Chapter 225: defiance
Chapter 225: defiance
Lila nodded calmly, her black eyes steady, her blanket held tight.
Tila gave a half-scowl, her black eyes narrowing, but she nodded too, her defiance muted.
Kael walked to the door, pausing before exiting, his voice teasing but serious. "And if either of you try to sneak out or fight again, I’ll call Liss to babysit."
Tila groaned in mock horror, her black eyes rolling. "Ugh, no way."
Kael grinned, his hand on the doorknob. "Goodnight."
He shut the door with a soft click, leaving the twins in the dim, quiet room, the faint hum of the villa’s systems a soothing backdrop.
Silence settled, heavy with the weight of their reconciliation.
A beat passed.
Tila muttered under her breath, her black eyes glinting with lingering irritation. "I still think he is lying about why we are naked."
Lila, lying back against her pillow, her curls spilling across the silk, replied dryly, "I think Lightning Lass didn’t want her bed getting dirty."
Tila rolled her black eyes, her scowl softening into a smirk. "What a bitch."
"Real bitch," Lila agreed, a faint smile tugging at her lips.
Another pause, the air lighter now, the tension easing.
"Hey, sis..." Tila said suddenly, her black eyes glinting with mischief.
"What?" Lila asked, turning her head, her curls shifting.
Tila grinned, wicked and playful, and yanked the blanket down from Lila’s chest, exposing her breasts, her nipples tightening in the cool air.
Before Lila could react, Tila reached out, tugging one nipple sharply, a teasing pinch that made Lila yelp.
"OW—what the hell?!" Lila yelled, yanking the blanket back, her black eyes wide with indignation, her face flushing as she covered herself.
Tila smirked, leaning back, her black eyes gleaming. "Payback for slapping me."
Lila groaned, swatting Tila’s arm, her curls bouncing, her voice exasperated but fond. "Idiot."
They settled back into the pillows, huddled under the shared blanket, their black eyes heavy with exhaustion, their breaths slowing.
The shadows outside the window faded to grey, the dawn creeping closer.

Kael sat alone on the staircase of Liss’s new villa, the polished wood cool beneath him, his arms draped loosely over his knees, fingers twitching with phantom stress.
The pre-dawn stillness amplified his thoughts, each one louder than the last, a relentless drumbeat of worry.
The twins were stable—naked, memory-fractured, and volatile, but alive, tucked away in the guest suite.
Rhea and Freya were en route, their questions and demands barreling toward him like a storm.
And beyond that, something darker loomed—a faceless threat tied to the Reaper, an S-Class villain who is trying to get him.
She wasn’t acting alone; someone higher, someone with power, saw Kael’s empathetic resonance as a weapon, a tool to twist heroes into villains.
The thought chilled him, a cold weight settling in his chest, heavier than the bruises on his body.
He ran a hand through his hair, his dark eyes heavy, dry, sleep tugging at him like a relentless tide.
His muscles ached, his bones weary, but his mind was a live wire, spiraling.
What if I sleep and miss the next attack? What if they come for the twins again? For me? What if this time... I don’t wake up?
His head drooped, exhaustion winning, but he jerked upright, heart pounding.
"Maybe I should grab a coffee," he muttered, his voice a rough whisper in the quiet.
He pushed himself up, but a wave of dizziness hit, a low tide pulling at his legs.
His knees buckled, his vision blurring—and then a hand caught his waist, strong, steady, familiar.
"Whoa. Easy there," Liss’s voice crackled, wry and warm, like lightning wrapped in velvet.
She stood beside him, her athletic frame outlined in a loose grey t-shirt that hugged her curves, black shorts clinging to her toned thighs, the fabric teasing the edges of her strength.
Her blonde hair was tied in a messy ponytail, strands swaying, catching the dim light of the staircase, her blue eyes scanning him with a mix of concern and amusement.
"You look like hell, Kael," she said, cocking an eyebrow. "Did you sleep at all?"
Kael shook his head once, his dark eyes meeting hers, too tired to hide the weight. "Not really."
Liss narrowed her eyes, her lips pursing. "Thought so."
Before he could protest, she bent her knees, hooked an arm under his legs and another behind his back, and lifted him effortlessly, her strength a quiet promise.
"Hey—hey, I can walk! Put me down!" Kael flailed, his voice half-hearted, his hands gripping her shoulders, feeling the heat of her body through the thin t-shirt.
"You almost ate the floor," she shot back, carrying him up the stairs, her ponytail bouncing, her thighs flexing with each step, a subtle power in her stride.
"Not risking you breaking your nose on my watch. Too many people need that pretty face intact, and you reek of stress."
"I’m fine," he muttered, his cheeks flushing faintly, his hands still on her shoulders, her warmth grounding him. "Just need—"
"A nap," she cut in, her voice flat, unyielding. "You need a fucking nap."
She pushed open her bedroom door with her shoulder, the room a sanctuary of soft greys and muted lights, her bed a wide expanse of plush comfort.
She deposited Kael onto the mattress, the sheets cool against his back, and before he could sit up, Liss bounced onto the bed with a playful thud, draping her arm and leg over him like a human blanket, pinning him down.
Her body was warm, her thigh pressed against his, her breasts brushing his chest through her t-shirt, a fleeting, intimate contact that sent a spark through him.
"Liss," he said, his voice low, half-protesting, his hands twitching but not pushing her away.
"Shh. It’s fine," she murmured, her breath warm against his neck, carrying the faint scent of citrus and ozone, her ponytail tickling his jaw.
"I’m bothering you," he said, his voice softer, his body sinking into the mattress despite his resistance.
"Yes," she said instantly, her tone teasing but firm, her blue eyes glinting as she propped herself on one elbow, looking down at him.
"Incredibly. You’re exhausting, Kael. So do us both a favor and shut the fuck up for once."
