I strongly believed he would be the first to leave the country.

But if he didn’t, doesn’t that mark the end of his career?

With no state to govern, and with a track record of losing his state to monsters, who would take him seriously should he vie for other political positions?

His actions were not out of patriotism, but selfishness.

Bam!

Pamela slammed a balled fist on the desk with a deep frown on her face.

"Are you saying the governor pulled out the five Limitless meant to defend Shreveport and Baton Rouge—dragged them into a hopeless battle due to his selfishness—and got killed?" Pamela’s voice quaked, and her face reddened.

I have never seen her this angry before.

"HOW DAR—" the Colonel raised his voice, but it was overshadowed by Pamela’s roar.

"ANSWER ME!!!"

Both the Colonel and the Lieutenant shrank back, fear slipping into their facial expressions. Following the chain of command, they outranked Pamela, but would that matter if she decided to kill them here in a fit of rage?

"To secure his position and political relevance, he pulled out five Limitless from the safety of the fortifications in Shreveport and Baton Rouge," Pamela continued, but her tone was cold and lacked emotion this time.

This was when I knew she was dead serious.

"Because of his selfishness, not only did five Limitless die—he opened up the citizens in those regions to the orcs. Since the horde is here, it means they are all dead," Pamela sneered disdainfully. "Now the citizens here are in danger because those two strongholds failed to hold out long enough. The evacuation planes are yet to arrive, and you have the guts to raise your fucking voice at me?"

Buzz!

The Colonel and the Lieutenant took a step back while their hands reached for their holsters. Pamela’s murderous gaze fell on their moving hands, and they quickly retracted them.

’Wise decision.’ I mentally nodded.

If Pamela is as strong as I think she is, they will die even before they get to shoot. Even I felt slightly confident in my ability to deal with these two—as long as I could pull them into my territory.

"I-I apologize," the Colonel muttered timidly, lacking the authority he once had when hounding Viktor.

Pamela said nothing and shut her eyes, taking in a deep breath and exhaling loudly. When her eyes opened, the rage was gone and was replaced with resolve.

"Me and my students will not be a part of this..." she decided decisively. "I will not allow any other Limitless to die because of the stupidity of you powerless humans." She sneered.

Without waiting for a response, she turned in my direction. She gazed into my eyes briefly before shifting her gaze to Natasha.

"Let’s go. We are heading back home!"
