Chapter 226: I’m scared

Kael let out a long breath, his body relaxing despite himself, the warmth of Liss’s presence melting his tension.

Her thigh pressed closer, her breasts brushing his chest again, a quiet intimacy that felt natural, grounding.

"I’m scared, you know," he murmured, his voice barely audible, his dark eyes staring at the ceiling.

"I don’t know who’s after me. I don’t know what’s coming. It’s like I’m walking through a house full of invisible tripwires."

Liss didn’t move at first, her body still, her breath steady.

Then she pressed her forehead to his shoulder, her hair spilling across his chest, her hand resting on his heart, feeling its unsteady rhythm.

"You’ll be okay," she whispered, her voice soft, fierce. "We’ll be okay. That’s why you’re not alone, dumbass."

Kael’s eyelids fluttered, his breathing slowing, the weight of her words and her warmth pulling him under.

Moments passed in silence, the villa’s hum a distant lullaby, Liss’s hand steady on his chest, her thigh draped over his, her presence a shield against the chaos.

She watched him, her blue eyes softening as his chest rose and fell evenly, the tension easing from his brow, sleep claiming him at last.

She leaned in, her lips brushing his cheek in a gentle kiss, a quiet promise in the dark.

"This is where you belong, on my bed with me," she whispered, her voice barely audible, her hand still on his chest, protective, unwavering.

Liss closed her eyes, her body curled against his, her breath syncing with his, letting sleep claim her too, their shared warmth a fortress against the shadows waiting beyond.

The sun crept over the horizon, bleeding pale orange light across the city’s skyline, casting long shadows as Rhea and Freya pulled up to Liss’s villa in the Zephyr X-9.

The sleek, obsidian-black car’s engine fell silent, its finish reflecting the dawn’s soft glow, a predator at rest.

Both girls remained in disguise—hoodies, dark glasses, baseball caps pulled low—precaution a reflex they couldn’t afford to ignore, even in the early hour’s quiet in a area full of S rank heroes.

"This is Liss’s place?" Rhea asked, her amber eyes narrowing at the luxurious modern home, its clean lines framed by manicured hedges and reinforced security walls, a villa disguised as opulence.

Freya gave a soft grunt, her platinum-cyan hair tucked under her cap, her blue eyes scanning the perimeter.

"Looks like it. Fancy bitch cashed in on that S-Class promotion."

Rhea’s lips twitched, her fingers tightening around the car door handle, her flames simmering beneath her skin.

She hated coming here, hated Liss’s smug confidence, but Kael had insisted, his voice urgent over the phone, and that changed everything.

"What do we do?" Rhea asked, her voice low, reluctant.

"Suck it up," Freya sighed, pulling her cap lower, her frost-ready hands flexing. "Ring the damn bell."

Rhea stepped out, her boots crunching on the gravel path as she approached the gate, her hand hovering over the buzzer.

Before her finger could press it, a sharp crack of lightning split the air, a burst of static that made her hair stand on end.

"Stop! Don’t ring the bell," Liss’s voice drawled, sharp and familiar.

Rhea stumbled back, flames sparking instinctively in her palms, her amber eyes blazing.

Liss stood before her, barefoot, in a loose black t-shirt that hugged her athletic curves and shorts that clung to her toned thighs, her blonde hair tied in a messy bun, strands fluttering in the dawn breeze.

Her casual stance belied the electric aura radiating from her, her blue eyes glinting with amusement.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Rhea snapped, her flames flickering, her hoodie shifting as she braced for a fight.

"You trying to fry us first thing in the morning?" Freya added, stepping out of the Zephyr, her voice sharp, frost creeping along her knuckles, her cap low but her blue eyes piercing.

Liss smirked, unfazed, leaning against the gate, her t-shirt riding up slightly, revealing a sliver of toned midriff. "Oh, please. Don’t act like I shocked you. Jealousy’s not cute on villains."

The jab hit hard.

Rhea’s flames flared, then dimmed, her jaw tightening. Freya’s frost thickened, her eyes narrowing behind her glasses.

"I hate you," Freya muttered, her voice low, venomous.

"I hate you more," Rhea echoed, her amber eyes smoldering, her flames simmering out.

Liss’s smile widened, devoid of diplomacy, her blue eyes gleaming with defiance. "Villains hating me? Guess I’m doing my job right."

"Where’s Kael?" Rhea cut in, her voice sharp, eager to end the bickering before it spiraled.

"Sleeping," Liss said, her tone casual, as if it were the most natural answer, her shorts shifting as she crossed her arms, emphasizing her curves.

"He called us here," Freya reminded, her frost fading, her voice edged with irritation.

"I know," Liss said, turning to punch the security code into the gate panel, her fingers swift, her bun bouncing. The gates buzzed, creaking open with a low hum. "You’ll be staying here for a while—until we figure out who’s hunting him."

Rhea froze, her amber eyes widening. "Hunting?"

Freya’s head snapped to her, her blue eyes sharp behind her glasses. "Wait—isn’t the Reaper dead?"

"Yes," Liss said flatly, her voice losing its playful edge, her blue eyes hardening as she led them through the gate. "But, the Reaper was just a pawn. There is someone else who wants him and they might come for him again."

Rhea and Freya exchanged a glance, their hostility melting into protective concern, their hands twitching, ready for a fight.

"Do you know who it is?" Freya asked, her voice low, her frost flaring faintly.

Liss shook her head, her bun swaying, her t-shirt clinging to her curves as she walked.

"Not yet. But they’ve got reach. Power. If they wanted Kael for his abilities, they’ll definitely come again. Stronger."

Rhea stepped through the gate, muttering under her breath, "I already hate it here."

Freya sighed, following as the Zephyr rolled through the gate, parking itself in the villa’s sleek garage.

From behind a wall of a neighboring building, a figure watched from the shadows, their silhouette blending into the dawn’s haze.

As the gates closed and the car vanished into the compound, the figure blinked out of sight, dissolving into the morning wind as another vehicle passed below, leaving no trace, a ghost in the waking city.
